Hello, fellow TLers! Earlier today, there was a thread entailing the various different interesting tabletop delights that users enjoy, or remember fondly. Games such as Settlers of Catan, Axis & Allies, Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, Space Alert, and many other fun board games one might find at a hobby shop (Not monopoly, scrabble, etc).
![[image loading]](http://www.chuck-a-con.net/claydowling_d20.png)
I did a quick search, and there was no thread similar to what I am suggesting. The closest thing I found was this + Show Spoiler +http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=2971 But it still isn't the same idea.
What I think may be a fun idea, would be to have a team liquid game night. Perhaps once a week, TLers could join together in the team liquid vent (or a private skype chat), and load up their board game modules using the vassal engine. http://www.vassalengine.org/ At vassalengine.org, you can download a program that lets you load in downloadable modules (also found on the vassalengine website) that provide the board game, all pieces, and the ability to play over the internet. This would be perfect for a fun, free game night!

EDIT: Well, it seems like people strongly prefer Skype over any alternative, and while teamspeak does have push to talk, skype will make things simpler for the first few game nights. So, PM me your skype usernames and I'll add you to my friend's list, and we'll try and figure out a time that is good for everyone.
Team Liquid's TeamSpeak server! http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=173048 Also, would you guys like a comprehensive list of board-gamers so that you can get in touch with them to play during non-game nights for fun? If so, let me know. I won't put your user name on a list unless you specifically ask me to (Respecting privacy for the win).
Though, this could be a bit of an undertaking, as this OP would require constant maintenance. I can keep a list of people interested, and update the OP with a link to the vassal client download, and the module of the week (Whatever it may be). However, I would like some feedback from you guys about whether this is something you'd be interested in, or whether we should forget about it. So let me know what you think! Also, anyone who would be willing in helping to host the game nights (preferably people with knowledge of vassal, or other similar (maybe better?) programs) please let me know, or PM me! This may be too much to take on alone.

what games? edit: retarded edit edit: im the retarded one, not the post

I do not have much free time but if it fits in I'd be really interested. I do not know a lot of board games though, so it might be interesting if I know in advance what we are gonna be playing so I can check the rules.
|
Yeah, I'd be interested. However, I don't have a mic, so is there any other way for talking, like a irc/chat room?

I'd get people to make some suggestions on game night (I'd probably just pick a popular, fun game at random unless people start getting involved and making suggestions). Then each game night, I'll ask people what they recommend for next week, and pick the one with the most recommendations. (Same game cannot played two weeks in a row unless there is some kind of landslide demand for it). But yeah, scheduling will be the tricky part, and where I'll need the most suggestions.

You can write on skype, I don't think it is a big issue, but it's surely less practical.
|
On June 29 2011 12:46 Latrommi wrote: Yeah, I'd be interested. However, I don't have a mic, so is there any other way for talking, like a irc/chat room? The games typically have in-game chat boxes. Or if not you could just join the skype call and type in skype chat.

Oh, ok then. But can I ask when the first game night would be? I'm not home from a trip until late july, so I was wondering when I would be able to join in.

Well depending on the popularity of the idea, there may not even be a first game night, so it's a bit tough to predict. It should become clear in a few days, though. I'd recommend that you check back, since I'll be updating the OP depending on the feedback I get.

I don't think it is scheduled yet, but basically I would like it to be on Saturday or Sunday.
Another problem I just found out: The night is not the same time for everyone on TL, unless OP was only talking to americans.

We would probably just have to pick a time zone, and add it to the OP (Time zone would be based on whatever time zone has the majority of users interested), and that is what we would go on.

Logical, but I would surely be less interested if it was daytime, but anyways, we'll see how it goes on.

I mean, logically even if we set the time zone to a european time, we still couldn't have it be at 6PM GMT or something like that, because then nobody in America, Canada, South America could play. Europeans may have to stay up later, but it should work out in the end.

What if we don't know how to play these games you're talking about

On June 29 2011 13:08 dhe95 wrote:What if we don't know how to play these games you're talking about When I update the OP with next week's game, I'm going to link to the rules, and ask that everyone interested in participating read over them before then. We'll also go over the rules briefly if people have any questions at the start of the game.

I think teamspeak would be a much better option than skype, as it allows push to talk. Skype can be really annoying with lots of people in one call.
|
I don't mind the speaking medium as long as it is free and doesn't take much space on the computer.
|
As someone that never grew up playing board games (except like a few games of Monopoly, I only just discovered Risk ) I am so down for this.

I almost never played another board game than monopoly or risk, but it might be fun to discover new ones.

Axis and Allies would be fucking sweet. It only supports 5 players though but we could all break up into different groups. Love that game.
|
TL uses Teamspeak, not Vent.
|
I'd totally do this. Like a TL D&D thing would be sweet.
|
On June 29 2011 14:03 GrapeD wrote: I'd totally do this. Like a TL D&D thing would be sweet.
Agree, but someone would have to help me understand the game more =D
But seriously i think D&D would be too complicated to manage on TL.
|
I might be interested in this, depending on the night/game, etc.
I don't really have many people I know to play with, so this could be fun :p
|
On June 29 2011 14:03 GrapeD wrote: I'd totally do this. Like a TL D&D thing would be sweet.
I would be so down for that. I've listened to podcasts that played D&D(see YoGPoD), and it sounded like insane fun. It would probably take the whole day to do, and if we were able to actually find a day to do that, I would be completely for that.

Hardly ever post but I'd be in for the nights I could make.

Has anyone considered playing Puzzle Strike?
http://www.fantasystrike.com/dev/
It's a game developed by David Sirlin of SF2 fame and based heavily on Dominion. I'm not the biggest Sirlin fan but PS is a blast and I liked it enough to blow $60 on buying a copy of it to play with friends face to face. The online client is free, the game is super easy to play, there's no reason not to get a bunch of people together for it. I'm more than willing to teach anyone that wants to learn it.
|
Very cool initiative ^^ Hope it works out!

On June 29 2011 14:02 FreezerJumps wrote: TL uses Teamspeak, not Vent. Oh yeah, I just checked. I didn't know they shut the vent server down. Well, TS3 is just as good.
So, it seems that there is enough general interest in game night so give it a go for a few attempts and see how things work out. So, I'd like people to start recommending a best night to do this. I know people are usually going out on Friday nights, and Sunday nights won't be good for people who have to work. So, let me hear some suggestions about a good night to try this on.
|
Saturday night's the best for me, or Monday night.

this. is. brilliant.
add me to it
|
I'd love to be part in this. I'm really into these kind of games and would like to play them with TL Skype seems like a good and working option (just make a group conversation and add people who want to join). Monday night sounds like a good idea.
edit: noticed that an awesome game like this one wasn't there in the modules of vassal. Does anyone know this?
|
An epic Axis and Allies game would be pretty bomb

I think that game looks more like a card game, and Vassal generally deals with board games like memoir '44 and carcassone. But yes, basically I'd have a check in for who is actually intent on playing on a particular night, and then I'd add those people to a private call and we would go from there. It seemed like a good idea to me.

Sounds like a cool idea but I would probably need help with the rules because i've never played any of those board games.
Vent or TS sounds better than Skype.
|
if it fits in my schedule then I'm all for it

I would be in, but I suck at playing board games and the only one I've heard of is Settlers of Catan, but the name is all I know. Can I still play?

this is a great idea. Im up for every game and dont care if it is on skype or vt or ts but problem is that i dont know how to play board games so im going to need some guide. but im up for this !

As the organizer said many times, rules are gonna be posted before the games take place so you,re gonna be able to check them. Don't worry about that.

I am interested for sure, and moreso when my schedule frees up a bit more in a couple weeks.
Also I am happy to teach/play with people who are not familiar with any of the games that are chosen as they learn the ropes.

I'm totally interested. I have no experience with any games but I'm willing to learn. PMing you now.

I would be all for a tutorial night, considering that most people wouldn't know how to play all of the games, only a few

Depending on the game I'll play. I have no interest in learning a new board game that I'll play once with TL (no offense). It'd also be more convenient to use the TeamSpeak server, but it shouldn't be hard to find a few other people who think the same seeing as most boardgames are played with just a few people.
Is there a reason you're excluding Monopoly though? I love that game so much :0
