That's quite an odd looking cartoon.

If by odd you mean awesome you'd be correct.

lol, wut?

This avatar thing has the potential to be really cool. The thing is, we know so little about it that it's difficult to say much of anything. If it does make you feel like you're on an alien world with blue-dappled giants and hot alien chicks then it's sold me.

What's the idea of discussing movies that were not published yet? It's stupid. Nowadays all movies are about the smart marketing and the hype. Good cinematography is not important. If the OP didnt have 500 posts, Id think that he is some "web-marketer" who makes discussions in order to hype the movie (yes, they do it!). I have no idea if the movie will be good, because I havent seen it; I would be glad if someone who has seen it would comment on it; I dont need to read the interview with the director to learn that the movie will be "awesome". Has any director ever say that their movie would be crappy? Apart from that Bill Cosby movie in the 1980s...

Seems like all this hype is just over the special effects, cuz the plot on wiki isn't anything groundbreaking. If so, meh....

why'd you just reiterate the OP?

as others have said, it's mainly the new technology creating new possibilities. and if someone asked "what's the coolest way to take advantage of this tech?" the answer would involve a capable director like Cameron and a cool world like in avatar. and now all the hype is rolling in as people preview the results so far and only have good things to say about it.

Its not the cartoon movie. The cartoon movie will be named The Last Airbender. This is a totally different movie.

This movie, just like every other movie released in the last 5 years that was supposed to be groundbreaking, will suck. Its sole hype is that it looks good, which it will for about 5 minutes. Remember Watchmen? A huge sales boom the first weekend, then nobody went back to see it again?

Sorry, I'm just too cynical after living through this hype-letdown cycle so many times. The Dark Knight being the only exception :D
The dangers of poor typing skills can be evinced by the dire parable about the hungry boy who accidentally ate a luscious red Yamato, and promptly died.

First of all, don't feed the trolls. Everyone knows this has nothing to do with the Nickelodeon Avatar cartoon show.

I don't think you understand. How many people here saw Star Wars in May 1977 and remember how much of a big deal that was? It's not about applying technology in a new way or just making a 'good' movie, this is the first movie in perhaps a decade that has pioneered and invented new technologies solely for the purpose of improving the experience. Technological developments will catapult the industry ahead.

Major individuals in the motion picture industry are saying this will be that big of a deal. People with no real financial motivation for doing so are saying this movie will be a big deal. I'm pretty sure this movie is going to be a big deal.

I personally don't see how it can live up to hype like that.

And it's not silly, I didn't watch much of it but it seemed to have a better storyline than 90% of the crap they show in TV nowadays.

This. The movie might end up being a flop, but the effect this movie will have on the industry will be huge.

How would it flop if its going change the industry?
That's pretty contradictory.

Maybe a flop critically...like poor acting or story, but still introducing completely ground-breaking visuals.

There's so much hype because this is James Cameron's first "real movie" in 12 years, since he stopped playing submersible Steve Irwin. And James Cameron is a director who really knows cinema: He did the best Aliens ( Alien 2) he did the best Terminator (T2) and he also did The Abyss and True Lies which (despite the latter starring Arnold Scharwzenegger) were highly cinematic. And he's always been really good with technology.

And nowadays 3D is mainly just used as a gimmick, it hasn't found it's artistic purposes in cinema, and everyone looks to Avatar and to James Cameron to take cinema to the next level because it's the dawn of a new era. It's like someone using effectively Sound for the first time in cinema. So, yeah, that's why Avatar is hyped.
