To ensure this thread won't be closed, you must adhere to several a number of simple rules;
  • Please use spoilers when quoting a post with pictures and/or videos.
  • When posting large quantities of media (pictures or videos), please begin spoilering after the first piece. Grouping related videos in the same spoilers & labeling is recommended.
  • No reposting of old material unless justified
  • Posting any material with little or no relevent discussion accompanying it
  • No passion-induced flaming of each other because 'x said y sucked' etc.
  • Keep the expression hate of music individuals/groups to a minimal level
  • No 'pagetopping' in any form whatsoever, as it constitutes spam equal to posts similar to 'first'.
  • No vulgar fan fics or wet dream stories. It is creepy, weird, and it dehumanizes the people who you are here to celebrate/discuss.
  • Normal posting standards that you find throughout the rest of the site still apply and will be enforced more strictly from here forward (2012/03/11)

Due to the poor nature of this thread in the past, temporary two-day bans will occur more than often if people slip up.

The reaction is not at all overblown, it's just the truth. Tablo even admitted that they were selling out and did a lot of things people told them not to do. The name of the album is 99 because it's made for 99% of the listeners and not the 1% who actually want good music.

source klogg? I feel the same way as craton everybody here was just basically waiting to make the OMFG Sellouts and epik shit comments.

it has some good and some bad songs, just like every other album out there for me.

Haven't even listened to the whole album because I'm not really a fan in the first place and the lead track was genuinely crap. I don't care if they "sold out", I listen to manufactured candy ass girl group music, but if it sounds shit I will say so without caring if anyone thinks I'm bandwagoning.

Out of curiosity, why is it that the rest of you got into kpop and not jpop? Was it mostly because of bw/sc2? I watched my first anime/manga and knew lots about Japan long, long before I ever laid eyes on jessica. When I think about it I cant understand why kpop and Korean culture sucked me into oblivion while jpop and Japanese culture remained a far away novelty

Pretty much. Although I have begun reading manga/watching anime a year before I started watching BW, thanks to Craton I got sucked into the highly addicting kpop/bw mix very fast. So I never got to listen to any other x-pop beside kpop. And once you're hooked onto one variety, that's it for life :D

I will however defend anime OSTs (at least most of them), because they are often very good. With the exception of opening/ending themes, I usually hate them to the point of avoiding them like the plague ^_^.

As per the EpikHigh debacle, I like two songs which is slightly less than their other releases. I wouldn't say it's the end of the world nor ignore them forever. If their next album is again 'mediocre' (mediocre for them, great for any other band), then I can speculate.

Also, while I'm at it, massive thank you to LosingID8 for posting your top #30, I love discovering more music and that Clazziquai album is just spectacular. Haven't been this happy for a long time <3

I thought the reaction was that Epik High's new albums was okay, but was not up to snuff. I think most of the hate was derived out of the whole "selling out" part, not the actual dislike for the songs.
Don't Hate Me was alright, I liked it, but was it the caliber of stuff that I was expecting from Epik High? Nope.

The reaction is vastly overblown because you all set yourself up for the "OH GOD THEY'RE SELLING OUT" bullshit. Congratulations on your self-fulfilling prophecy. You hate it because you expected to before it ever came out and the second you heard one song you didn't like you immediately used it to affirm your pre-conceived belief.

The album, like every other album on the planet had its good songs, its bad songs, and its mediocre songs. It had songs that were like many of the past songs and songs that weren't.

Tough shit that you don't like it because it isn't identical to their first album from 9 years ago. Neither were any of their other albums.

Learn to see past your own internal biases and you'll find there are good songs on the album.

craton's talking that real shit right now. album was released under yg ent. kmd = yg haters (minus big bang shit). the hate and disappointment here was expected long before the album was even released.

You keep saying that we're YG haters. I don't get why you think that. We have people who like 2ne1. A lot of us liked GD's That XX. Nearly all of us loved Psy. I personally love se7en and gummy too.

Only cantonese music I listen to nowadays is FAMA and MCJin :o Basically for the lyrics and to keep up with their mindset.

German language is better than Dutch at least, the 2 languages I speak on daily basis are pretty ugly ^^ But to be really honest, I watched Ongbak recently and watched Saigon Jokers interview, fuck Thai and Vietnamese language are pretty damned ugly to listen to... Japanese is nice to listen to because of their ways of speaking it, Korean has some throat sounds but it's still nice to listen to.

For me the hate isn't because they sold out, people sell out so what? For me I'm just disappointed that one of my favorite groups is now making music that I don't like. And I'm sure a lot of long time Epik High fans will agree that what made Epik High great was their uniqueness and now they just sound like just another kpop group.
I didn't come to play..I came to win. Now lets play.

YG are certainly preferable to SM. Seem to care a lot more about music than looks. Just look at their roster. A midget boyband, PSY, 2ne1 not exactly a "visual" group, and if you've caught a glimpse of those SuPearl girls they are about to debut, well....

I would like to know the source of this too. I never heard Tablo say anything like this and he seemed happier saying he was able to have the freedom he wanted and had fun making the album. After hearing the songs a lot more now I can say some reactions are overblown even tho the quality is not where I wanted it to be but it's still acceptable and enjoyable.

Not at all. When they released "It's Cold" I thought the album was gonna be good, then they released don't hate me along with the rest of the album and I disliked it.

They allegedly said that it was 99 because thy were looking to appeal to the 99% of the fans, the 1% is not specified as anything.
To be honest I wouldn't take anything that has come from this as a genuine representation of his mood, not long ago he was somewhat making fun of G-dragon's crayon lyrics but his music now is closer to it than it is to the old Epik high.

'According to YG Entertainment’s official Facebook, the Epik High members named the album ’99′ for a
number of reasons: their love of the number “9″, the 9 songs in the album (plus one short track),
and the aim to “[embrace] the meaning of music” for 99% of people, not the top 1%.'

That's the excerpt that is being quoted

Kpop has generally been more catchy than Jpop for me, plus a lot of Jpop idols are fucking weird (link to pon pon here). Korean culture doesn't feel nearly as wtf insane as Japanese does most of the time, though that's also enjoyable from time to time.

I really get into some parts of Japanese culture, being a (mainly RPG) gamer and an anime and manga fan, of course, aside from Kpop and eSports there's really not much about Korea that draws me.

I think that means it's supposed to be something the bottom 99% can relate to, and it's non-elitist music. I dunno about it meaning it's meant to exclude their old fans.

Maybe it's because Don't Hate Me sounds like a recycled Big Bang song.
