Apex 2015 is right around the corner! Held from 1/31-2/1 at the Clarion Hotel in Secaucus, NJ Garden State Convention Center in Somerset, NJ, the tournament boasts the largest number of Melee pre-registrants of all time at a whopping 1038.
* The venue was changed after the fire marshal, after responding to a fire alarm, saw a collapsed parking deck near the hotel and kicked everyone out. Though the tournament was originally going to be cancelled, http://twitch.tv stepped in and secured a new venue! (Here's a PapaPaint video about it.)
Edit: anyway, is it me, or is there very, very little time allotted to bracket play? Two hours for what I'm under the impression os a bracket of 48 is... not a whole lot of time. I don't like the idea of having to switch between three different streams and possibly missing matches I want to watch. I realize that the upper brackets would be streamed the next day during the "finals" slot, but I'm assuming they'll be streaming every single series of possibly the top ten or so players, and likely going over-time at that.
I mean, coming from an internet-era seat of privilege, of course. Who wants to wait for VODs amirite?
where'd you get the "two hours for 48 players" thing? I'm pretty sure "Round 2" is top 48 - top 8, and it's 4 hours (and not all streamed)
edit:
huh, I guess you're right
well, they definitely won't stream all of top 48 either way, and if there are 24 stations 2 hours for bo3s is plenty of time (I think? there would be 6 rounds?
(WRx means x players left in winners; LRx means x players left in tournament)
16 people should make bracket in winners, 16 in losers, + 16 seeds

I'm in pool F8. Third seed after Fuzzyness and PC Chris, although I'm hoping to pull the upset against a rusty PC. Darkhorse IMO DoH and ROFL are the top 2 in your pool but T.Webb is not bad either.

PC looked pretty good today from what I'm hearing. Dropped his set against Ice, but can't really blame him there.

Yeah ROFL is scary I suck against Luigi. Peach matchup isn't good for me either haha
Wait, so are there tickets for apex if I just want to go to spectate? I'm in the area and my schedule has changed so that I can go, but I can't find any information on attendance. I'm not trying to play, just go watch.
wow that's not good, but seriously looking for information on tickets or passes or whatever. I checked the apex website and fb page and other sites and found nothing, however my friend claims that you need tickets and that he heard they were already sold out. Not talking about registering to play
Q. I don't plan on entering any events, can I just spectate?
A. Yes! You absolutely can, we encourage anyone who wants to be at the event to go.
Q. Do I have to pay a fee if I'm just spectating?
A. Yes, prices are $10 each day for Friday, Saturday and $20 for Sunday. You can choose to purchase single day passes or purchase a $30 weekend pass. Parents and relatives accompanying a minor are exempt from paying.
Q. If I want to purchase a spectator pass where do I get one?
A. You can only purchase a spectator pass at the door, the weekend of the event. We always have plenty of passes available. You can purchase your passes on Friday through Sunday, check the schedule for check-in hours.
Those words are from the google cache of the Apex website, not the actual pages of the website. The site is currently down. When it comes back up, you will need to go to http://register.apex-series.com/Site/faqs to make sure that that information hasn't changed and that spectator passes are still available.

Oh cool! It'll be nice to meet other TL people there. Unfortunately we also have Colbol and Plup in our pool now haha. Widl and Velocity are pretty good as well I played them at a tournament in Philly recently and of course aMSa... our pool is tough!
Also Peanuts made a bet Re. Leffen winning BEAST which has resulted in him being forced to play Mewtwo. I wouldn't say we'll present too much of a challenge :D

Some pools are seeded kind of funny. (New England and Tri-State players are seeded very high.)
My thoughts on "interesting pools" where upsets could happen:
A2: This is a death pool: Kuja (Falcon, Sweden), Spood Beest (Young Link, DE), Minty (Samus, NY), Smokey (Fox, NY), Elliot (Peach, FL; Hbox's original training partner), and Mr. Lemon (Doc, MA) are all really good. On the other hand, I think Wobbles and Qerb (G&W, NJ) should advance from this pool no problem. A3: PSI (Luigi, MA) could beat Phish-it (DK; Peach; Ganon, NY) A5: Kage isn't going (see twitter), so it's up in the air. Hopefully Clue (Sheik, MA) can make it out A7: Twitch (Fox, NC), aka PPMD's brother, over Animal (Fox, NY), #1 in Long Island, is possible! Or one of them could beat Android :O PP's brother vs Armada's brother in one pool is lulz,
B1: Drephen (Sheik, OH) over Vish (Falcon, WA) isn't impossible. B2: UltimaScout and Rula are really good, but... PP + HMW? ouch. B4: Taki (Fox, PA) over Tian (Sheik, CT). Sorry Tian B6: Mittens, aka FalseFalco from CA, is really good. He could beat one of Porkchops (Falco, FL) or CIZ (Marth, NJ); I could conceivably see them making it out in any order. B8: One of Thelake (Zelda, PA), tm (Ganon, OH) or JKJ (Falco, NY) can beat Merck (Fox/Falco, DE). B9: Upke (Zelda, NC) over ROFL (Luigi, CA)???? One can hope. B10: Hot_Bid... gl. I think I'd take Kou (Falco, Japan) over T.Webb (Fox, NY) though. B11: Abadango, who's mainly a Brawl pro, might not make it out here. I hope Knut (Samus, NY), who's probably the 6th best USA Samus, can make it out here. B13: MattDotZeb (Falco, MA) over Mouf (DK/Peach/Falco, TX)n B14: Velocity (Doc, PA) or Kaeon (Fox, NC) have a good chance to upset the top seeds Loki (Ganon, Japan) and Zofrea (Sheik, NJ) B16: Another death pool. Dudutsai (Jigglypuff, MA) has taken out some big names at EVO and MLG, so he could definitely make it out over Dekar (Marth, Australia) and Peki (Fox, Finland). Sweet (Sheik, OH), Captain Smuckers (Falco/Falcon, NY) and Imyt (Doc, CA) are no slouches either.
C5: Assuming Melee Hell | Kokiri = Laijin (Young Link, MD),... ok no upsets. C6: Green Ranger (DK, NY; why does it say CA?) has a good chance of upsetting Juggleguy (Falcon, MI) or Stricnyn3 (Falco, NJ). C9: Fiya (Fox, NY) or BluEG (Luigi, FL) could give Bones (Falco, MD) and even Toph (Fox, CA) runs for their money. C10: $mike (Falcon, NC) vs Arc (Marth, TX) will be close. I hope it's streamed C12: NamiNami (Falco, Finland) was wrecking Leffen in friendlies on stream before BEAST V... so he could take out PGH Carroll (Fox, PA). Also, watch out for Cheezpuff (Puff, NY). C14: Codi (Fox, NY) vs uuaa (Fox, FL) should be close. C15: Sora (Marth, MA) vs Vist (Luigi, MD) and TL's own Zoler (Fox, Sweden) could be very interesting.
D3: gaR (Sheik, CA) vs Beach (Sheik, MI) should be interesting, though I think gaR's Sheik ditto skill should win out. D5: HDL (CT) and Kizz-kun (Brazil) are both really good Marths, but Citizen Snips (Falcon, NY) and TL's BrTarolg (Sheik, UK) may be able to make some waves.
E5: andrewajt62 (ICs, NY) over AbsoluteBlack (ICs/Marth, TX).
Pools where the 2 and below seeds are weak: A1: I guess it's Mango's pool, so that makes sense. I guess Eval (Peach, Puerto Rico) and Vortex (Marth, NY) are ok. B15: MikeHaggar (Falcon, Sweden) vs Sol (Fox, NY) should be close, but they're not as good as some of the other 2 seeds. B16: I dunno if Dekar deserves a 1 seed or if Peki deserves a 2 seed, tbh. C5: Laijin is cool and all, but he's a weaker 2 seed. C16: Chain-ace (Falco, NJ), Nightmare (?, CA), and DOOM (Peach, CT)? They're good, but weaker than other pools. D2: Fullmetal (Marth, GA), Machiavelli (Fox, PA), and Wind (Fox, MA)? Eh. E2: Dunno how good Barbado (Falco?, NY) is, but Tichinde (Marth, RI) is more notable for bringing 10 setups to New England tournaments than for how good he is :^) This seems like a really easy pool for S2J. E3: DekuNut (Falco, NJ) is good, and probably second best in this pool, but he's a weaker 2 seed. E6: WarriorKnight (Bowser/Fox, NY) is really good, but is he really stronger than all the 2 seeds? Tubes (Falcon, GA) is most famous for getting JV5'd by PPMD a few years ago, and the rest of the pool isn't much better. E7: ArcNatural (Fox, MA) is really oldschool but doesn't deserve a 2 seed. Still, he'll likely make it out 2nd because the rest of the pool isn't very strong either.
F1: Strong Bad (DK, MO) is a 2 seed? Heh. F2: Vex Kasrani (Ganon, PA) is a top Brawl player, but not so well-known in Melee. Kmac and Theftz are both Samus players from NJ who are about my level or a little better (though Theftz also plays other characters), so this pool seems a bit silly.
Sounds like they had a backup plan for losing one ballroom (not one day) that involved cutting some of the events, such as the doubles tourneys, and still fitting everything else in. We'll see if they can adjust; sounds like they're going to do everything they can to make the major events work but it rests on the hotel opening at least one ballroom tomorrow. Would suck to see such a major event totally cancelled. Lots of respect for the damage control they're trying to do, especially after weeks of controversy and trouble in previous years as well. Perseverance.
I really hope that they don't cut doubles of any of the games, but I really don't see how they can run a three day tournament in only two without making some sort of cuts.
And I can only imagine how much of a nightmare handling refunds is going to be for the TOs when they start with that process next week.
Calender entry was updated with many many info, like new scheduling of all games in the tournament, stream links (for the streams we don't have on TL yet), and all brackets.
I haven't seen a "stream schedule" yet, so I'm assuming they're just doing whatever for today. VGBC for Melee, TeamSp00ky for other smash games and maybe pokemon, bifuteki for the FGC, and I think LA_Smash is doing their own thing and is gonna stream the Smash 64 Apex matches.

What a scene, man. I think Chillin did pretty alright, he probably could've put up a better fight if he hadn't missed that kill g2. Unfortunate miss that probably got him a bit slumped. Mango vs Leffen is now suuuuper hype though!
It's just more fun to have Ken and KDJ involved in the scene. KDJ was competing in both Melee and Smash 4 at this wasn't he? Not really his fault if he didn't get on stream.
I mean Leffen is basically #6 in world and some may say even better so it's really not that surprising of a result. Props to Chillin though, he is still very much a relevant player than can occasionally finish in the money even after all of these years.
Anddddd... Mang0 just makes this crazy!
EDIT: Also, I'm not sure how much weight it holds but KDJ had some decent results in Project M before Smash 4 sort of sent it out of the tournament circuit. I still think KDJ has some fight left in him for Melee.

Well shit I don't why that one dude is complaining then.
Lots of KDJ hate in the last two pages, and it might be justified in the grand scheme of things, but please time it better. Are you really going to bash someone right after they qualify for bracket in winners by beating Colbol? I mean damn.

It's more of a product of Ken live in socal and KDJ in mass. There is only so much you can do here unless you want drive to tristate every weekend.
I'm no expert, but in general killing the second Ice climber is a huge advantage, cause then they can't do any chain grab combos. Also, they do half as much damage, since you only get hit by one hammer instead of two.
They said there were 3 strats to beat ice climbers: Focus Popo, Focus Nana then get after Popo, beat on popo, then take free hits on Nana while Popo is in the air. Though it was for a different macthup I think.

Whenever I play smash against some people and I fuck up a waveshine then side b off the edge, they always say some shit like you would have won if it wasn't for that, and I fucking hate it. No, it's not. He had one stock advantage, but all MK2 needs is one grab. And don't they always say "one stock isn't a lead."
Don't forget it was 1 stock to 3 and Leffen almost won that game. Leffen was gonna wreck M2K either way.
Yeah, just like Mk2 got "trashed" in that set lol. Your random Mk2 hate is pretty obvious.
What does me disliking M2K have to do with the fact that Leffen already almost won a match from a 2 stock disadvantage? You were pretending the SD made the set. Then I pointed out that Leffen already nearly won a match from a WAY worse deficit. Your argument makes no sense. I don't like M2K, but your attempts to discredit leffen are just silly. He was clearly the better player throughout the set.

I agree with what you're saying. It's just that in this circumstance I felt like cheapened the victory for Leffen, since Mk2 was the only God he hadn't beaten. If you don't that think that Mk2 could have brought that set back if he didn't sd (not saying he would won, just that he could have) then I don't know.

not sure if you're reading into my comment correctly. top 20 players can make upsets but i dont think they're really all that much closer to cracking top 5 player status like leffen. leffen's slain a lot of gods by now, more so than any other of the top 10 players

Why would you expect Leffen to be a good sport in the salty suite, of all things? The event's basically a series of grudgematches.
In fact, the distinct lack of salt in all the other matches made the whole thing seem kinda off.

The problem is 2 stocks man. I've said this before, but people are not willing to take ANY risks what so ever being on 2 stocks. You can't lose a stock and find a comeback, it's just not going to happen if you're on your last stock.
It also doesn't help that everyone who actually gets streamed plays really, really boring matchups.

It really is. Brawl at least had edgeguards. It was actually faster paced too, I mean we can actually do 3 stock Brawl. I think it was funny how some people said the no ledgehog and great recoveries meant more edgeguarding lmao.

It's the players then. Seriously, I've seen really fast Smash 4 games. I dunno, there's just something about Smash 4 games at tournaments where the players seem completely unwillling to do anything even remotely risky. If you don't take any risks, there's no reward both for you and also the viewers.
JMiller outside of like Luigi vs Sonic (although it's Sonic's fault) usually has pretty damn quick games. His Luigi is insane and he doesn't mind taking risks.

Because the players are playing in tournament and most believe that's the optimal way to play. It didn't change in Brawl's lifetime and I doubt it will in Smash 4... The problem with Smash 4 IS that there is bad risk reward.
I think he wants to stream the last remaining matches on the main stream Which I'm totally fine by, I want to see some red yoshi on the official one, but this wait is killing me
I really liked shroomed patience for the last game, didn't go for the edgeguard, just kept tacking on some percent then up airing him. Was pretty sweet.

It's boring as shit, overly defensive, and having two commentators take 5 minutes every set to suggest people to go buy some shit is frankly insulting.
You guys are making me sad, but it's very true. The other matches were atleast somewhat okay (diddy / sheik) but Rosalina just brings the game to this amazingly stale point within the first couple of seconds. Too defensive. Sad times.
Smash 4 is pretty fun to play but for me it just isn't that great to spectate. It's a shame Project M got pushed to the side, it had some pretty exciting moments. Melee is still the greatest though .
Apex making an interesting statement regarding the fighting game community. Most active players? Probably SF4. Most people who actually give a shit about the game? Definitely melee. People don't need to play melee to love it. Happy to see Smash doing well.

Couldn't that just be due to no official online for melee? (unless i'm really confused about something and there is)

If Shroomed had known the rules of the tournament, he would have won. The match he played against Hbox should have been Bo3, according to the rules handbook.

Everyone agreed to Bo5 both brackets beforehand according to someone on Twitter (prog?)

Really? That's kinda weird since Top 8 Melee is usually Bo5 always.

I have made this mistake before too, but you are not correct. That match was not loser's quarters.
The point is moot, since Tafo tweeted that the players/TOs agreed to play Bo5 beforehand.

"Despite being considered one of the best professional smashers in Melee, Leffen has led a controversial career as a smasher, stemming from his reportedly rude conduct during and outside of tournaments. Several players, including lower-leveled smashers new to the scene (who were usually the victims of his bullying), accused him of:
- deliberately sandbagging in tournaments by playing low tier characters against less-experienced players, insulting and berating their skill throughout and after the match.
- spreading exaggerated rumors about other players.
- making rude and acerbic comments on friendly discussions in SmashBoards and deliberately starting arguments with users.
- further blaming other people when confronted about his actions, using his status as a top professional player to decrease his punishments.
This behavior became noticed by Swedish tournament organizers and Melee professionals, both of whom gave him repeated warnings concerning his behavior; in August 2012, he was eventually threatened with a ban from tournaments if he did not improve his attitude. Leffen did not take the claim seriously, claiming that it was "bullshit" that "would never go through in a million years." On February 9th, 2013, after a lengthy online discussion about his poor behavior within the Melee community, Leffen was nationally banned from Swedish tournaments, and was later internationally banned in Finland. Several members of the community compiled many pieces of evidence concerning his behavior into a downloadable archive. They also stated that the only way Leffen's ban would be lifted was for him to create a lengthy apology stating everything he has done wrong in the past and how he would change his behavior in the future."
wow, I haven't been posting in this thread at all, oops
Leffen and PP playing really strong control styles: waiting for opponents to throw out a move and punishing that, while staying close enough that the opponent feels threatened and can't start to play their own style
it's genius, and maybe this is the future of melee
Mango made some weird decisions with his combos and techchases. Like he go the high percent knockdown on the top platform but instead of downsmashing to setup edeguard he continued to chase with dair-shine.

Hmmm, I think Armada is the original in terms of calling Leffen out, and he just beat him off-racing as Leffen's main in a ditto. I think that kinda says it all. On that note, where the fuck did the Armada Fox come from? That was a clinic.

I don't know if it counts as off-racing anymore, he played it in the last couple of sets at the last major. I think he's transitioning.

Well, M2K discovered port priority, especially the first port. If two characters jumped on the ledge at the same time, first port will always get the ledge, but the timing is very strict.
Great tournament, despite the snafu on day 1; Apex staff / TOs really stepped it up, and lots of volunteer TOs helped out too, making the three day -> two day transition a reality
I'm really happy about the results: NC won (PP), Norcal did really well (Shroomed 7th, PewPewU 9th, SFAT 9th), New England did decently (Slox 25th, th0rn/KDJ/Swift 33rd)
Only sadness is that Samus got bopped (Plup 49th, Duck 33rd with a seed, HugS 25th with a seed)
I missed most of doubles, which sucks; I'll have to watch that later! And I want to watch TMG later (UMB got close, but no cigar :/)

Was pulling for Leffen to win it all but as a Marth main god damn if that grand finals wasn't satisfying anyway. PP "I feel like a huge underdog going into this tournament" MD haha
I just got home a few hours ago, funass event but man fuck the weather. I got annihilated by snowstorms both on the way there and on the way back. I can't say I'm thrilled with my performance, went 3-2 in pools, lost to porkchops and mittens (apparently some west canadian secret boss? he beat porkchops and got first in the pool lol). Still had a good time and enjoyed playing doubles and 64. Apex and all the supporting staff/TO's really clutched it out after the giant fiasco on friday. I don't think Idra really comes anywhere close to Leffen. Naniwa doesn't even come close to Leffen. Leffen was banned from playing for a year basically solely from being a massive douche.
When he was a young teenager he went through a really bad keyboard warrior bullying phase. He got banned, did his time, and now hes a better person
But really whenever i've hung out with him hes just a nice, normal person lol. Kind of like most people in the smash community. Hes definitely done some very bad things in the past though. I'm glad hes not like that anymore
I watch Leffens stream a lot these days and he seems pretty normal there tbh. Sure he is cocky as fuck and likes to trashtalk a bit, but that's not the same as being an asshole at all... So yeah i hope he finds a team soon, he is just way too good to be teamless Oo
I dunno how old he is now or what he's been up to, I just know he was banned in part for picking low tier characters against noobies in minor tournaments and basically calling them shit while he beat them. Maybe he had something going on mentally or whatever. I guess anyone can change. Just seems like a really shitty thing to do and super unhealthy for the community. : [

that's just ridiculous to say he's not S tier, unless you think the only S tier players are armada and PP, PP did an interview with EG and it says the players he feared the most coming into the event were leffen armada and mango
I feel like Leffen would be the most valuable smash player possible for a team. He seems like someone who would completely buy into the sponsor and fan relations aspect of any team who picked him up and treated him well.

I do believe so as well.
Though, some things he writes or says aren't exactly likeable. If I recall correctly, after Beast V he said PPMD can be beaten by any top 20 player. At the same time, what he said about Chillin in the same interview, I totally agreed with.
I think the tiers (based on some admittedly-biased combination of results/skill) are as such, with plenty of ?s indicating they could be lower, and probably missing lots of players because I forgot them, oops: SS: Mango, PP, Armada S: Leffen, Hbox, M2k A++: Hax, Westballz, Plup (these 3 are despite their unfortunate performances, or lack thereof, at Apex...), Axe, Lucky, aMSa A+: Shroomed, PewPewU, SFAT, Fly, S2J, Fiction, Wobbles, Nintendude, KirbyKaze, Ice, Flash?, Colbol, Silent Wolf, Javi?, Zhu A: MacD, HugS, Eddy Mexico, Larry Lurr, Chillin?, Duck, Kalamazhu?, Kels, The Moon, Amsah?, [Lovage if he still went to anything] A-: Ken?, Okami, Lil Fumi, Lord, Laudandus?, Tai?, Weon-X?, Kage, Vwins??, Slox, Zoso?, KDJ, th0rn, Cactuar, Chu, Bladewise, VanZ?, Wizzrobe, Porkchops?, Blea Gelo?, Abate, DJ Nintendo, G$?, Swedish Delight, Zanguzen?, Mojo?, Tirno?, Arc?, [Zero? but he doesn't play Melee anymore], Overtriforce?

I agree with this very much. Leffen's ego is massive, but he backs it up with skill, and he wants recognition for it. He has the sort of personality where he doesn't feel the need to respect people he deems unworthy or who doubt him, but is genuinely happy to interact with those who respect his skill and accomplishments.
If a sponsor is willing to stand behind Leffen, the Leffen will reciprocate 110%.
That's just the way I see it anyways, obviously hard to say for sure how a person thinks just by observing him over the internet and social media
Would it be awkward to have Liquid'Leffen and Liquid'Chillin xD

Nah, the salty suite match actually was to determine who is worthy to be on TL :D

If only Lil Fumi were more active. I think Lil Fumi is the only truly "up-and-coming" player in America. Except Wizzrobe?

I think these players (from scenes that I know/pretend to know about) have the potential to improve massively, or at least show how skilled they are, in the near future, even if they may have been around a while: Socal: Lil Fumi, RockLeeland. Mikehaze, Reason Norcal: Laudandus, Delphiki Florida: Wizzrobe, Porkchops, Gahtzu, Gravy New England: Slox, Zoso, Squible. Also Lord HDL is reaaally good and doesn't play Link anymore. NC: twitch and $mike

I would change that SS to include Leffen. He did place over Mango in the 2 last tournaments.
HB and M2K are not on the level of the other Gods right now. But Leffen can beat any of them, and he did it pretty recently.

Discussing anything beyond the top 5-20 players is kind of meaningless since there are SOOOO many players at that point on a crazy level of skill
Not to mention the amount of "hidden bosses" in each region, with varying levels of friendly vs tournament skill etc.etc.etc.
Also it's notoriously difficult to judge skill without actually physically playing someone (results just isn't enough)
Like for example to put cactuar in the same kind of tier as laudandus wouldn't really be right, but im pretty sure laudandus could take games/sets off a ton of the "A-" players you've mentioned (id like to think i would be able to go at least 3-1 with a lot of those players in a bo5 also), but he wouldn't necessarily be better than them
I dunno you just have to play people for real to find out how good they actually are haha
