Neptune's Pride is a game that I managed to discover randomly just recently. It's a very basic multiplayer 4x (read: civilizationy) game in space, where up to 8 or so players are given some star systems in a galaxy. The economy, industry, and combat portions of the game are all just math, and it is really just an enormously stripped down 4x game in space.
Yet for some reason it is more evil than any other game in existence. It apparently will occupy your entire day. Some people will not be able to sleep.

Being the curious Machiavellian asshole that I am, I was wondering if any other TL people would be interested in signing up for a round to see what it is like. Because surely nobody's going to be that much of a douchebag in game. Right?
It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion. You get to see every single detail of the sudden violence in front of you, and there’s little you can do to stop it. Except when there is, and you get to feel like a god slowing down time, allowing you to react faster than you have any right to. It’s gaming as the master of time, manipulating things to benefit yourself. Except you’re not the only timelord on the pitch, and everyone else gets the same advantage that you do. Every single emotion you feel is amplified to an unbearable degree. Each victory is that much sweeter, every defeat infinitely more crushing. You form plots like some sort of deranged Machiavelli, engineering circumstances until your enemies are locked in a chessmate, just open for you to manipulate and black mail.
Having read all the warnings, who's up for this shit.
I'll finish reading the game report in a day or two, and then decide if I want to play there. Either way, it looks really cool, and I hope I have the time to join in on a game.
Having finished reading various parts of the site and that report, I am very eager to get started on this. I'll end up being killed off early now that ive gotten myself pumped up
While I think that I will be sticking with Sins of a Solar Empire and Galactic Civilizations 2 by Stardock, this was quite a good read and I am glad that I was introduced.

It seems everyone needs credits to join a premium game. I'm sure that first method of yours will work just fine though.
EDIT: Oops, I see what you mean now. I still think we'll get by just fine with the first method.

Do the first method, we would all have to pay to get into a premium game.
I'd vote for "everyone signs up for a free game at the same time". They seem to go up fairly regularly.
Due to timezones and stuff this will probably mean some people might miss it, but I find the credits way too pricy. Sure, a single game might last for weeks, but I'm not willing to spend 20$ on credits for a game I'm not sure I'll actually like or play long-term.
We could pool the money, but that would mean that the recipient would be obliged to host a total of four games. Since we all seem to have no prior experience with NP, this is a gamble as well. The players or even the host might lose interest after a while, and the host would have to commit to 4 games he might not even want to play.
*edit: How about we pick a time/date most people across the timezones are comfortable with, then monitor this thread for 30 or 60 minutes and all join the first empty game available? Should be doable.

Hm. I had hoped that it'd not happen like it did, i.e. everyone picking the first best game mere hours after the possibility of doing so was mentioned. 12:00 KST is/was 4:00 AM my time ... sigh.
I've never been too much into browser strategy games but this one is very well planned... I'm sure it will end the same way as the review... there is no other option! we shall all go crazy in the end! That's the end of the universe! 2012!

Quite a nice resume of what somebody needs to know & understand before/while playing the game.
I'm sensing that the time zones are going to be a big factor during late battles... what a mess nobody is going to sleep during that time jajaja. 1 Chile, 2 Poland, 1 Germany, 2 US, 1 Canada, 1 UK, Sweet.
And I'm eager to know how the other games are developing into! some map updates wouldn't hurt :D

As you can see Capri(Red) is getting closer to my border, I think we might try to grab the same star, so we'll see what happens, as for now I have 1 more +1 weapon than him! but he has more ships.. So far my plan is send one fleet to absorb yellow(he abandon the game I believe) and the other three to patrol border once I finish getting the stars near me. For those that don't know, beside your inbox is a number, and that number is the number of unread messages you currently have.
I know that In all of my games, there are a lot of people who are not responding to messages. It would be at least nice to get a "yes", or a "no", or "we'll think about it" even if you send ablank message letting people know you have at least read what they have sent.
There are deals and agreements that are time sensative in this game, concerning expansion and tech trading, and if you do not talk, then you will be left behind. This is more for the newer people to NP, but being a loner doesn't work in this game, be social, its nice.
You don't have to RP, you don't have to write anything eloquent or elaborate... just something that lets others know you are alive.
I do not wish to wage war on anyone at the current time, I only want to have good diplomatic relations which can hopefully lead to technological gains for both parties, as well as agreed upon borders.
As well, starting a raport will be nice to get to know people, I mean as much fun as it is playing with and against faceless atomatons, its a lot better to play with friends and people you know.
I think a blog could be a nice format to gather war stories, battle reports and general chat concerning our game. Only problem I see for the time being is that there's not too much that can be told without revealing strategies or alliances.
I think I'll set up a blog here on TL for our game, maybe people are interested in it. If so, we could all work together to keep it alive and up-to-date, if not, we can just ignore it .
Yea it is a bit hard to get the right balance on here between wanting to make it interest for people to read and also not revealing too much which is especially important at this stage of the game. But the blog is a good idea and it'll be interesting to see if we can develop it in a decent manner
We could also, if people wanted to keep a personal blog to be posted at the end of the game, similar to how the people at rock paper shotgun did it... where we can reveal what we did after wards and people can be like "ohhhh you".

Preferably with people a bit more into, for a lack of a better word, the "Roleplaying" aspect of it. Not just be a faceless automaton, but actually answer messages, etc.
Playing a game since a couple of days back. It's my first game, but it's really awesome! I'm allied with everyone, and I've made them all start attacking each others, while I sit back telling them my reinforcements are "soon there". I realize this wont work for too long, but once they figure it out my tech and empire will be pretty darn big.

Ummm Just letting you guys know I lost track of the account and may not be able to log on on my games... I use firefox clear recent history thing and yeah. I made a new email and stuff just to play this game but I don't know the password nor the answer to my secret question...so I don't think I will be able to log back in. Too many people go afk on these games.. Game 1 everyone is now AI except 3 person(Now 2 person since I will become AI soon) . Game 2, half the people become AI.... Sorry about this.
