At least it wasn't Mass Effect 3. Mass Effect 2 was actually quite enjoyable.
I honestly would have had Minecraft at the top of the list. There's just so much that can be done with that game.

I always thought Minecraft was more heavily modded. I mean it's written in Java and the graphics are so simple, just about anyone can mod it with some practice.

This list however, is trash. It's definitely not as strong as the original, I mean the combat is pretty trash. It succeeds in every other aspect though. It's overrated in that it's not a 10 but a 9, on a scale from 1 to 10.
For a 2004 release, the thing had some of the best ideas of it's time. A physic engine like the one in HL² was revolution at the time.

Half Life 2? Just for the record I´m not talking about Oppossing Force. Half Life + OF were milestones in gaming history, but Half Life 2 wasn´t more than an ordinary FPS. Well after all it´s just my opinion.

this is the worst list i've ever seen. gaming magazines are so stupid now -.-
diablo 3 is on there and diablo 2 isnt even listed lol what a joke.

Normally these threads are full of exaggerations, because people are offended that two relatively close items were organized in a way they disagreed with. But this thread is not full of exaggerations.
I don't even understand the list. I can possibly see an argument for Skyrim, due to its mods and the ambiguity of the term 'Greatest' (ie Skyrim is not the best game, but you can do more awesome things with it than any other modern game), and maaaaybe some people prefer Fallout 3 to NV (again, maybe the 'Greatness' thing comes into play since it revived the franchise). But some of these are just nonsensical.
ARMA 2 is #13 and DayZ is #45? Combined I don't think they're even in the top 100, and certainly not separate. The best advice is to just not visit PC Gamer to call them idiots, because that's probably what they're going for. It's the Gawker technique to journalism - say a bunch of moronic crap -> get hits.

This list is pretty bad. Thank god WarZ wasn't on there, but why is Diablo 3 on there instead of Diablo 2. Plus is Arma 2 so high up there.
|
I agree that the list was pretty bad.
For me, The Last of Us was one of the best games I've ever played. I'm not sure if it would be "the" greatest, but I'm sure I'd consider it for one of the contenders. It's a solid experience of an amazing story/presentation coupled with fun but simple gameplay.
Red Dead Redemption is one of those titles that I feel lucky to experience. It was such a great game.
Sanitarium is a game I won't ever forget for the rest of my life. It is kind of like a bundle of emotions, fright, regret, terror, curiosity and sadness.
Far Cry 3 was probably the best single player FPS I've ever played since Half Life 2.
Assassin's Creed 2 was also really good, because of how much it improved on the original. There was also something magical about being a young assassin bent on revenge, walking down in streets of Venice and Florence, all the while discovering the hidden tombs and deciphering the messages inside.
Diablo 2: LOD is probably the greatest hack and slash of all time. Diablo 3 is a good game, but it can't get close to its big brother.
WoW before WOTLK (excluding Ulduar) was such a unique and amazing MMO experience. Too bad they had to dumb down the game entirely to keep growing sub numbers. (which they can't keep anymore)
For Turn based strategy games, my all time favourite is Master of Orion 2. I played that game for so long, I love it so much. Civ series is also a long time favourite of mine.
Mass Effect 2 and Witcher 2 are also my favourites. Both are pretty solid games.

Why the fuck is STALKER: CoP on there and not SoC? Why CS: GO instead of 1.6? Why SC2 instead of BW? Why Sim City 4 instead of 2000? Skyrim is not the best game ever made. DayZ is not technically a game. Eve online is not better than WoW. Holy shit, TF2 is not the fucking best multiplayer FPS ever made. This list sucks so much...
Though it's good to see SC2 so high, I can actually sort of agree with where it's placed overall.
|
Sounds pretty FPS-biased.
|
No Hidden & Dangerous? SC2 above BW?
This list is nothing but a big joke.

It's just a list of those companies that paid more to be higher on the list.
To be honest, it's also about relativity, are they talking about # of copies sold? $ made? % of population played? If you think of it, why would they want to put old titles in there when gaming companies can get more revenue by the magazines posting up newer titles. They simply slipped in a few classics far down the list just to keep some readers content that the game made it to top 100.
I'm really surprised that WC3 is not even there whilst dota 2 is.
If this was based off the most played game during the longest period of time, Half Life 1 would easily take the cake.

Half life 2 was the first game with a IK physics system. This allows characters to grab objects and such, so that was a big deal. Not sure if it warrants a top 10 though.

I'm not gonna hammer on Skyrim, but it being No.1 is a joke.

What a mighty shit list. None of those games deserve anything close to top 10.
