I stumbled upon this song again the other day. It brings back such joyous emotions and nostalgia of the greatest series of Starcraft 2 played yet, the initial euphoria as an MMA fan as your hero took the series to match point early, and your growing horror as DRG roused the fires of his competitive spirit and fought with everything he had, and forced it to an ace match. The absolute excitement and anxiety I had as a viewer in the final game was precedented, as the two titans of eSports battled each other back and forth over the plateaus of Shakuras, MMA pushing the ridges with his siege tanks and employing his brilliant drop play, while DRG countered with magnificent drop defense and his ultralisks broke through the center of MMA's line like the great mumakil of Harad. The final deathball push by DRG literally had me on the edge of my seat, but I felt as if I were on the edge of bottomless cliff about to fall. As broodlings and zerglings swarmed the production of MMA, my heart sank into despair, but out of this despair hope came in the form of 2 tanks in a medivac. Against all odds and against all expectations, they crossed the map on their hail-mary mission and took out the last mining base of DRG. Thus as DRG sieged the base of MMA and strangled the production, MMA cut off the last economy of the Zerg swarm. It wasn't the cleaniest game ever played, but that did not matter to me. It was two of the best players in the world trading blow for blow, both dealing grievious damage to each other that would have destroyed any other player. What is utmost joy? The sight of an entire team rushing the stage after sitting for hours in torturous anxiety, the release of all that nervous energy into a jubilous, impromptu celebration onstage. The sight of MMA's mother as she watched her son become champion. The sight of the Slayers team, a team considered at the beginning of 2011 nothing more than a rag-tag band of Boxer's practice partners, but defied expectations to win back-to-back GSTLs and dominate Code S, rally around their captain and ace. The sight of the Emperor implicitly passing the torch on to his worthy heir and successor, perhaps seeing a younger version of himself in MMA, the Boxer who became the hope of the Terran race and won the OSL ten years earlier against all the odds. This song will forever remind me of this happy day, and all of the intense emotions of that finals, and everytime I listen, I travel back to December 17, 2011, the day MMA won the Blizzard Cup. My fellow MMA fans, never forget that day. Moments like these are why I'm an MMA fan and a Slayers fan. | ||
