How many of you are interested in starting a TL Fantasy basketball league? If we have enough people I can set one up (on yahoo).
If you're interested, just post in here and i'll get a list going and hopefully start a league some time this week. I think we'll cap the league at 16 teams (if we even get that many people interested).

I would normally participate, but I'm in five leagues already and want to keep it there as I was reluctant to be in the fifth as is. Plus, the season has already started, and it takes time to find a draft time that works for everyone. Thanks, but maybe next year.

By the way is there an overview of how drafting works? I'm guessing it's like the real deal, so you'll have to watch your salary cap to not end up with a non-existent bench etc?

When the draft starts (Thurs, Dec 29th @ 2 pm est) we will each be taking turns choosing players. Starting order will be determined randomly. It's a snake draft system (whoever is last in one round is first in the next).
So basically everyone will build a team.
Each week you will be in a head to head match against another team. Your players stats will be added throughout the week and go towards your team stats (pts, assts, rebs etc.). For each category you win you get a point.
So you want to build a balanced team that does well in all categories. What you don't want is melo/amare/kobe/a bunch of other guys that score a ton of points but don't help your team anywhere else.
Of course there are different strategies as well. Some teams will choose to "punt" a category by conceding it to focus on other things. A common example is, teams that draft dwight howard tend to punt points and focus their efforts on everything else (because you don't need to win every single category to beat a team).

Then how do we get different people in different statistics if it's just once? or does that mean each team gets like more than 15 players? I guess what I'm really asking is what if I chose a bunch of shitty players, am I stuck with them? or do I get to move these shitty players around in different positions to see if they get more of those stats?

You will draft the 14 or 15 original players and then have 4 adds per week. So you can change up to 4 guys on your team and you won't be playing all your guys every time as some guys will be on the bench. Pretty much try to draft smart and then plug up holes as the weeks go on with players you might need.

theres the tab for DRAFT CENTRAL
and then look for the part "Pre-Draft Player Rankings"
if you are unable to attend the draft, the system autopicks based on yahoo's rankings,
OR
you set your own ranking through the "Pre-Draft Player Rankings" and it should pick from there

I have only played fantasy football, and soccer but that sucks, so I have a few questions.
A new weekly matchup begins every Monday and consists of a set number of games based on your league's statistical categories. Each stat category counts as one game, with the win going to the team that finishes the week with the highest total in that category (the cumulative total after each Sunday's games).
So, if in a given week, your team scores more field goals than your opponent's, you would be credited with a victory. However, if your opponent's team ended the week with a better field goal percentage than your team, you'd be charged with a loss. If the two teams end up tied in a given category, each receives credit for a tied game.
How many category's are there? Field Goal, FG%, Rebounds, steels, points, 3 points?
And how many players do I play each week? Do I start 5 players (pg, sg, pf, sf, c) or are there more? And can I start 4 pointguards and zero c's?

that's right. the G/F (guard/forward) positions can be filled by any player that is a guard (point guard, shooting guard), and forward (small forward/power forward). any position can be put into UTIL slots. bench slots do not accumulate pts
you change the roster for each day.

Main page Lists ranking and who you're playing each week. The lower the waiver number, the higher priority you get when picking up a player from the waiver wire. The NBA tab lists the games for that day. If you click My team at the top it will take you to....

My Team Your lineup for the day. You can select the day at the top. You want to set your lineup so you're playing all you're active players. It's just a drag and drop. Pretty simple. Remember to update your team! I usually make a habit of setting my lineup a week ahead.

Player List Lists all players available to pickup (add) (lol @ Devin Harris). Click the green + and you can add one player and drop another. You want to do this when you see someone get hot or someone get injured. You're allowed a max of 4 pickups per week. If you drop a player, he goes to the waiver wire and it'll list a W next to his name. If someone wants to pick up a player from the waiver wire, that's when the waiver priority comes in. So you can hedge your bets here. If you see a good player on the waiver wire and want him, you run the risk of losing your waiver priority (it drops to the bottom if you pick someone up from the waiver wire). However, if think no one else is going to pick him up and wait to add the player after he escapes the waiver (I think it's 2 or 3 days), you won't lose your priority.

Matchup Since we're starting next week, I posted my matchup from my other league. (I'm getting owned because my players are underperforming -_-). This is pretty self explanatory. It lists the 9 categories and whoever has the highest value wins the category (except Turnovers). Right now I'm losing 6-3.
Some pro strats: Since this is a daily update league, as the end of the week nears, look at your matchup. It maybe in your best interest to actually bench some players to make sure you win a category. For instance if you are close in TOs and you're far enough ahead in points, assists, and steals, you may want to bench Westbrook because he's TO prone.

I was one pick away from getting thornton (who I wanted badly). But your team autopicked him right before my turn  (
EDIT: I'm looking at your team and I seriously think you autopicked one of the best teams in the league lol. I don't know how you didn't manage to get any really weak mid-draft picks (something that usually happens with autodrafted teams). Quite amazing really lol

lol what do u need help on man? dark made a pretty nice guide in the last page and the rest of the stuff just play with the different tabs on there. You will figure it out, just don't worry about clicking on the wrong shit, it will always ask you to confirm anything

No, you can edit everyday, but you have to do it a day before at least. I suggest setting your whole week the weekend before so you don't forget.

Sure, but while it helps your counting stats, it can also hurt stats like fg%, ft%, and TO if you play bad players

No, scheduling is part of the strategy in fantasy bball. You're going to have more players playing one day than your opponent and vice versa. Later on in the week, rod will probably have more players playing. It depends on the players you drafted.

the stats are cumulative over the week so you might the advantage one day, your opponent might have the advantage the other day.

People are going to be disapproving a lot of Ben Gordon this season. That team needs his offense desperately and there is no one behind him to challenge.
Man I can't challenge you in rebounds this week because humphries is injured. Or challenge in threes because gordons out. I'm hoping to eek out a 5-4 win or so. Last night wasn't great for my team overall (all my rebounders failed).
I think you're in a good position the rest of the week. Most likely you'll take this week 6-3 or 5-4.

Anyways, SAC should get rid of Westphal. Even if a player demands that you shouldn't never be letting the world know. It's clear him and cousins won't work together and SAC has already said they aren't getting rid of cousins.

Thornton and Evans are young. Inconsistency is the only consistent in young players.
This is going to be a rough week for them too. Yesterday started a 3 day/3 game span. Pretty rough NBA schedule this year.
Schedule taking a toll on the players too. Ton of injuries cropping up. ZBO out for 6-8 weeks, manu needs surgery and will be out at least 2 months, no word on EJ yet.

That's because he's on the waiver wire.
Waiver wire is where the dropped players are for a certain time (2 days for our league?), if more than one team claims the same player, the team that's highest on the Waiver Priority List is given the rights to the player. The priority list is initially set based on the reverse of the draft order. However, each time you add a waived player to your roster, you're pushed to the back of the list. This "rolling" list stays in effect for the entire season.
To find your current position in the waiver priority list, please go to the Managers List via your League Overview page.
If nobody claims a player during the waiver period, he becomes a free agent.

If you're rookies, then I suggest adding and dropping players at the same time. To do this, just add the player you want first, and then it'll ask you to drop a player because your roster is full. This way you'll get to keep your previous player till your new player comes off the waiver wire, and you won't have an empty spot on your roster.

There's luck, and there's miracles.. Haha, it's not miracles. Those players were actually not playing up to their potentials earlier this season. Like I said, players are usually going fall to their averages. It's just unfortunate you had to experience them when they are on their upswing.

I'm aware of the fact that they are capable players, and regardless if you're having a breakout season (which I might agree on, as he is the only Piston playing even close to decent), 32&16 is a lot. I'm fully aware of Allen getting steals, and that's not what bothers me the most, it's more of a "icing on the cake" thing. Jax career avg. is 16.3 pts & 3,3ast, him having a 34&8 + 25&6 game shooting close to 62% is not him "playing more like himself", it's a lot more than that. Same goes for Josh Smith, he's not a player you expect to shoot 63%, you expect him to be a solid double-double guy (20-10), not 26 & 30pts, at least not to such a high shooting %. Rudy Gay is the one I'm less surprised by, mainly do to the Grizzlies situation, with Z-Bo out they're gonna need another scorer to step, and when he's off, Gasol will probably pick up his slack.

Hey guys, not in your league but had a quick question. I'm the LM for a casual league (mostly IRL friends) and wanted to ask WHEN should I use my LM veto powers regarding trades? I've read it should only be used for cases of clear collusion or like LBJ for [random newb] type trades, but what if it's more gray area? The rest of the league doesn't really participate much in the voting process, so this trade will likely go through if I don't do anything about it
The trade in question is:
Kyle Lowry, Marcin Gortat, Carlos Boozer for
Anderson Varejao (who just now got picked up off WW), Elton Brand, Gerald Henderson (picked up off WW a week prior)
The guy giving up the first lineup is trying to improve in the STLs cat (h2h) and also has no 2 guard besides Jarrett Jack atm. Thoughts? Thanks!

Yeah I agree with the analysis, but I guess my question is if it's really fair for me to step in when both parties aren't colluding, and the "losing" team wants the trade? I'm pretty new to fant (we all are) so I don't know what the "right" move is.

That's totally up to you. However, there is absolutely no reason for someone to be giving up Lowry for that. That makes it highly suspect. In my other league, we implemented a google spreadsheet where everyone is required to input a yes/no vote on every trade. If they don't vote, then they lose the privilege of accessing the waiver wire for a set amount of time. This encourages participation.
You may want to ask the person who's trading Lowry/Gortat/Boozer what he's thinking because he's losing in almost every cat. If he can't give you a satisfactory answer (it'll be hard to do), then I would block the trade.
