The thing is, we know so little about it that it's difficult to say much of anything. If it does make you feel like you're on an alien world with blue-dappled giants and hot alien chicks then it's sold me.

Sorry, I'm just too cynical after living through this hype-letdown cycle so many times. The Dark Knight being the only exception :D

I don't think you understand. How many people here saw Star Wars in May 1977 and remember how much of a big deal that was? It's not about applying technology in a new way or just making a 'good' movie, this is the first movie in perhaps a decade that has pioneered and invented new technologies solely for the purpose of improving the experience. Technological developments will catapult the industry ahead. Major individuals in the motion picture industry are saying this will be that big of a deal. People with no real financial motivation for doing so are saying this movie will be a big deal. I'm pretty sure this movie is going to be a big deal. I personally don't see how it can live up to hype like that.

And it's not silly, I didn't watch much of it but it seemed to have a better storyline than 90% of the crap they show in TV nowadays.

Everyone knows this has nothing to do with the Nickelodeon Avatar cartoon show. I don't think you understand. And nowadays 3D is mainly just used as a gimmick, it hasn't found it's artistic purposes in cinema, and everyone looks to Avatar and to James Cameron to take cinema to the next level because it's the dawn of a new era. It's like someone using effectively Sound for the first time in cinema. So, yeah, that's why Avatar is hyped.
