Oh, how I love Solemn Simulacrum.

I'll be going to a PTQ tomorrow although I'm not allowed to play (sick brag), and in between my money drafts I'm looking forward to seeing what does well in the new Standard.

Community event this morning in 8 hours, free pack for everyone who signs up, you don't have to play. Just build a "Planeswalker deck" with your planeswalker pack that came with the game/was recently given to you, enter tournament, don't show up, win free pack. If you do want to play it's 4 rounds swiss, 4-0s get 3 packs + the free pack. No other prizes I don't think, I'm not playing personally, but good luck to anyone who wants too.

Has anybody heard of The Magic Cruise?

A company called Legion Events has held The Magic Cruise for a few years now. It's a one week cruise with a group of other magic players. I actually went on the magic cruise 2 back in 2010 it was pretty amazing. Even some of the members of Magic R&D were there. Evan Erwin covered the event on his show.

Richard Garfield is supposed to be going next year and sign ups ended yesterday, if I had the money I woulda signed up. It's 900something for the cruise, 50 for all the events (including free sealed/drafts), plus travel and expenses.

One big thing about the cruise is all of the excursions are not paid for. If you want to go out and do anything that isn't just walking around, add about another hundred at least per stop. Overall it's a lot of fun though. Meeting Garfield would be nice. I got to meet Ken Nagle & Dave Guskin from WotC. They were both pretty cool dudes.

god I am so addicted to Magic right now, haven't even played any SC2 lately. Also just went to a FNM at a local shop and played magic live for the first time in over 10 years. Felt dorkier then ever, but definitely had fun (went 2-4 hehe). I see myself playing a lot more in the future, both MTGO and live, just wish it wasn't so expensive to play both. I like how you can rotate different formats, I think all of them are fun from standard, to draft, even pauper on MTGO. Haven't tried EDH yet, too busy with everything else. I can't even settle on a good standard deck to use. i want to get good with one on MTGO and then buy the cards live once I've decided which deck I like best. So far I'm playing Valakut, B/U Tezzeret and Boros. I'm having the most fun with Tezzeret right now=) Also got a cheap mono green infect deck that's just unfair when you get the right draw lol, but it's just a stupid deck I hate it...

I actually didn't realize that Magic was still so popular, it's cool how there's GP's and other events you can go do when they are near your area, just like SC2 =) It's also funny how there's so many cards out there I don't know about since there's like a 10 year gap between when I last played, but it is also cool seeing older cards etc. kind of makes me wish I had at least kept some interest in the game, but oh well. It seems like there's a lot more depth to the game now than when I used to play, I'd recommend anyone who's thinking about it to give it a try. I guess the best players can actually sustain themselves playing for a living, going to pro tour events all around the world and making supplemental income from writing for websites etc. Seems like a pretty fun life (traveling around the world seems awesome) I love SC2, but it's nice to have MTG for someone a little older like myself (28, that's pretty old in SC2 terms heheh) who needs a change of pace once in a while =)

I like Venser, the Sojourner+Oblivion Ring+M12's Sundial of the Infinite.

It's a little slow and takes 3 cards but it really is a nice combo for my favorite planeswalker. I always thought his +2 mechanic was such a clever idea but never really made him "worth" playing. 5CMCUW, 3 loyalty - urgh...but at least he's fun to play with. Also this Sundial seems like a lot of fun.

I like Venser but he comes down on turn 5 and turn 4 is the turn you need to not die on for the foreseeable future.

I stopped playing Magic after Onslaught and just picked up interest again for Scars of Mirrodin, since I now have free time (and expendable income!) The ONE question I have for Wizards, I guess, is What the hell is up with their Planeswalker design?

anybody play at an M12 prerelease this past weekend? I ended up with some clunky UB deck with Grave Titan and Mind Control, plus 3-4 blue fliers but only a splashed Shock and Fireball for removal. Went 2-2, losing to another clunky (BW) Titan deck and to a super fast RW aggro deck (with Gideon but he didn't even need Gideon really). Beat a fairly fast RW aggro deck by Mind Controlling an Inferno Titan g1 and dropping Grave Titan g3, and beat a clunky RG bloodthirst deck by Mind Controlling Garruk's Horde.
M12 might reward aggro considerably more than M11 but Mind Control is still the best~ And Unsummon seems a lot better than usual, obviously for bouncing bloodthirst guys but also as an out to Spirit Mantle (which is crushing on a Spirit Wolf).

Also sick brag post but I opened Garruk AND foil Chandra for 2HG sealed lololol

Opened shit, ended up running a deck of 4 quarter-decks that didn't synergize. My removal was good but my finishers were just Fireball and Harbor Servant...

first sealed i opened really strong white but not very deep.
archon of justice, 2 serra angel, lawkeeper, pacifism, 2-3 griffins.
paired it with blue for mind control, phantasm dragon, 2 looters, divination, mana leak but not much else.

ended up playing very controlly with bunch of counter spells and looting through my deck and pitching all the random shit i had to fill my deck with. pretty much won all my games by sticking a serra angel or archon and then countering/tapping everything. went 4-1 for top 8 and 5 packs. oh and NEVER cast mind control once. sadface.

second sealed opened grave titan, garruk and foil solemn. couldnt play the garruk
ended up being black for titan, 2 grave robbers, doom blade, sorins thirst. white for serra angel, lawkeeper, some random fliers, arbalest elite, o-ring. splashing red off manalithe and RB dual land for 2 shocks.
deck felt much more powerful than my first sealed but lost to super removal.dec, won two rounds, then lost to 2 mind control, 1 diabolic tutor deck. that was super dumb...

I placed 10th out of 25 in my local M12 sealed event. It was my first MtG tournament ever and I began playing casually around SoM. Still, I was hoping to get top-4 =(

I pulled 3 Doomblades and 2 Consume Spirits and a Royal Assassin - so I felt obligated to play black. The deck worked out to be GB control-ish. Garruk's Horde, Pentavus and Overrun were my "bombs." Rares that didn't make the deck were Chandra's Phoenix, Phantasmal Image and some dual land. The winner of the event pulled the Demonic Tutor Demon, two Aegis Angels, 2 Serra Angels, and an Angelic Destiny. I was muy jelly.

In my seal I opened, Primevil Titan into Jace into Phantasmal image and foil phantasmal image in the same pack, a mind control, a pentavus, a dunegrove elder, foil swiftfoot boots and a fireball. Needless to say i went 6-0.
Best play was when my opponent was on 3 lands, i acidic slimed a land on turn 5, then Imaged the slime twice to give him no board to my 6 lands and three 2/2 deathstrikes.

I was wondering if I could get some input on a deck I'm trying to put together. I've been getting back into Magic, playing exclusively limited events. I'd like to think that my game has gotten a bit better and I want to put together a Standard deck for FNMs and Standard events after Zendikar rotates.

UW Control - please disregard the sideboard.

Is Consecrated Sphinx a much better choice than Sphinx of Uthuun? Do I like Venser too much? Can this play right now? Should I cut Frost Titan? If anyone could give my some insight, I'd appreciate it. I have no Magic playing pals and most people at the limited events don't play Standard. Thanks!

I'm running a similar list, but it's much more a midrange deck than what you have here. Suntitan and Phantasmal Image are 4 ofs just because of the late game power that casting 1 titan and getting 4 has. Oblivion Ring needs to be 4 of just because of its power of bogging the game down. The Inkmoth is cute, but I think playing tec edge would most likely suite you better as I can already promise your valakut match is going to be a nightmare.

Blade splicer is undoubtedly a 4 of. Its just too powerful in the format and the fact you can get them back with sun titan/blink them with venser its a solid choice. 4 phantasms are a must, its too good in the deck.

I ran the deck at FNM last week and went 4-1 dropping a match vs a pro tour playing caw player. It pretty much wins if you get to turn 6, the hard part is getting there. Good luck

Thanks for the fast response. About the Inkmoth vs Tectonic Edge, I don't think I'll get serious until after Zendikar rotates, so I'm not worried about destroying Valakuts. I really like Phantasmal Image, he offers really high reward for low risk, but I feel like he's always has that liability.

So do you think I should leave Contagion Clasp, Frost Titan and the Glimmerpoint Stag on the cutting room floor and just slot in 2 Images and a Blade Splicer (<---don't love it)? Would that make the deck more potent?

Tectonic is still my go to card just because of the synergy between it and Sun Titan, and having 3-5 sun titan triggers in 1 turn isn't uncommon. The liability in the Image isn't really a liability. 9/10 if they are going to use a removal spell on a real titan its going to kill it anyway. Plus with it being Sun Titanable its pretty nice.

The thing with Clasp and Titan is that while the effects are nice to have repeats of, they are just simply too slow to get out before dieing. While the same can be said for sun titan, it wins games when there are 4 of it, and I can't make 4 frost titans in one turn. As for Blade Splicer, the card is easily the all star of the deck outside ST + Image. Every time I peel a Splicer I'm never not happy to see it. Its either helps you clog the board so you can get to the famed turn 6, or its an early beat stick to help you get that bit of extra damage you need to win that game.

While stag would fit the deck rather well, it requires other targets that you'd want to blink. Plus I'd rather be casting other spells on turn 4, the DoJ to save my life or the Wall + Image/ double wall/ double image.

I put a copy of the main deck I played last friday in spoilers below. The only real thing that changes from the main deck is if you want DoJ or Timely Reinforcements.
