This isn't related to online but I figured I'd ask here. I don't really play magic but it was my friend's birthday last week so I decided I would get some some new release nyx stuff. I was planning on shipping him a fat pack with 9 booster packs but I also saw the Ajani, mentor of heros guy who was pretty cool. He plays the 100 card single only format mostly.

Any opinions on which would be the better present, fat pack or single card?

This thread is for all things magic, not just online. a mod really needs to rename this thread :S

well, ajani's a pretty good card in certain EDH (100 card) decks (Marath, Ghave, Rith, Enchantress, maybe some others). Do you know if he plays a Green/White deck? If he does, it's a pretty good choice.

I'd also like to note that fat packs aren't really the best deal - you can buy 9 boosters for under $36 pretty easily, and fatpacks are usually $40+. it's not too terrible, but maybe think about buying loose booster packs instead.

buying veteran players stuff is tough without knowing what they already have, tbh.
Yeah, I've played with some of his decks but I can't remember exactly which colors they all were since some of them were tri-color. He's got like 4 which is part of the problem, but I don't think he has a green/white one so then probably ajani isn't the best choice.

The booster box would be $100 and $2.78/booster but that's a little too much to spend! The fat pack was $36 (w/ free amazon shipping) so its basically $4.00/booster. I could do 9 boosters for $3.55 each if they were loose. Maybe I'll do the boosters since I can't make a purchase specific to his collection very well.

Fat packs also come with 2 deck boxes (that are useless for 100 card decks), a spindown (which I collect), and a fat pack box that can hold a few hundred cards (which I use frequently). It may be worth it just for the extras. Apart from that, there are often throwback packs at places like Target and Wal-mart that have 3 old boosters and a promo for $10. Could be worth it.

Edit: For clarity, a spindown is a D20 with the numbers arranged so you can easily count down your life total.

Edit edit: Further clarification, a D20 is a 20 sided die and you have 20 life in Magic.

I'd recommend getting your friend some sleeves. Buying single cards is a nice idea, but without knowing the game it's really tough. If you knew one of the commanders your friend used, buying a foil copy might be cool. Packs in general are pretty bad value, especially for people like your friend.

Can one of the mods rename this thread to just Magic the Gathering? The online distinction is like confusing as hell for new people posting here.

Get him a Green Sun's Zenith, a foreign one like French. I don't think there's a single deck playing Green that wouldn't run one in EDH. Wordly Tutor is another one. Given that you have no clue what your friend actually has, these two cards would go into any Green EDH and your friend would appreciate it.

An alternative is to get him one with an altered art which is generally pricier.

Anyways happy gift hunting.

Yeah that's probably a good idea lol. Done! Thread renamed.

I second the suggestion of altered art. Altered borderless art is gorgeous if you find a good seller and you don't run the risk of getting some super tacky alter. You might need to do some hunting around for a good artist and there might be a time delay but it's a very sincere gift. Also, people who play Commander (the 100 single-card format) tend to be really attached to their singletons and an alter seems like a great thing for them. Foreign Cards can also be good but might be harder to get depending on where you live and where you buy cards from.

Outside of something like GSZ, you could also find out what Legendary cards he likes and go for them (Trostani, Tolsimir Wolfblood, etc.)

This needs a lot more details than this. Mostly because I'm too stupid to see how this could be.

Carytid with Courser and Eidolon. Use Fonts of Fertility and Fortune. Play Kiora and Jace (although I am not totally sold on Jace here). So basically you have 2 engines that place nice with each other and the mana ramp that keep your hands stocked.

oh wow, didn't think of it like that. I kept imagining a hard control deck with lots of removal and wraths while whittling them down with a God. Your RUG idea looks much more ridiculous its awesome.

I tried that with UWR, it's just not worth it. I run 0 counterspells main simply because you draw more anyways with the enchantress engine.

Hi I've played zero games of magic and own no cards. I bet someone a large sum of money that I would enter this event and win more than I lose in the first day of swiss. My plan was to copy decklists from people who are actually good at the game and spam games.
I've done quite a bit of research and I understand many of the popular decks. Which deck do you guys recommend I practice and play with at the event?
I've heard U/W control makes lots of nerds angry which sounds like a blast, but my friends tell me it requires too much game knowledge to pull off in just 2 short months. I argue I have a good work ethic and plenty of people who'd practice with me online.

RW Burn is also a good candidate for its sometimes uncanny ability to just win games it shouldn't.

In case anyone is super interested, Saito is linking picture of their Test Decks for the new meta. Bunch of neat little tech in each. @TomoharuSaito Is his twitter, but more importantly I wana talk about this deck.

https://twitter.com/TomoharuSaito/status/462149881105100800/photo/1

Does that list have much merit? The list feels really weak to me, especially in the early game.
