I don't think the US is taking him seriously at this point. Even his new manager, on the Ryan Seacrest interview, compared it to this song. A one hit wonder and the guy was never heard from again.

I might be reaching here, but I also would hate to think that Ellen was correlating PSY with the laugh acts that shows like American Idol and X-factor have on the first few episodes. The silly people with no talent who make it big because people think they are funny. At least Simon called PSY brilliant which is high praise coming from him.

At the very least PSY has given kpop more exposure and maybe this foot in the door gives him a chance to showcase all his talent in the future. Fingers crossed.

Gangnam Style isn't going to suddenly make everyone listen to Korean language music. It's the Macarena, plain and simple. Just look how everyone wants him to teach the dance and all that, no matter where he goes. They don't care about PSY, they care about the 'horse dance'.

The positive thing is that PSY is promoting his culture. I thought it was really interesting how he and Ryan Seacrest talked about the differences between Western and Korean age on his show. PSY spoke Korean on the VMAs. It's stuff like this that is important too I think. PSY is spreading knowledge and awareness of Korea, which is pretty cool. Is the mainstream public gonna be all 'Kpop and kimchi yeeeeeah!' after this? Of course not, but at least some people are more aware of Korea outside of Samsung and Hyundai. That's a win.

Meanwhile, Korean music fans will continue listening to Korean music, some new people who found out about it through Gangnam Style will join in, and most people will of course not listen to anything but English language music. And that's ok.

i honestly don't think psy is helping kpop. I mean psy's music =/= kpop as we know it. Kpop is generally just girl groups with sexy choreo and boy groups with cool looking moves. I mean most people in america didn't give 2 shits about snsd and wondergirls (people outside their fanbase) and psy making it big is not gonna change people's minds about them unless they do something like psy or something else that would go viral in youtube.

I think we all agree that PSY isn't going to be spreading kpop, but the real question is, do you want kpop to go mainstream outside of Korea? And if so, do you want it in English, but done in kpop style? or just the way kpop is now, just more popular?

no, you're making it worse.

I don't care and don't think korea will go mainstream outside of korea (i.e in the western areas). I always believed kpop's success was limited to asia and that it's success has more to do with the fact that it is korean.

Has anyone in here introduced kpop to some friends irl that voiced their opinion on it? I haven't done this, the only friend I have that listens to kpop already is korean etc so I didn't introduce it to her, but it would be fun to know what the general opinion about kpop would be around western people. My guess would be that the guys would call all the boy bands gay because that is what they do to to every male pop artist here in the west already even if most of them just look and act like your typical western guy anyway. The rest I don't know. ^^~

I introduced it to my korean/veit friend, who's completely whitewashed by the way, (dad full Korean but adopted into states at birth so no actual Korean cult in him); he listens to vocaloids and shit and he thought it was ok, at the very least he lets me blast it while were LANing together.

Most of them don't care because they can't understand it, thus it is unappealing to them. A few enjoy dem legz and of course the butts but that's about it..

The general rule, about music is, whoevers driving always chooses the music. So usually, if I'm driving, kpop is gunna be played in my car, my friends don't seem to mind it. They do know some of the more popular western exposed ones like, gee, bubblepop, gangnam style, etc etc. As far as MV goes, I show a couple of them to my friends that I know are into Asian girls, for dem visuals.

Sica was right down the bottom for me initially (Gee days), but she's near the top nowadays.
Since the start for me (Gee), Seohyun up, Sica up, Hyoyeon up, Sooyoung still low, Yoona down, Taeyon, Tippany and Yuri the same, Sunny down.
