Would you really call Beckett an excellent pitcher in the second half of the season though? He seems really vulnerable to the long ball lately. I think he is a post-season kind of guy, so I think he will come through, but he didn't inspire a lot of confidence after the All-Star break with me. Agreed on Weaver, I just see him as so streaky.

It kind of depends on if you believe that HR/FB (home runs per fly ball) is a controllable skill by the pitcher. Obviously, a pitcher who is incapable of pitching in the majors will run a noticeably high mark, but for normal pitchers across the spectrum the rate tends to regress towards 11% or so. For the season, he's at just over 12%, which is a little high, but not off the charts. It's definitely spiked in the second half, mostly attributed I think to a game against the Yanks in which he gave up 5HR. That'll skew the results pretty heavily. However, to finish out the season, he allowed exactly 1HR in his final five starts. That's also unlikely to continue. I guess what I'm saying is that no, I don't think he's been particularly homer prone or much worse in the second half than he was in the first; he was likely just a bit more unlucky. He still ran incredibly solid K/BB ratios as well as solid GB/FB ratios. If I were a betting man--and to some degree I am--my money would be on Beckett for this game.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-replay101009&prov=yhoo&type=lgns On Friday night, a bad call might have cost the Minnesota Twins a chance to beat the New York Yankees on the road in their American League Division Series. In the 11th inning of Game 2, Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer(notes) sliced a ball down the left-field line that not only glanced off Melky Cabrera’s(notes) glove in fair territory but also bounced at least 6 inches inside the line and then into the stands for what should’ve been a ground-rule double. Umpire Phil Cuzzi, standing 10 feet away, called it foul. And even though Mauer singled and the Twins managed to load the bases with no outs, they didn’t score, and the Yankees won 4-3 on a Mark Teixeira(notes) home run later that inning.

![]() Game 2 was epic. Especially if you're a Dodgers fan. What a night that was! But onto Gm 3 and while I was hoping it would be Garland starting, Padilla has been pitching really well in his few starts for the Dodgers, so no gripes I suppose. Hoping for the best, and would love a sweep considering Billingsley is up in Gm 4 and he hasn't had a win in who knows how long. The last win decision I remember, coincidentally, was his W against these very same Cardinals, but I'm assuming (hoping) he's had a win somewhere from then to now. Oh, and it seems Gm 3 of the Phillies/Rockies has been postponed to Sunday? The weather conditions must be pretty bad then. I was really looking forward to watching Martinez pitch in the snow ![]()

I think the Angels starting rotation is underrated (man did I call weaver with an 8 inning shut down earlier or what?) But... the Yankee bats are just so strong. The order seems to be unstoppable through nine innings and I just don't believe in the Angel bullpen to hold leads late. On the other hand, Sabathia looks good, and Chamberlain+Hughes+Rivera means the games are only 6 innings long. I am really looking forward to the a-rod / guerrero matchup, since they both have awoken from their post-season nightmares (maybe too early for guerrero). I see it going 7, with the Yankees taking it. On the other hand, I think the Phillies are the battle-hardened team in the NL. I like Lee to be dominant and their lefty lineup is just scary. I am not sure if LA can compete order wise unless Ramirez comes up huge. Granted, I don't know as much about the NL, but watching the playoffs I like the Phillies chances.

I don't get Girardi's decision making... Burnett is pretty sketchy by the 7th inning most of the time. There's no reason to not just pull him, even if he cries about it. Using Marte at all is always sketchy. Bases empty, I feel like Hughes gets through the bottom of that order easily.

plus, the phillies have shown that the yankees pen is pretty weak, scattered runs against a bunch of relievers, better hope pettite goes 7 or you're in trouble

Nobody still have no answer for that guy. Fixed that for you. Yeah I don't like Pettitte on three days rest at all, but can you honestly say Martinez can bring another 6-7 strong innings? I say the chances of that are 50-50, and then the Yankees can feast on the bullpen for 3 innings. I think Pettitte has the heart that Burnett will never have.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/ben_reiter/11/04/pedro.game6/index.html But Martinez, as his comportment throughout this series has shown us, is in a different place than any of his teammates. His induction into the Hall of Fame is already assured, but he knows that even when he travels to Cooperstown five years after his retirement to be feted for a weekend, things just won't be the same as they are now, and never will be again. He is not raging against the dying of the light. He is laughing at it. He is seizing it. He is committing every bit of it to memory. Sounds a lot looser than he used to be in Boston; good sign for the Phillies?

phillies: you've gotta be kidding me right? (tim mccarver says "theyve gotta win to win!") yankees: 27 for 27 for 27 (27 outs to win the 27th championship) what the fuck are these people paid for? those are the keys to victory? WIN AND GET 27 OUTS? argh. joe buck and tim mccarver :[

Espn's tracker gives the Philles a 3% chance but that 3% doesn't take Mariano Rivera into account. Goddamn.
