Does anyone know of any games from the last 4 years, aside from the ones I've mentioned, that could credibly make it on a best games ever list? I think we can safely ignore PC Gamer's list. Bioshock Infinite, Dark Souls. While I personally found Metro Last Light to be one of the best story driven stealth/fps out there, I could understand why a lot of people wouldn't praise it as much as I did. It's pretty niche I guess. But definitely Bioshock Infinite and Dark Souls. Bioshock Infinite is an unfinished, poorly designed game with a mildly interesting story which doesn't stand up to any kind of scrutiny. Its set pieces sucked all their design focus away, take them out and you're left with a terrible FPS with conflicting mechanics. Seriously whoever had the bright idea of having you run around looting corpses for health packs mid fight in a game with hit scan weapons and a tiny almost non-existent regen shield does not deserve to be working on AAA games. Dark Souls is great but I hear the PC port was terrible?
Scathing.
Your points regarding the game's mechanics are reasonably accurate, however I disagree that the story was "mildly interesting". It was certainly better than the vast majority of triple A releases of the last few years in that regard, and the game's interesting graphic design and aesthetic only further enhanced that.

How is Starcraft 2 over brood war? This list is pure bullshit
|
It could be worse I suppose. Tbh apart from maybe Starcraft, TF2 and the aggregate TES series, I probably have clocked more time on Minesweeper than any other game in that list.
I just think it is moronic to compile a "top games" list. I don't see how you can compare Call of Duty to Minecraft or Bioshock to Starcraft.
Even if I'm taking the view "which do I enjoy the most" - well it varies on what mood I'm in, how awake I am/ how much energy I have, how much of the game I have played, etc. I have no idea what Plants vs. Zombies is doing on that list (why not something like KotOR?). At least they put Morrowind ahead of it...

This list is quite ridiculuos. HL2 and Skyrim shouldn't be placed that high.

arma 2 and minecraft over world of warcraft, haha oh wow

At least they put Morrowind ahead of it... The thing is, every such list is subject to heavy genre bias, particularly among niche communities like TL.
TL is ultra-critical when judging competitive RTS games, but when it comes to other genres, they don't match that elitism and unforgiving assessment, which is seen in other communities for their respective genres. Just as TL readers might consider many recent RTS games such as the newer CnC games as casual fare, hardcore CRPG communities don't look all that fondly against a lot of the mainstream RPGs that a lot of people here put in their top 10 (DAO, ME, FO3, Skyrim, etc. would go a lot lower than people in this thread have placed them).
It's simply not possible to have a writer who is both unbiased to all genres and plays all genres a fair amount, while also being familiar enough with each genre to make suitably intelligent and critical assessments of what the "greats" within that genre are.

LOL
the top should include:
TES:morrowind WoW (classic-the burning crusade) age of empires 2 counter-strike 1.5/1.6 (including the attached half-life game) quake3 diablo2-LOD warcraft 3:TFT starcraft:BW unreal tournament 99 knights of the old republic
would also add: dark souls (technically not a pc game and the pc-port was awful but after some fast fixes and played with gamepad a quality game to enjoy!)

Their list has D3 but not D2 on it, therefore it is invalid.

Well, that's funny. I'm not a professional reviewer by any stretch, yet I can easily see that the list is bullshit in several different genres:
RPGs: Placing Skyrim at #1 makes me feel like a 10-year-old has assembled this list.
FPS: It's an all-time list, so how could Team Fortress 2 possibly be ranked ahead of Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, Counter Strike, etc.?
RTS: How can SC2 be ranked ahead of BW?
TBS: Civilization 5 is at #20 in the list. Civilization 4 is the better game. Fans of Civilization are almost unanimous on this point.
Puzzle: Portal is at #14. Fair enough, it was good, but where is Braid? Where is Lemmings? What about Amnesia: Dark Descent if you want plot-driven puzzle-based games that last for a few hours?
|
Why do you need a list of games anyway, unless you're looking for other "good" games to play. Your favorite games are most likely different from mine...
Game reviews are known to be biased and funded in part by gaming studios, so it comes as no surprise that the proposed list does'nt correspond to everyone's expectations. Everyone else could come up with a different list and generate just as much bickering.

Well as so many "xxx of all time"-lists, this is subject to heavy Recentism.

I don't care about their list. My point is mainly to criticize those who are wasting their time trying to come up with their own "alternative" list because those will be equally flawed for the reasons I stated.

If it's story, writing quality, character development, the traditional facets of an RPG, then NV has FO3 beat. If it's encounter design/combat mechanics, the traditional facets of a shooter hybrid, then NV also has FO3 beat. If it's the exploration component that is the traditional selling point of a Bethesda game, then neither are better than Morrowind or Skyrim at this anyway.
I'd be hard pressed to put either in a top 100 list though, because there are better RPGs, better shooter hybrids, and better Bethesda games.

Definitely agreed on that. Both are great though.

If Fallout NV had been made by a random group of people, it would have been called a mod.
It shouldn't get credit as its own game. Despite being a standalone release, it has been built entirely on top of Fallout 3 with minor Gamebryo facelift. It's the same engine, same concept, same setting, and mostly the same mechanics.
Fallout 3 should thus get credit for both the original game and New Vegas.
