Part of it has to do with the fact that publishers pressure game developers to release their games as soon as possible, there is so much less fine-tuning and detailed work that goes into games nowadays, because everyone just wants to maximize their profit. Just look at games like Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, huge games and while playing these games you could really feel how much hard work and love was put into these games, today's games however feel unrefined and more like pre-releases than full games. And the fact that most games have post-release patches en masse actually proves that point.
Aaaand I'm rambling again[/QUOTE] Maybe you're just playing the wrong genre. I never played much balburs gate 1-2 (except for ps2 versions). I did play some icewind dale, fallout 1-2, Morrowind and I never stopped to feel how much hard work were put into the game. I just wanted to get rid of the constant dialogues and kill stuff. I agree though, Oblivion was not a good game . Games that you spend all the time reading / exploring is really just boring. You can do that in real life. I thought the point of rpg's was to shoot fireballs at stuff in fantasy worlds.
People praise diablo 1 and 2 to be some of the best games ever, when in reality there was just a bunch of 1-liners, mostly in "demon" voices and then back to killing stuff and ninjalooting again.
edit: quoting is hard

PoE gameplay is fun, but the setting is a snoozefest. Playing PoE just makes me wish Diablo 2 was new again, and everyone was playing. The setting was 10x better, the music was better, and it didn't De-sync. That being said, PoE is still a great game. I just wish the setting wasn't so boring.

Yeah, I agree. Setting and mood was sooo good in d2. PoE still has decent mood and fitting areas but lacks music and setting to great extend.
And yes, casualisation, the death of good series'.. :'(

I repeatedly pointed out that PoE is a great game compared to all that other trash that game developers put out today (with few exceptions).
However, I think that GGG don't have a very good understanding of how game mechanics should work and how to balance a game.
For example, the game developers have said on several occasions that the reason for desync is the relation of server to client with no artificial latency (for example, in SC2, there is a few miliseconds of delay, it's barely noticeable and has no impact on the gameplay, but on a microscopic level - in a sense - SC2 is less responsive to the client than Path of Exile.)
The reason, they argue, this is the case is for players to have 100% control over their character, they want players to be able to dodge attacks and spells 100% of the time, if they are good enough to do that.
But, given that argument, it makes no sense to have boss fights like Dominus in the game, who in his second form is guaranteed to hit and damage you, no matter what you do as a player, or even Merveil with her ice nova is guaranteed to hit you, which makes these bosses nothing but gearcheck bosses in the end, contradicting the previous argument of "we want players to be able to dodge spells and attacks". Vaal on the other hand (with the exception of the rocks), is a brilliantly designed boss, because you can avoid all of his attacks if you are good enough.
It's just self-contradicting, you cannot argue for one thing and then have the complete opposite of that in your game. These are game mechanics that I personally despise, because they remove control from the player and make it a pure gear-check.
Balance-wise (especially in racing) this game is a disaster and the recent cleave nerf demonstrates that GGG have no idea how to balance their own game. They take a skill, which isn't even the most powerful skill in racing, (*cough* leap slam *cough*) that 4 out of 6 classes heavily rely on and nerf it to the ground. The best race class, duelist, is barely affected by it and comparatively even better now, while shadow/ranger/templar all got nerfed to the ground.
This is not how you balance a game, it simply defies logic.
Path of Exile in my opinion is a fluke, it's a great game (by today's standards), but not because GGG are talented developers, they just took an idea that works (ARPG grinding) and lucked out because Blizzard is totally incompetent. On the grand scheme of things, comparing it with D2, it's a terrible game, but compared to D3 and all the other trash that's out there today, it's an amazing game.

Well, an Iron Man mode like in d2 isn't really possible I guess.^^

Got a pretty stupid question, does Cast on Death + Portal Gem work? So I always have a portal when I die? :O
|
I am doing similar build to what Kripp is doing, but not because of him. I wanted to play Scion and use new ranged attack and two handed sword passives are on the way to Acrobatics (I always take acrobatics for my non caster chars )
So far it is fun, more fun then I remember in Open Beta, I am still in normal act 3.

I've never played an LS build to end game, but probably something like Lightning Strike + Weapon Elemental Damage + Faster Attacks + Added Fire Damage + Multistrike + Elemental Proliferation If you need to use Blood Magic gem swap out added fire or Multi Since Weapon Ele got nerfed he has to see how what the DPS does. Last I played it was Lightning Strike > Weapon Elemental Damage > Faster Attacks > Pierce > Multistrike and then either Mana Leech, Life Leech or something else like you said. Thiough, Pierce is not necessary if the Lightning Strike gem has high quality. I somehow forgot LMP... Probably necessary too! edit: Failed to notice he said Crit build... then I'd go: Lightning Strike, Lesser Multiple Projectiles, Faster Attacks, (Pierce), Increased Critical Multiplier, Multistrike, Increased Critcal Strikes in that order
Thanks for the replies guys. Some people say Fork is better than LSP? What do you think about that?

I don't personally like Fork with LS. With a quality LS or pierce, your projectiles just shoot through the monsters; the AoE damage is quite satisfactory. Fork can work though.
