I'm around level 40 and I use Sweep+Life on Hit+leech life (cant get a 4 link to save my life) as my main method of clearing packs. I use heavy strike for single target and molten shield/leap slam+stun for extra survivability. In the passive tree I went to diamond skin to resolute technique and then onto the life nodes near the Scion start.
My plan is to grab lots of leech life and get Unwavering, Iron Reflexes and Vaal Pact last as well as any leech life/life on hit/life nodes that aren't too far away. For skills, I want to get enduring cry and molten shell with cast on damage taken asap and. This is only my second char so I'm sure my build is not that good and my gear is shit, so I haven't even started cruel yet.
Anyone have any tips for me?
Also IGN: AutechreHC add me if you want. Vaal Pact is kinda sketchy as a life based character because life regen is so good. Also, you don't need loh, you need to add damage and aoe to sweep to scale it. Use added fire + hatred and get all the good staff nodes. Going into Templar for the increased aoe is good, skip going for iron reflexes when you probably aren't using Dex gear anyway.

Life leech generally scales better in all the other situations. Vaal pact is rarely considered worth it unless you are doing sufficient amounts of damage all at once to kill yourself on reflect. Otherwise regenerating ~5% of your hp every second is usually much more valuable (plus being able to "EMERGENCY" life potion up). There should be some 4-links in the guild stash. If not, ask around in guild chat lots of people have spare crappy 4links. If you are in domination I certainly do. Either life on hit OR life leech should be enough linked to sweep IMO, add "melee physical damage" instead of 1 and you will clear wayyyyy faster. Afaik you can just use leap slam to clear mobs (forget stun thats awful ) instead of sweep and keep heavy strike for single target. Run a curse (prefer warlords mark if you are having leech issues, again somebody in the guild should be able to give one to you or sell it for cheap aka an alch). If you post a link to your build here somebody could give you tips to optimizing it but really I think you should just press on, clear content, and when you hit a brick wall then thats how you learn.
If there's not a Warlord's Mark in the stash, I have one I can give him, but unfortunately I won't be able to get on PoE until next Tuesday since I'm out fo town this weekend.
If you still need the WM next week, whisper "Alexis_Alshield" and I'll give it to you, but you'll likely either have someone else hook you up, or be able to farm for like 20m and buy one before I get back. =]

Derp. I completely forgot that various link configurations have different probabilities. I was operating under the assumption that they rolled with equal likelihood, which, if true, would make 6L a WHOLE lot less expensive haha.

Sweep is a lot like discharge in that the idea is to oneshot the whole screen. Look a kripparian's new discharger based on life and try to steal his concept of how to stay alive.

Realistically I it would take some testing of both... but they are each like 6 exalts (maybe a bit less for marohi). And that is before you 5 (or 6!) link them.
I mean, marohi reduces your MS whereas kongors gives you onslaught (increased ms/attackspeed etc) so Kongor's is PROBABLY just better considering the skill point it also saves you but Iunno.
Oh shit didn't think about running conc effect in there. With that kind of damage could you stun lock bosses, too? Shit!
And with high physical damage, mana cost isn't an issue as long as you can cast it because of mana leech.
Only thing is I don't really trade a lot so i'm pretty poor. Maybe I'm being too naive thinking I'll be able to get a Marohi from chance orbs. : (

Imo the ONLY similarity between Sweep and Discharge is that they both put you at a lot of danger before the damage is dealt, the only issue is that Sweep does substantially less damage than Discharge.

Maybe if u don't have a 650 topend weapon...
Okay so for 99.9% of the populace... XD

Okay so for 99.9% of the populace... XD Still. Even if I DID have that 800 dps 2H someone posted on the forums the other day, I wouldn't be able to compare my DPS to Discharge with Sweep. AFAIK best 2H skills are double strike/heavy strike for single target and ST for aoe.
|
@blitz: I don't have one either, but they definitely exist and that would make sweep builds... do considerable damage I think. I don't know how it would compare to discharge but I think you should be able to out-scale everything excepting maybe the prolif-burn part.
I'm still poor but I'm busily selling my recently acquired 514-topend sword for multiple exalts. Which I will promptly spend and be poor again
@Varanice: ST can't really compare to sweep for the amount of AoE you can do. I bet sweep can hit for more than you'd think too. Not saying its a good build but you should be able to scale it incredibly well with the right weapon.

I think i have a warlord's mark. You get it pretty early as a marauder in the quests, but thanks i'll let you know. I'll probably be dead next week anyway

Yeah, I would love to run those gems. Kinda have to work with what I've got though
I'll probably save up and get an increased damage support first. I think that would help me the most right now.

You should get melee physical damage as a reward sometime pretty early in cruel I think so if you progress you get that. Its likely your best support (maybe after added fire?).

Cool, I just got a (relatively) sick weapon last night Hrimnor's Hymn or something. Pretty good rolls on it too. I feel safer progressing now, so hopefully I can pick that up soon. I've already got 1 or 2 added fire supports that I got from drops.

welp game crashed when i portaled into a map. is it gone?

Might be. You can try to access your old Arcane Lab instance via Control-Clicking the arcane lab when waypointing to it but no promises.

So I decided I'm going to make my triumphant return. I used to play A LOT, back maybe 6+ months ago, I was mostly a LA Ranger and an EK Witch on hardcore. I'm going to play Nemesis so I'll be poor again, (all my wealth is in hardcore ~_~).
I'm looking around and seeing that Melee is viable now, so I'd like to play some sort of 2H face smasher class. Are there any viable builds for what I'm looking for?

2H Spectral Throw is the FotM so you're in luck. Unless you mean true 2H facesmash in which case you would probably just modify a ST tree a bit. (I can do this for you if you would like.)

Is true 2H melee viable or will I be on a fool's errand? When I played melee was basically suicide. Dual wield ele cleave started to come up and I quit just after the patch came out that made that build viable.
Keep in mind I will be poor, my 30-40 exalts worth of currency, gear, maps, etc., will be rotting in hardcore, but at the same time it might be fun to start fresh again. :D~
I guess my first toon back should be a viable cheap build for which I can begin to accumulate wealth again to build more 'niche' characters. I really, really would like to play true 2H facesmash though if it's possible.
