God of the Battlefield: Part 2 - Page 16

Read Part 1

Before we released God of the Battlefield: Part 1, we wondered if it was a wise decision. While no one could question the quality of the article Ver had written, we had to consider the risk of glorifying one of the most loathsome individuals in e-Sports history by releasing an article focused on only his positive aspects.

Thankfully, most of our readers reacted to Part 1 in an intelligent, discerning manner, and were capable of keeping Savior's in-game brilliance in perspective with his out-of-game crimes. While match-fixing still hurts Brood War to this day, and some shameless Savior apologists remain, we believe the majority of our readers are mature enough to appreciate Ver's work in in an appropriate way.

During 2006-2007, Ma Jae Yoon (aka Savior) was the best Brood War player in the world. Not only did he win multiple championships, but he dominated his opposition in a way that had never been seen for the Zerg race. His play captivated the hearts of countless fans, and even the staunchest critics were forced to admit that he was one of the greatest of all time.

His career began on a sharp decline in March 2007, after a loss to Kim Taek Yong (Bisu) in the MSL Final. Though he would retain the loyalty and support of many fans - and occasionally show them flashes of his past brilliance - he would never challenge for a title again.

In 2010, Savior was implicated in one of the most devastating events in e-Sports history, the pro-gamer match fixing scandal. Nearly a dozen progamers had received bribes to intentionally lose their matches, which were bet upon by a handful of shady parties on illegal e-Sports gambling websites. Korean courts found Savior guilty of being a broker, a middle-man between the gamblers and the bribed progamers, though it is suspected that he may have been more directly involved as well.

Savior was sentenced to one year in prison (this sentence has been suspended for 2 years; sentencing occurred in May 2010). Furthermore, all of the progamers implicated were given life-time competition bans by KeSPA (the governing body for BW e-Sports in Korea). GomTV has stated that the banned players are also barred from competing in their StarCraft II leagues.

Though Savior seriously undermined the institution of e-Sports through his despicable crimes, it is possible to separate his faults as a human being from his accomplishments as a player. Though he was rightfully banned from playing the game that brought him fame and fortune, it is undeniable that he was one of the most brilliant RTS players in history, and that he left a significant, lasting mark on the way the Brood War is played.

Damn.

Even as a Revolutionist fan, I can't do anything but respect Savior's game. It's tragic, what he did after, but I'd like to think that Oov's analysis of him was correct: he was a kid who was too good at a game, who began to lose sight of PLAYING it and instead was lured into profiting from it.

It's unfortunate that he won't be allowed to play SC2. Bisu needs somebody he can beat.

If I count correctly, the second titles graph is incorrect. It shows 5 titles for Protoss while there were 6:
3 MSLs for Bisu
1 OSL for Stork
2 OSLs for JangBi.

I suspect the article was created before last (BW) OSL final...?

In ZvT, the most common Zerg openings up until Savior were with lurkers, usually from 2 hatcheries. Many players made large numbers of zerglings early game to threaten the Terran or to keep themselves safe. Mutalisks were frequently used but they were often delayed. Zerg usually only felt safe getting mutalisks after first obtaining lurkers.

That's not a bad description of July's zvt circa 2004, but it's not how most people played the matchup.

For years, the standard zvt looked more like this:

Amazing article throughout. It makes a lot of sense (in hindsight) that playing Terran would make someone good at figuring out ways to defeat Terrans, but given the mechanical complexity of BW, it's hard to imagine that a progamer would think that playing Terran was a better use of his time than practicing his Zerg mechanics. I love that, even as a pro, he still could play the game for fun (as Terran) and that what started as essentially goofing around became a key ingredient in his success.
Make more anything.

To all those people who moan about how awesome it would be if Savior went to SCII:

1. Why are you assuming that he would even want to play SCII?
2. What makes you think that SCII has the same depth of play that such innovation could be possible?

Seriously though, as much as I read this article and want to believe that such innovation could happen in SCII I just don't see it happening at all...Not to mention the fact that it already happened!

To elaborate a bit:

I'm saying two things here. One is that SCII lacks the depth of BW, so such levels of innovation just won't be possible. The other is that SCII progamers already carry 10 or so years of experience with them, meaning that such a drastic innovation will very likely not happen again...

Also just because sAviOr was god in Brood War doesn't necessarily translate into godhood in SC2.

It generally does (if he was the same age), his skillset would really favour a less mechanically demanding (but very similar) RTS.
