To be honest, it's also about relativity, are they talking about # of copies sold? $ made? % of population played? If you think of it, why would they want to put old titles in there when gaming companies can get more revenue by the magazines posting up newer titles. They simply slipped in a few classics far down the list just to keep some readers content that the game made it to top 100.
I'm really surprised that WC3 is not even there whilst dota 2 is.
If this was based off the most played game during the longest period of time, Half Life 1 would easily take the cake. WoW, cs, war3 (including dota), and soon LoL.

I look at lists like this and figure they're going for the "modern games are more important/played now" approach. Starcraft 1 is the greatest game of all time (I don't say this specifically because of BW's pro scene, though that just adds to its greatness). Deus Ex is top 5 material, so they got that right.
My personal favorites after that that should belong near the top 10: Starcraft 2, Mass Effect 2 (except ME3's ending makes replaying any of the series feel pointless). Half-Life 1, perhaps, except both games give me headaches. I can't really argue with Skyrim, Minecraft, WoW, being near the top. Doom should be higher up as well.
DAO at #24. That's one that feels about right, maybe I'd scoot it up to 20. DX:HR, while I like it a lot, seems a bit high.
These lists seem more whack every year. I remember the good old days when they'd put Doom at #1 (though it belongs after SC1).
Edit: If they're going for the modern games approach, Witcher 2 should be higher on their list. I'd also put it top 20.

Assassins Creed 2, which was a good game...but a mediocre PC Port job.
Not going to nitpick the entire list, but those three really stood out. Plus a noticeable lack of many older classics like StarControl 2.
Fallout 3 was better than Nv, and fallout 1 was better than both, so..
Also skyrim being first and oblivion 73º, with morrowind at the bottom, rite.
One could say the entire list is bullshit but again, that is the writer personal opinion, but yeah, the fact that he listed Diablo 3 and not Diablo 2 just speak for itself.

Skyrim might not even deserve top 100, atleast not if you don't count mods. Hilarious list. Must be either nerd-baiting or complete and utter ignorance.
|
Just don't give PCGamer any attention or visit their site just to post about this list. It's a crock of shit designed to reel in people offended at this blatant rubbish.
Must be suffering to meet their monthly sales or something, because this is just laughably bad trolling.

Starcraft 2 over Brood War and Diablo 3 over Diablo 2? Lol?

Horrible, horrible horrible. I'm okay with Deus Ex. But Skyrim as #1? I'm just shocked.
Well really I think this just reiterates the fact that no one should care about what other people's lists are. its all subjective, and to many it will appear to be complete nonsense. If I recall correctly I was so bored playing Skyrim that I had to stop part way through and pick it up later. Their games have no substance...all the quests are boring 'laundry list' quests that numb your brain. Also as usual the dialogue options were poor. Its a sad joke that Skyrim is even considered an RPG. How low our standards have fallen, or maybe they're just PC Gamer's standards.

I rate games on spectate value. XCOM should be near last. TF2 has goofy ass graphics. Minecraft being the best sandbox game deserves it rating but I still hate the game. The other top 10 I don't mind that they are higher than SC2 1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim 2. Mass Effect 2 3. Half-Life 2 4. Deus Ex 5. Bioshock 6. Left 4 Dead 2 7. Minecraft sand box game for babies. 8. Starcraft II 9. Team Fortress 2 Call of Duty for people with no money 10. XCOM: Enemy Unknown Dumb game takes no skill.

No minesweeper, you kidding me right now?

1. Tetris 2. Minesweeper 3. PacMan 4. Super Mario Bros. 5. Dune 2 6. Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne 8. Quake 7. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 9. C&C: Red Alert 10. Unreal Tournament 2004 11. Diablo 12. StarCraft: Brood War 13. Planescape: Torment 14. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind 15. System Shock 16. Portal 17. Bomberman 18. Scorched Earth 19. Colin MacRae Rally 2.0 20. Heroes of Might & Magic III 21. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory 22. Journey 23. WipeOut HD 24. Virtua Fighter V 25. Flower
Top 25 games I keep playing and returning to (order is a bit random, I can't rate one over the other). Must be the best games ever (I even included some modern console games so it's not just nostalgia).

DotA 2, League of Legends and Fallout: New Vegas seem to be definitely up there as some of the best games ever made. Apart from those, I'm not sure there's anything from the last 4 years that would make it on a best games ever list. At least there's none that I can think of. I wouldn't include Mass Effect 2 because it's more like a movie than a game. Maybe Dragon Age: Origins. Possibly Dark Souls, although the difficulty of that game prevents most people from getting much out of it (and I have to admit I haven't yet finished it).
Does anyone know of any games from the last 4 years, aside from the ones I've mentioned, that could credibly make it on a best games ever list? I think we can safely ignore PC Gamer's list.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown 7. Bioshock 8. Minecraft 9. Left 4 Dead 2 10. Starcraft II
Very few "Top X best Y" lists can be trusted. 99% of them, including this one, are simply popularity contests. As great as Skyrim is, it's not as good as Morrowind, LFD2 isn't as good as the first, ME2/XCOM/Minecraft definitely shouldn't be in the top ten, and there are a whole host of other problems. Anyone who actually knows their gaming history should not be a fan of this list.

Bioshock Infinite, Dark Souls. While I personally found Metro Last Light to be one of the best story driven stealth/fps out there, I could understand why a lot of people wouldn't praise it as much as I did. It's pretty niche I guess. But definitely Bioshock Infinite and Dark Souls.

Dark Souls, yes: definitely a great game. Up there with Castlevania: Symphony of Night (and Wonderboy in Monster World, although maybe I'm being too nostalgic) as one of the best open world action RPGs ever made.
Bioshock Infinite was fun, but I get the feeling that like Mass Effect 2 the gameplay is added on to the cut-scenes rather than the cut scenes being added on to the gameplay. It feels like a movie would have been more appropriate.

Symphony of the Night should definitely be on anyone's best of x video game list somewhere. I kind of see where you're coming from with Bioshock Infinite playing out like a movie, but I don't really mind that so much. Still, it's not exactly adventure game level story > gameplay, and some of my favorite moments in the game were from zipping along railways while stuff was blowing up all over the place.

Dunno either. It's the same thing just upgraded in every single way.

Bioshock Infinite is an unfinished, poorly designed game with a mildly interesting story which doesn't stand up to any kind of scrutiny. Its set pieces sucked all their design focus away, take them out and you're left with a terrible FPS with conflicting mechanics. Seriously whoever had the bright idea of having you run around looting corpses for health packs mid fight in a game with hit scan weapons and a tiny almost non-existent regen shield does not deserve to be working on AAA games.
Dark Souls is great but I hear the PC port was terrible?

About Bioshock Infinite. Wat
About Dark Souls. Yes the port was awful but a modder had fixed all the issues within a few hours of launch.
