the apology is stupid because what are they really apologising for, their own ignorance? netizens get nothing out of an apology, but that said, seolhyun, jimin and the agency overall really fked up here. like someone said, its like an american not knowing who the fuck abraham lincoln is. seolhyun and jimin arent some 12 yr olds who dunno wtf theyre talking about. theyre young adults who apparently thought their visuals would carry them through life and their ignorance would be forgiven. this is some next level stupidity. i mean its understandable that some americans may not know exactly what abraham lincoln did that made him such a figure in american history, but at the very least theyd recognise the name. seolhyun and jimin literally hadnt even heard of the name before, which is ludicrous. sadly though, them being carried through life thing for their visuals is probably the reality anyway
Turning the situation around, we'd definitely be making fun of an American pop star not knowing common historical figures. It'd just become a gag on the late night shows and sketchy comedies, but probably no apology related to it.
I think oh my girl have about one more comeback before Arin gets modelling duties and hopefully Binnie gets forced into aciting. I would watch the shit out of her in your bog standard kdrama.
Bini has had some acting under her belt before OhMyGirl. They were bit parts though, can't really emphasis bit hard enough, on Sungkyunwan Scandal and a family story re-enactment series Oh My God. Pretty much there for reaction shots, but given that she was street scouted it makes sense.
The comparison to someone as iconic as Abe Lincoln seems a bit unfair. I've been in Korea 5 years and have never heard of this freedom fighter/assassin. Yi Sun-sin, King Sejong, Park Jong Hee are the 3 big ones I regularly hear about or see. 100% of the population memorizing the names of historical figures doesn't occur anywhere outside of dictatorships and knowing them isn't necessarily an indication of intelligence imo, just interests.
That said, my wife knew both and said Jimin and Seolhyun are "ridiculously stupid" for not knowing either the man or the Japanese general.
