Personally, I think the key to winning is just staying calm, confident, and focused, as opposed to letting yourself get too emotional. (Easier said than done, though.) Even when I'm in Training mode in AH, I can execute combos a lot better if I just stay calm and positive, rather than feeling angry each time I make a mistake.
As for the whole "slowing time" thing, I think he's simply referring to plain old focus. Meaning he wasn't as focused in his games against Nuki and Tokido compared to his earlier games.
