If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

Finished Nanoha the Movie.

Um.....it was good.

But.....wtf? So basically, she shoots this star destroying beam....that somehow doesn't kill Fate-chan.....and then she says "I'm sorry."

Am I the only one thinking that these murderous attempts are beyond the stage of apologizing to your opponent? I also felt Nanoha's voice got a bit too high pitched and her repeated use of "Fate-chan" and sighs and laughs were sort of awkwardly timed and weird.

Plot twist was good though. I'll give it that.

Defeat means friendship. It's just one of those things.

Damn you, I got caught in the spiral of tvtropes for a good 2 hours.

I think that fortifies MY point as much as it fortifies Southlight's...
No matter how good the story is, I'd always be distracted by how alien the characters look.

Enough about that, though. Can anyone recommend some good anime from the 80's to the late 90's? Preferably Movies or OVAs. Recently picked up Escaflowne, and I'm really enjoying how unadulterated its fantasy feel is.

Cowboy Bebop, though i've never watched <year 2000 animes

Yeah I watched that. Maybe I'll make a list of what I watched/am watching:

Series:
- Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Cowboy Bebop
- Escaflowne
- Macross

OVA:
- Top wo Nerae! (Gunbuster) <- everyone should watch
- Black Magic M-66
- Black Lion
- Appleseed

Movie:
- Ghost in the Shell
- Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
- Patlabor the Movie
- Appleseed
- Ghibli Movies

@Ferrose: I like series too.

Series:
- Outlaw Star
- Gundam Wing (Childhood nostalgia :D)
- Berserk
- Initial D

OVA:
- 3x3 eyes

Movie:
- Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
- Akira
- Blue Gender

Also, Death Note is hardly an intellectual anime, nor all that intelligent of one :/ I mean, it's more intelligent than most stuff, but that's a really low bar.

I guess I recommend Monster if you're looking for a similar anime that's more realistic. If you actually want an intelligent intellectual anime watch Serial Experiments Lain or something.

Edit - Wow, that Asuka fanart is absolutely amazing.

I usually like shorter anime series because they seem to have less filler and better stories.
Samurai Champloo and Fullmetal Alchemist: brotherhood are my favourites
aswell as Naruto up to episode 80 is great

Well it seems like anything not mainstream does not have fillers. IIRC

It's really a matter of how much source material is available when the anime gets green-lit more than anything else. Take Railgun for example: the level upper arc was pretty good, but then there was a crapton of filler because the manga hadn't finished the sisters arc. In comparison, LoGH had 10 episodes and had very little in terms of filler simply because the novels were done long before the anime ever came into existence.

I find it odd that you mentioned Samurai Champloo though. More than half the episodes didn't really contribute to the main storyline and were essentially filler.

Champloo is slice of life-like enough that it gets away with having episodes after episodes where the main story doesn't progress.

Yea champloo wasnt super plot involved, but the break dancing fight scenes made up for that.

I was more talking about FMAB. Theres not a lot of filler, although the story is a bit slow at times. A lot of story content in it and only 63 episodes. Definitely the most gripping anime ive watched, but I havent watched all that many.

Well, FMA:B is a special case. The original FMA anime (2003) basically followed the manga, up until the point where it caught up. After it caught up the the manga, it essentially went off in its own direction with German zeppelins bombing London in WWI and other lol material. FMA:B (2009) was however made to end at the very same time as the manga. Basically, since FMA:B never "caught up" to the manga until the very last episode essentially (at which point the manga ended as well), there was never any need for filler.

Yea, which makes for a better anime. They should all just wait for the manga to finish, unless its an ongoing story of course.

Sometimes the reverse holds true. Murder Princess anime >>> Murder Princess manga. Mweh. But yeah usually the mangaka is better at actually ending stuff.

Lol. Reinhard wants to marry Mariendorf out of guilt. So hilariously awkward, just like Yang.

I really doubt Reuental is gonna betray him. There's just way too much foreshadowing. It won't happen. I'm sure of it.

Julian + Karin is a very boring subplot. I don't like Julian and I don't like Karin either. I guess I'll get used to it.

I want more Oberstein damnit. He's not stupid enough to let Reuental betray Reinhard. He's probably the smartest character in the show at the strategical/political level and I want to know what the hell he thinks. You're not part of the 3 Imperial Admirals for nothing!

We got spoiled that Mecklinger is gonna... live. Cool. I wonder if we can deduce anything out of it...

Speaking of LoGH, I went to a panel about it at Otakon 2009 where they went over the full order of viewing chronologically, which ended up being pretty ridiculously detailed (at one point, you're supposed to stop watching an episode 12 minutes in and go watch a completely different season before coming back or something?)

Anyone have the order anywhere?
