12th, 5th Ranger. Kinda low for a lvl 21 run. I had 350hp and 62% lightning resist for the dischargers. Got 3 discharges in the face, barely lost half my HP. Feels pretty good. Makes you forget your sub-100dps.
Athosuk, I try to get level 3.75 before the 3rd zone, usually 3 in the first zone if I find blue packs. You simply run out of flasks too often if you get to necros before that with no damage. Then try to get almost 5 before the goatmen area if your stuff is still garbage. Crude bow vs goatmen is dumb.
As for Fleep and setting records, you really have to play aggro in the early zones, always kiting forward, in the middle of packs. It's really hard actually. Know what treasure chests to look for and where. Although this seems a tad overrated, as you'll find only 1, maybe 2 large chests in the entire run (found none this run, and looked for it in at least 5 zones).
By the time I get to Simian, Fleep is usually almost a full zone ahead. He dies often in the process, but that's how you set records. You can check his VoDs too. Try his record run. Starts at 53:30.

Anyone up for doing the rogue exiles party race in 2 hours or so? Msg me in game .. @LagLovah I can play most all classes except duelist/shadow
|
thinking of doing my first ever race soon, been playing enough to have a well enough idea of how the game works, read some stuff and also watched some, any advice some of you more experienced guys to give to someone just starting their first try? maybe classes/quick tips, anything would be useful, thanks!

I want to make a discharger in regular HC. Is it viable to go the Voll's Protection route with Discharge? Can I do it without Voll's Devotion amulet? HC Dischargers w/ Voll's Protection: what ammy do you use?

Rogue exiles race are tons of fun. Need decent gear to kill them initially but the snowball effect from their drops is insane. Was at 250dps cleave at merveil, woulda been more but some jerk ranger though sadimas was better for his trash RoA than ele cleave ( Ended up in top 20 overall... did whole race no quicksilver no ms boots. Never again will I trust a pub party to make a tp at hailrake when im running ledge for them.

Heh, no pressure, you'll probably be stressed and feel like shit when you die at first, but it's part of the process. Classes that are underplayed imo are Shadow and Templar. Duelist is the easiest but also overplayed. Marauder could be a good choice too. Looks decently fun, powerful, and less competition. Ranger had a lot of new players since the tree remake (which doesn't change anything in short races, really), and Witch is apparently hard as hell.
If you're playing Descent (and you should), learn what to Alch and when, and keep a list of the chests you want to pick. Once you've picked a class, I'm sure folks in here will give you some real advice. Have fun !

I am done with Descent, died again in the Ribbon zone. This time it was absurd. I died in a room I never even entered. I hit my /oos macro and I'm standing in a room full of LMP casters that I specifically avoided. Until this desync is fixed Descent can kiss my a**. Second race in a row in which I die to desync in the same zone.

3rd, 1st Ranger. 1.3M, so close to a record. Got a good composite again, with 67% IPD, but I still don't farm Desecrated fast enough. Got there with 4 minutes left and only got ~300k out of it. Had 350hp and -8% Lightning this time, so it was really easy aside from rare chargers with auras.
Edit: Yeah, ribbons is terrible when you try to snipe those stupid curtains. If you forget shift for one attack, you can appear anywhere. I actually skipped a lot of ribbons because of low HP and my best bet was hoping for a great Hall.

Is there anywhere we can see a list of where the possible large chest rooms will spawn and on what levels? I'm currently looking for that and trying to learn tricks for fighting the zone bosses as a ranger. I just learned about pulling the witch on the goat level behind the wall to the chests so she has nothing to detonate. Just got a new personal best at 14, but I know I made a lot of mistakes that run and could definitely do better.

I skip the witch on Goatmen unless I need the XP for lvl 6. She has way too much HP and lvl 9 gear is useless. I skip Messier as well, and Sawbones if my damage is bad (i.e. no short bow or iron ring). I usually skip Merveil, she's not worth it unless your RoA one shots her spawns. Then you can skip the Ribbon bosses; way too dangerous.
As for Large chests, they're very random. I didn't get any this race either, even though I looked for it 4-5 times. My highest luck so far has been at the bottom right in the Spider zone. Skeletal zone often has one East toward the bottom, sometimes in a hallway next to the guaranteed chests. But it can spawn top left in both zones. Goatmen I've seen it twice top right, and it has spider spawns so it's great XP. Problem is, you usually don't need it at that point as a Ranger, and once again, level 7 gear is useless. I've seen it a few times in Abyss if you stick to the East wall on your way south, but it's very dangerous. Champion daughters will mass spawn sploders from the other side of the chest, and you can't easily snipe them since since you're going downward.
Watch Fleep's VoDs if you want to pick some more tricks. His early game is impressive. Here's his latest run.

Died at rank 5, was #1 duelist since helmann died. Felt pretty confident despite my shitty gear. Thought I could take 2 hits from sins3 boss since I had greater healing pots, but my hp pool was too low. Well it did work once, maybe I got critt or shock stacked the second time. Had already done spider lair and boss almost dead with still 1 hour to go

For descent - http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/442549/page/1 I wrote down which chests to take as duelist on a piece of paper that I have next to me when racing so I didn't have to tab out. Saves you quite some time.
For regular races - http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Quest_Rewards Plan somewhat ahead of time so that you know whether or not it's worth it to tp back to town to pick up the quest reward.
And just some good advice in general. If the mob is a single white mob that you need one more hit to finish of and you don't need the experience desperately, just keep on running. Ideally you want to kill at least 3 mobs every time you stop. Yeah sometimes you have to settle for 2, but unless it's blue or yellow mobs you really want them to be 3+. This is why aoe is king and cleave is such an amazing leveling ability. Even with shit gear you can do very good. I know that Helmann often use leap slam in races, but I have bad experience with 2handers, maybe I'll give it a try one day.
When you kill Brutus you automatically get the warp point in prisoners gate, and since you always get an aura from the kill quest it's worth going back to town. So what you want to do is pick up the items you might need, quickly log out and in again, end up back in town in front of the quest char, get gem maybe sell something if it was just junk, then tp to prisoners gate. Saves you a decent amount of precious seconds.
Normally when you play you sell a lot of junk, I personally don't bother since it might fill up your inventory when you least want it to, and the shards takes so long to stack up. Sometimes you have to turn around to pick something up which waste more seconds.
Duelist get both hp and damage early on which is why they are always the most popular pick (op!) And you will never place top 10 by playing safe. Every single top 10 placement I have I've taken a shit ton of risks. You even see people die in top 5 every single race.
edit: And if you run out of ID scrolls you can sell a single orb of transmute (turn white to magic) for 4 ID scrolls from the vendor. Always rush straight for Hillock, don't kill anything. If hillock only drops junk, use the first 3 id scrolls you start with to buy a hp ring from the vendor.

Thanks! Yeah Fleep's VoD's are actually where I've learned everything about racing from haha, I've only been watching/running for a few days and his runs are great. I can never pull off zone 1 or 2 like he does. I never thought about skipping Messier but I probably should unless I have good damage at that point, as it always takes me way too long to kill him.

Ok so, today was an absolutely insane day. Got 2nd ranger in the 2h Solo, almost won a Demi again. And then I six linked some guy's chest for 10 ex in less than 400 fusings.
here's the vod: http://en.twitch.tv/slixsc/b/437558668

Is it easier to get a 5link with 5 sockets or 6 sockets? Just got hold of a Carcass jack for 12 chaos with max life and resist roll.

Just ask a 7th grader near you. No homework threads on TL !
For when no 7th grader is at hand: + Show Spoiler +When a blind Zorox goes into a fruit store. Is it easier to get 5 apples if he picks 5 random fruit or 6?

Picking up this game after several months of inactivity I got lazy made a marauder that just uses sweep, life leech, blood magic, multistrike, melee physical damage on 2 handed maces. All i do is pick up hp and hp regen. Use auras for more def and life regen take up all my mana since i only use sweep for everything.
Any critiques i'm looking to be as lazy as possible. Passive Tree I'm just using Armor, Evasion and life regen auras atm not sure if that's best, also not sure on my gem choices for sweep currently lvl 55 only took me a couple hours over a week probably the easiest character i've ever leveled.
