If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

Screw Pokemon. It's GUNDAM time.

Edit: These subs suck. They don't even include a lot of the words.

They are subs for the Japanese audio track

Yeah, that's what I figured.

G Gundam is pretty cool though, gonna have to download that sometime. I think I actually liked the dub for that. Made it more entertaining somehow.

it's basically Gundam DBZ style

720p Gundam Unicorn?

If today is the DVD release date, I'm surprised, since the BDs were delayed till April.

Nope, 1080p

And this happened last time as well. The ripped BDs somehow showed up on torrent sites a week or two ahead of the release date.

I hate to ask this again, but: which subgroups are good? [UTW] I take it is good, Mazui apparently too, but are [O-L], [OZC] and [Tormaid] good?
As most(if not all?) of you I'm looking for as much bang for my buck as I can get: Good quality (720p mostly, 1080p not ideally) readable fonts and fluent, understandable translations with a small size.

I bookmarked this site when someone posted it before for comparing subgroups: http://www.ji-hi.net/
but the problem is, the site seems rather recent. They can't compare Full Metal Panic!, Code Geass, Ghost in the Shell, etc. etc.

Is there a site where I can compare or get a general idea which subgroup is good? Mostly for the older/better anime rather than your run-of-the-mill average ones of the past few seasons with a few exceptions.

So far I've been using torrents that seem to have the most uses and users, but is the most popular torrent always of the best/most efficient subgroup?

Kickass Anime (KAA) has decent subs for a lot of older shows. Another good, recent group is Static Subs (SS), and Eclipse was awesome until they stopped Underwater seems to be all right too.

myanimelist has user ratings for each fansub group that works on a series. However, whether or not their ratings are trustworthy is up for debate. It's better than nothing though.

KAA is indeed very good. And they're primarily a DVD rip group as well, IIRC. SS I wouldn't really call recent. They're generally good, but they're also really slow.

Eclipse used to be the fastest. They started slowing down around when Kaichou wa Maid Sama was airing - I clearly remember FFFpeeps being faster on almost every occasion.

Well i think i used Eclipse subs for Code Geass like 2 or 3 years ago. Who are horriblesubs? Are they a troll group that just steals from everyone?

Don't they just rip the subs from Crunchyroll? Anyway, they get things out hella fast, but in low quality. If you absolutely cannot wait any longer and don't care about quality, they're your first choice.

IIRC Horriblesubs gets stuff out usually in 720p but once in a while theres a 480p. They're quality isn't bad, but they're hella fast. 720p is decent enough, since im probably only going to watch it once anyways.

Horriblesubs and Crunchysubs aren't troll groups, although what they do is kinda grey legally. They OCR the subs from Crunchyroll which is why their release is always the fastest. They're what I use exclusively for series which I know are crap, but want to watch anyways.

Edit: I do believe I've seen 360p videos from them before. For DenYuuDen, I think?

My first choice is always Crunchyroll itself, as it's cheap, has decent 720p, and I'm kind of an idealist in wanting some of my money to go the animators, but also encourage more animes on Crunchyroll and better quality.
After that, I usually take whatever is offered in 720p, regardless of the subgroup. If there's an obvious mistake, I'll probably just notice it anyway.

I actually downloaded Gosick from them when it came out (UTW's subs weren't out for a few days). It was 480p shit. First and only time I ever use Horrible.

Anyway, just watched Angel Beats! 3. Another good episode. The fact that it isn't beloved (at least here) really concerns my outlook for the last ten eps. >.>

Edit: Gundam UC has been downloading for an hour. It's felt like a week.

tl;dr - it's having a computer read text which is in analog instead of digital form. For instance, there are programs that let you scan books and convert the scanned material into text. That's OCR.

Edit:
@Ferrose: The problem with Angel Beats is twofold:
First, the flip-flopping between comedy and drama happens far too quickly. It makes it difficult to care even when people "die". And to add to that, death is cheap when everyone just revives after a while.
Second, the story development is utter crap. This series would have benefited greatly from an additional 12 episodes.

Oh OCR seems pretty epic.

Angel Beats would have been better if they just sticked to one thing. 12 episodes isn't long enough for it to be switching around. Like Zombie, trying to do drama, granted it was done terrible, but it would have been better if they just stuck with the comedy throughout.

However though I found Angel Beats to be enjoyable (atleast the drama part)

As you watch more and more, you realize how much development of the plot/characters is missing. After you finish all 13 episodes, this feeling turns into irritation and you begin to blame the producers for fucking it up. Most of the people here blame it's length. 13 episodes is really not enough to explain everything, tie up loose ends and develop all the characters.
The characters are good, I find the setting enjoyable but the plot and it's execution seems lacking =(
The final ~4 episodes I think showcase just that. I won't spoil you, but the final episodes seem really stupidly rushed plotwise.

Yeah, like, Angel Beats! has everything to be God Tier. I guess I'll see for myself. And yeah, it is pretty weird that character "death" is a form of comedy. And there is a massive amont of teenage angst. Not that that's bad. But it is a heavy dose.

In addition, despite the fact that Angel Beats has a large cast, most of the characters don't even end up being plot relevant. You could remove half to three quarters of the cast and the story would still be the same. In the end, most characters only have one defining trait which differentiates them from the other characters. Contrast this to a show like Durarara, which, despite having a humongous cast, still managed to sneak some character development in for most of them.

Incidentally, Angel Beats and Canaan are the two reasons why I worry that Hanasaku Iroha might not be good. =/
