I mean, there's only three packs ><

There a chance in each pack that a common is replaced by a foiled card of any rarity. You might very well end up getting two rares and/or mythics in the same pack (I got a mythic and a foiled rare yesterday in one of my pack)

Not at competitive REL. The packs are screened and registered by the judges before the tournament and all the foils are removed and replaced by a random common.

Do you mean Professional REL? I've played plenty of Comp REL sealed tournaments (PTQs) and this never happened.

Yeah, that's how they do it at pro tours and maybe day 2 of GPs. Day 1 sealed GP they don't do that and top 8 of PTQ draft they don't do that.

Just curious what everyone's opinion on the following is (getting back into Magic, not looking at competitive yet);

Bolster deck with lots of low power/toughness creatures leading up to:

Archfiend of Depravity (control their creature side)
Ghastly Conscription (on my own graveyard)
Harsh Sustenance (post ghastly)

Good side measures are
Mastery of the Unseen, Citadel Siege, and Palace Siege

Seems fine, but the Ghastly Conscription + Harsh Sustenance seems unnecessary. You could just play more creatures or better support spells. Abzan colors don't have good deck manipulation or card draw, so having Ghastly Conscription and Harsh Sustenance both at the right time is unlikely.

Actually Abzan has decent card draw right now with Read the Bones, scry 2 draw 2 for 2 life is pretty solid, plus the Charm, its not too bad right now.

Then that would mean less creatures and stuff to fuel the Ghastly Conscription idea. He'd spend too much time durdling around instead of developing a board.

I'm trying to build a standard sultai delve deck with the limited cards I've got from boosters & FNM. If someone could give me some pointers on what kinds of cards (either specific ones I should find or general removal/self mill/etc) I should put in/take out it'd be really appreciated Most of the cards in the deck are as many as I own of them except for dual lands.

Creatures: 19
2x Embodiment of Spring
3x Satyr Wayfinder
4x Sultai Skullkeeper
2x Courser of Kruphix
1x Nyx Weaver
1x Sidisi, Brood Tyrant
2x Sultai Soothsayer
1x Champion of Stray Souls
3x Stormtide Leviathan

Instants: 10
1x Empty the Pits
1x Hero's Downfall
1x Murderous Cut
2x Rakshasa's Disdain
2x Rescue from the Underworld
1x Sultai Charm
2x Unmake the Graves

Sorcery: 8
1x Commune with the Gods
2x Dead Drop
1x Fearsome Awakening
1x See the Unwritten
1x Taigam's Scheming
2x Treasure Cruise

Lands: 23
2x Dismal Backwater
3x Jungle Hollow
2x Thornwood Falls
1x Opulent Palace
1x Temple of Deceit
4x Evolving Wilds
4x Forest
3x Swamp
3x Island

General idea I was going for was delve a bunch and then resurrect a Stormtide and use him to carry me to victory. Backup plan of Empty the Pits, I actually do own a copy of Ghastly Conscription but I don't know where to make cuts to put that fine fellow in. Sideboard currently consists of a couple Bile Blights, Drown in Sorrows, and more counters/removal.

It's a really nice idea and the decklist is pretty decent, but its fairly light on mainboard removal. With only those 3-5 cards and 14 self mill cards(possibly too many honestly, that's almost a full 25% of the deck), most of your removal will probably find itself in the graveyard without being used. Some of the bile blights and drown in sorrows might be better going straight to the main deck in place of a few of the other self mill cards.

One of the other good cards that I think would be really nice in something like this is Bitter Revelation. It enables you to self mill and give yourself the most ability to control what goes into the graveyard and what goes to your hand. It costs 2 life, but that's a small price to pay honestly, once the stormtide is out and you have control your opponent won't be able to do that much anyways. That and maybe a couple extra commune with the gods to best control what goes into your graveyard and what gets in your grasp.

I should also mention Elvish Mystic for this deck as really solid mana ramp cheap financially, and a very solid 1-drop.

Thanks for all the feedback! I agree, when just testing how the deck works I end up losing all that removal and banking on getting stormtide to work. I'll try to find myself some Bitter Revelations and Commune with the Gods for that nice, consistent self mill.

Also putting in Tasigur because I forgot I had him and he's amazing :D

Hi guys, it's been a while but I'm back!

My friend lent me his standard deck to play tomorrow at game day, and I wanted to get some feedback on a few last minute tweaks. Unfortunately I don't own that many standard cards outside of KTK / FRF draft commons / uncommons so I'll comment on what I have.

+ Show Spoiler [Abzan Whip / Midrange?] +

3 Elvish Mystic
3 Satyr Wayfinder
4 Sylvan Caryatid
4 Courser of Kruphix
4 Siege Rhino
3 Hornet Queen
2 Ashen Rider

3 Commune with the Gods
2 Hero's Downfall
2 See the Unwritten
2 Whip of Erebos
2 Murderous Cut
1 Endless Obedience
1 Rescue from the Underworld

(24 Lands)
4 Sandsteppe Citadel
4 Windswept Heath
2 Llanowar Wastes
2 Caves of Koilos
2 Temple of Silence
1 Temple of Plenty
1 Temple of Malady
1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
5 Forest
1 Swamp
1 Plains

1) I think I want to cut the mystics (they are only good in devotion decks right?), and I want to bump up satyr to 4 (they were sweet last rotation, should still be good here). I think I want to add 2 midrange creatures, so I have a choice between Reaper of the Wilds, Necropolis Fiends, 1 Anafenza, 1 Doomwake Giant and 1 Soulflayer. Which creatures do you feel are most relevant?

2) I'm looking at the removal suite and kinda wondering if Abzan Charms / Suspension Fields / Banishing Lights might be worth considering. I also have despises, and 1 thoughtseize, which other abzan decks seem to be more heavy on.

I love 2-ofs more than anyone else in the known universe.

That's a lot of weird 2-ofs.

I would cut the Mystics, yes. Doomwake, Sidisi and Torrent Elemental are safer than Ashen Rider, I think. Your deck can replicate her effect almost always. I think you need another Murderous Cut. I think you will wan the Thoughtseize in the main (see if you can borrow more) and Reclamation Sages in the boards. If you can borrow or find 1 Crux of Fate, it's nice to have in the board too.

I wouldn't play the white enchantments for removal when you have safer options already.

Edit: Sorry, just noticed you're playing Junk colors. My eyes must have rolled over Abzhan. Yeah...ignore my advice. Never played Abzhan Whip.

play whip of erebos, mill a hornet queen, win games:D
no but seriously....tasigur is just retardedly good. i would wait a bit until he gets cheaper(hopefully he will? like mantis rider) and then trade buy him, you really want 4 of him and sidisi brood tyrant aswell. they are just too good for your delve deck to only have one of each. especially tasigur since you can more or less chose what cards you get from your graveyard by delving the wrong ones. this will eliminate the problem with your lost removal.

btw...cant see it anymore this friggin abzan ^^ :D

I've gone 2-2 with my brew two weeks running. It's Modern Grixis tempo. I've got FNM write-ups on tappedout - http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/23-01-15-dtz-grixis-delver/

Haven't tried Dark Confidant yet, but don't think I need it. Plus, there's lots of burn running around, and that's a tough matchup as is. The pestermite will be replaced with another Clique when i can afford it (the pestermite has been pretty good actually). Other obvious exlusions are Yung peezy and thoughtseize, I tested them a bit online, but I didn't like them. Apart from that, any thoughts?

Played an Esper list similar to this. Dark Confidant can be just as big of an asset as he is a liability in decks like these.

Main deck hand disruption is huge. Look at Slaughter Pact and Smother as possible removal spells.

Olivia Voldaren is a good card in these colors as well. Fulminator Mage in the board for Tron and GBx decks is probably good as well.

The most obvious thing I notice is that your manabase could be retooled to be much more effective. Since you never really play anything above 3 CMC, drop the check-lands (e.g. Drowned Catacomb) and replace them with Fast Lands (e.g. Darkslick Shores). It makes 2 land hands more keepable since you won't be reliant on drawing specific lands to turn-on your non-Shockland duals.

You should also add Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize. Rip important threats out of their hand, land a cheap threat, protect it, and ride it to victory. That's the main reason for playing Black rather than straight UR Delver.

I'm also not convinced about Keranos in the Sideboard when you're running 20 lands.

I'm running terminates instead of smother, never had any mana issues. Swapping one out for a Slaughter Pact sounds like a good idea though.

What do you think I should cut for the hand disruption? I was thinking of cutting the two spell snares for 2 Inquisitions, but decided I preferred playing at instant speed.

I might get my hands on an olivia and play it mainboard in place of pestermite.

My local meta has no Tron decks so I've been lucky enough to not need land destruction in the board (I generally prefer Disdainful stroke in that matchup anyway). And i can race Scapeshift now that Dig got banned.

Cut the counters. They're almost half of your non-creature spells, and if you rip a good card out of their hand then you've saved yourself from needing to counter it in the first place.
ModeratorA dream. Do you have one that has cursed you like that? Or maybe... a wish?

Makes sense. -2 mana leak, -2 spell snare -1 spell pierce. +2 Thoughtseize +3 Inquisition, does that sound good? Or do I cut the remands instead?

So for those experienced in the slightest with MTGO, how exactly do I go about purchasing packs (for limited drafting) from bots? How do I know which ones are 'trustworthy?'

I havent played my esper list in awhile but I remember Spell Snare being my best counter spell in like 70% of my match ups. getting Bob/goyf/ooze/voice/plating/ravager on the draw is so relevant in a tempo list like this.

I think removing a terminate, removing the pierce and Countersqualls should be sufficient with 4 hand disruption spells.
