Christ why was Ramirez allowed on the fucking mound in the first place?! He just allowed a base run after dropping the fucking ball, and before that he hit Hunter, and walked Abreu.

Hopefully Saito can do better, bases loaded.

Man, this whole series just makes me sad. I can't decide which team to hate more, and thus which team to root against. I probably dislike the Angels more at the moment, only by virtue of them being division rivals. So for the time being, I'll join you in your desire to see Takashi do well.

Wow, a comedy of errors continues tonight after that last play. Guererro jogs home, and wouldn't have scored except Lowell screwed up the catch and tag.

Toss in three absolutely BRUTAL calls by the umps on the line and this game is a joke.

I haven't seen any, but was that double play with the bases loaded an no outs as ridiculous as the gamecast made it seem?

I dont think TNT (TBS?) caught it, but on the Japanese broadcast they showed Saito during the break beating up on a cooler and shouting down the dug out. I have never seen a Japanese player that animated... ever.

Yes haha. 5 - 2 force out - 5 tag out.

Hunter slid around the tag and was safe, but got called out anyway. Maybe a makeup call for the two blown calls at first.

Stupid work is forcing me to miss the game... and I feel too guilty to watch an illegal stream on a computer here. My only comfort is that I'll get to watch playoff baseball this weekend!

As it is though, BoSox are looking to get on the board at least, and umm... well, I really hate John Lackey.

Wow, Brian Fuentes sucks--assuming he's still the closer (I realize it's not a save situation, but they usually come in during the playoffs even with slightly larger leads)--but I really doubt he'll suck bad enough to make a game of it. Le sigh.

Game two is Beckett vs Weaver. I would say Beckett is a lock for a strong performance except for his recent back problems. Weaver is either gone in 3 1/3 or will go 8, hard to know who will show up with him. I still have to believe Beckett will pitch a strong game though, no matter the pain. He just has to keep the ball in the yard.

I'd tend to agree with your assessment, Mani, except for the reasoning, which I would make much simpler. Josh Becket is an excellent pitcher, whereas Jered Weaver is merely an above average to good pitcher.

Also, there's the fact that Jered Weaver is after your brains:

Here's the good news though: he's not unreasonable, and will not eat your eyes.

That is a hilarious picture.

Would you really call Beckett an excellent pitcher in the second half of the season though? He seems really vulnerable to the long ball lately. I think he is a post-season kind of guy, so I think he will come through, but he didn't inspire a lot of confidence after the All-Star break with me.

Agreed on Weaver, I just see him as so streaky.

Beckett is a post-season monster. He can have a mediocre season and then just blow up for the playoffs. I'm really confident in him taking the mound tomorrow. Buchholz in game 3 is just not right at all, though, imo.

It kind of depends on if you believe that HR/FB (home runs per fly ball) is a controllable skill by the pitcher. Obviously, a pitcher who is incapable of pitching in the majors will run a noticeably high mark, but for normal pitchers across the spectrum the rate tends to regress towards 11% or so. For the season, he's at just over 12%, which is a little high, but not off the charts. It's definitely spiked in the second half, mostly attributed I think to a game against the Yanks in which he gave up 5HR. That'll skew the results pretty heavily. However, to finish out the season, he allowed exactly 1HR in his final five starts. That's also unlikely to continue. I guess what I'm saying is that no, I don't think he's been particularly homer prone or much worse in the second half than he was in the first; he was likely just a bit more unlucky. He still ran incredibly solid K/BB ratios as well as solid GB/FB ratios. If I were a betting man--and to some degree I am--my money would be on Beckett for this game.

Well its the Yank's year so GO YANKS!!! Im a big fan of the yankees since they only show yankees games on cable here in the Philippines (lol). Ive watched most of their games this season and they are just too good imo. the bull pen is sick and the offense is superb. everyone can actually hit. Hoping to see Cervelli get some playing time though.

meh yeah, i just hate a-rod and the yankees in general. can't hide my bias.

Anyways how about the playoffs so far? 5 out of 8 games decided by 2 or less runs (including the 1 game playoff), 2 extra inning games, and three walk-off wins. It's been about as entertaining as it can get so far.

This article is on the front page of Yahoo:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-replay101009&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

On Friday night, a bad call might have cost the Minnesota Twins a chance to beat the New York Yankees on the road in their American League Division Series. In the 11th inning of Game 2, Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer(notes) sliced a ball down the left-field line that not only glanced off Melky Cabrera’s(notes) glove in fair territory but also bounced at least 6 inches inside the line and then into the stands for what should’ve been a ground-rule double. Umpire Phil Cuzzi, standing 10 feet away, called it foul. And even though Mauer singled and the Twins managed to load the bases with no outs, they didn’t score, and the Yankees won 4-3 on a Mark Teixeira(notes) home run later that inning.

Game 2 was epic. Especially if you're a Dodgers fan. What a night that was!

But onto Gm 3 and while I was hoping it would be Garland starting, Padilla has been pitching really well in his few starts for the Dodgers, so no gripes I suppose.

Hoping for the best, and would love a sweep considering Billingsley is up in Gm 4 and he hasn't had a win in who knows how long. The last win decision I remember, coincidentally, was his W against these very same Cardinals, but I'm assuming (hoping) he's had a win somewhere from then to now.

Oh, and it seems Gm 3 of the Phillies/Rockies has been postponed to Sunday? The weather conditions must be pretty bad then. I was really looking forward to watching Martinez pitch in the snow

Angels and Yankees is the best possible series to come out from the AL, and we won't be subjected to 5 hour baseball games that would have been the Sox Yanks.

Good for the Dodgers. Once they got by the two headed monster that was Carpenter and Wainwright it was over. I'm excited for a rematch between the Phillies and Dodgers (one more inning to go).

Picks?

I think the Angels starting rotation is underrated (man did I call weaver with an 8 inning shut down earlier or what?) But... the Yankee bats are just so strong. The order seems to be unstoppable through nine innings and I just don't believe in the Angel bullpen to hold leads late. On the other hand, Sabathia looks good, and Chamberlain+Hughes+Rivera means the games are only 6 innings long. I am really looking forward to the a-rod / guerrero matchup, since they both have awoken from their post-season nightmares (maybe too early for guerrero).

I see it going 7, with the Yankees taking it.

On the other hand, I think the Phillies are the battle-hardened team in the NL. I like Lee to be dominant and their lefty lineup is just scary. I am not sure if LA can compete order wise unless Ramirez comes up huge. Granted, I don't know as much about the NL, but watching the playoffs I like the Phillies chances.

I'm going with the Dodgers to win it all this year. Don't really have anything to back that up other than a gut call though. It would be hilarious to see Torre winning the World Series again 2 years after the Yankees canned him. Hint: Joe Torre was not your problem that year, George.

Mostly I'm just sitting on the sidelines waiting for next year after the Braves late season charge against the Rockies came up short. I want the 90s back, dammit. Maybe next year... they almost made it this year, and have been getting a little better every year lately.

This whole "teams going years w/o winning the world series and suddenly looking dominant" thing that the Sox and the Phillies have gone through reminds me of this:
Post match Samsung van, driving home.

Jangbi: (sad) I don't understand, I did everything you said.
Stork: You did fine.
Jangbi: But... I lost.
Stork: It's all going according to plan, just three or four more finals losses!

Just 3 or 4 dozen seasons, cubs fans.

great game full of clutch pitching, great strategy by the managers, A-Rod again, and a buttload of errors.

it was fun though. Yanks got it this year ez.

edit: Also, im excited for Weaver vs Pettitte. That should be a good one.

11-0 The Dodgers could do nothing against Lee at all. With the next two in Philly they need to wake up their lineup or this will be 4-1 with a lucky 8th inning win only.

Angels escape. Anyone see the Abreu base running mistake in the 10th? Absolutely ridiculous with nobody out. He has to be so happy that they won otherwise he would be a huge goat.

I missed the yankees vs angels game. I forgot it was earlier(for me at least) since they moved back to LA. And I dont like to watch the replay of a game that the team I am supporting loses. TT. I hope the yanks win at least 1 game in LA, we all know they'd win at home.

That's why you never say never. That was an amazing finish. Two close playoff games in a day. Angels beat the Yankees in a squeaker, Phillies beat the Dodgers with a GW hit by Rollins.

They have so many lefties, it is going to be tough. Can you believe the mental mistakes in the AL series though? That thing at third with Posada and Cano was ridiculous.

haha yea, it was like both Cano and Posada looked at each other and went "Durrrr??" *brains switch off*. Pretty good luck that the ump also lost his brain, and says in the post game interview that he doesn't trust replays (referring to the Swisher call).

I couldn't agree more. If that is the match up there is no way I'd be able to watch. I love the World Series, so much passion and drama. If that happens I'll probably find an alternative activity to do. It would probably be restarting Dune 2000 again for the millionth time.

Umpires being changed apparently:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-worldseries-umpireswitch&prov=ap&type=lgns

NEW YORK (AP)—Stung by a rash of blown calls in the playoffs, Major League Baseball is breaking tradition and sticking with only experienced umpires for the World Series.

Yeah... until their pen blows the game. :O

I can't remember the last time the Yankee bullpen was substantially better than the opposing team's in the playoffs... like 2002? Something like that. It's been a loooong time. Thank you Brian Fuentes for giving me hope, when there should be none (among others).

Ugh, why did Girardi bring out Burnett again and then put in Marte? JUST PUT IN HUGHES TO BEGIN WITH. Seriously.

I don't get Girardi's decision making... Burnett is pretty sketchy by the 7th inning most of the time. There's no reason to not just pull him, even if he cries about it. Using Marte at all is always sketchy. Bases empty, I feel like Hughes gets through the bottom of that order easily.

Wow, I can't believe they walked the tying run on base. That's pretty risky... I know ARod has been crushing, but if Matsui (and now Cano) gets a home run, the series is over. I guess this is Mike Scioscia's way of saying he doesn't trust the Angel's bullpen in extras.

I thought it was pretty low the way the Yankees stalled for Mariano Rivera. The pitcher before that waited 3 minutes without throwing a single pitch. Truly disgusting.

In the NFL this is a delay of game. In baseball, this is acceptable behavior. This needs to change. Three minutes without throwing a pitch shouldn't go unpunished. The MLB really needs to force pitchers to actually pitch the ball instead of stalling for relief. It shouldn't matter if all teams do it, it's bad for the sport.

Amazing AB by Vlad - he racked up the pitch count on Rivera, got on base, and drove in the runner on 2nd. Rivera is now going to be well past 20 pitches and still has to go in for the 9th.

Or the Jets?

I really thought Yankees would now easily lose the series when they lost in the first game. I was pretty sure Burnett would self-distruct in game 2. Im glad I was wrong... game isnt over yet though, 3 more outs for mariano, and most of the time thats a sure thing.

Yeah that was pretty unreal. I mean... no sliders for four batters in a row? Pretty easy to sit on his fastball if you know it is the only thing coming. A-Rod pulled that ball so hard he had to know it was coming.

Phillies reveal they had no plan for covering third while the shift was on:
http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/20091102_Yankees_stun_Phillies_in_Game_4.html

no one would say exactly which Phillie should have covered the base.

"It's the catcher or pitcher," said manager Charlie Manuel. "Evidently, there was some miscommunication there. . . . Usually the catcher tries to get down there."

Said Lidge: "To be honest, that's not really something you go over a lot. I don't know who is supposed to cover on that."

Neither did Feliz. "That's a play, we never got anybody to say, 'OK, you've got to go out there, you've got to go here.' "

WTF, how can you be so unprepared this isn't little league!!

yea that's brutal ><

this game is nice though, lee's pitch count is getting a bit high, i think manuel has to consider pulling him if he wants him to be available for a game 7 relief appearance

I still like the phillies chances against pettite on 3 days rest
plus, the phillies have shown that the yankees pen is pretty weak, scattered runs against a bunch of relievers, better hope pettite goes 7 or you're in trouble

Yeah, my only fear is Mariano Rivera. The Phils still have no answer for that guy.

Fixed that for you. Yeah I don't like Pettitte on three days rest at all, but can you honestly say Martinez can bring another 6-7 strong innings? I say the chances of that are 50-50, and then the Yankees can feast on the bullpen for 3 innings. I think Pettitte has the heart that Burnett will never have.

Nice SI article about Pedro:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/ben_reiter/11/04/pedro.game6/index.html

But Martinez, as his comportment throughout this series has shown us, is in a different place than any of his teammates. His induction into the Hall of Fame is already assured, but he knows that even when he travels to Cooperstown five years after his retirement to be feted for a weekend, things just won't be the same as they are now, and never will be again. He is not raging against the dying of the light. He is laughing at it. He is seizing it. He is committing every bit of it to memory.

Sounds a lot looser than he used to be in Boston; good sign for the Phillies?

fox sports keys to victory for both teams

phillies: you've gotta be kidding me right? (tim mccarver says "theyve gotta win to win!")
yankees: 27 for 27 for 27 (27 outs to win the 27th championship)

what the fuck are these people paid for? those are the keys to victory? WIN AND GET 27 OUTS?

argh. joe buck and tim mccarver :[

Agreed. After a long season, when I'm forced to listen to them in the post-season Buck and McCarver make me appreciate my home-town commentators even more. McCarver especially.

edit: Pedro puts one right over the plate and Matsui murders it.

I'll take Tim and Joe over these commentators I am listening to. "Vlad asks if Pedro's performance is critical to this Series? I'd say so [insert laugh]." This is in the 6th inning. Thanks guys, you make Madden look like insightful.

Good game!
Venture Capital is better off spent on lottery tickets rather than investing in E-Sports; you'll get a far better return. The difference is simple: Koreans are tryharding at the game, foreigners are tryharding in real-life.
