and does these fanboy/fangirl photographers carry some sort of banner ? why do they always end up with a few photographs of the girls staring straight into the camera/wave/wink of some sorts.

It might look like they're winking or waving directly at the camera. However, often this is not the case. It's just a case of good angles and them paying attention to the crowd. As anyone who has been up on stage will tell you it's usually hard to see the audience at all depending upon the conditions.
Yes, some photographers are lucky enough to get direct attention, but no one carries banners or anything. That's impossible to do if you're holding a dslr - you need both hands to operate it correctly.
