(Or it might just be a PR article but i give it the benefit of the doubt) ...also those rookie groups that arent from big labels seem to have it bad

It very much is just PR, they've always been trashy mode right from the debut or second promotion. Was a slight bit of noise about their teaser having emphasis on a member's skirt physics leading to visible safety pantsu. Followed by some articles about how they felt uncomfortable about the mv being shot in such a manner. And their debut label might not have been the big three, but it had a biit of brand recognition due to Shinhwa's Eric being part of the company and being the 'creative' head behind Stellar, until he fucked right off. Which you can't blame him for, given that the creation of the group stemmed from a bet between him and Hyori, whose response was Spica.

Theres not much to go from there boy groups mainly come down to how good the company is at managing them from what ive seen. boy groups tend to have much stronger (loyal?) fan bases even from earlier on, so they just use that as a foundation each time they release a song or album. the only problem is the company has to get them mainstream exposure through variety shows and that all depends on how good the company is. the difference between this and a girl group is that a girl group needs recognition first to be cast in a variety show, whereas boy groups get the recognition after. therefore the girl groups' company doesnt necessarily have to be as good at managing them because they get offers anyway. this is what ive noticed at least and its what ive heard from people within the industry and by managing i mean 'be connected/rich etc'. because we all know actually managing groups well doesnt do shit for them, its all about the connections and money

but success in kpop is a fickle thing and quite random at times, exid had really good stuff, no one cared, than came a fancam and everybody was a fan all along.

Kpop is just such an over saturated market it's unreal. A lot of female fans buys albums from female groups though. Just like there are male fans who buy albums from male groups, But yes I agree it's way oversatured, and a lot of groups has to disband soon after debuting. I just hope it isn't the case for The Ark because their debut song was so good. And they still haven't released anything else yet which is strange since they need to ride the success they had.. Should at least have released a mini album by now ._.
