My favorite anime, Yu Yu Hakusho, now has a live action adaptation on Netflix

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but it's been really interesting to watch the discussions/debates between those who have. I feel like there are 3 different camps, with the 2 extremes being the most vocal and most likely to misrepresent the opposite view, despite the extremes taking the time to flesh out their own concerns:

1. Middle Camp: "I thought it was decent. If the objective was to fit in as much Yu Yu Hakusho as possible within 5 episodes, then I think the goal was pretty much met. A lot was missing, but overall it was better than nothing, and there were a few really solid highlights. I'd rate it somewhere between 5/10 and 7/10, and I hope they make more episodes."

2. Hated-It Extreme Camp: "I really feel let down. I understand that certain fantasy parts of the manga/anime can't exist in a live action adaptation with a limited budget, and that other parts are going to be cut due to time restraints, but I feel like even the parts they kept weren't done well. Character personalities and interactions weren't consistent with the source material, the plot is confusing because so much is combined at once, the key moments that were retained still lack the necessary gravitas, and even some simple, aesthetic, design choices were a complete mismatch. Here are ten additional points that specifically address my disappointment: [X]."
But then also, when replying to someone who is in the Loved-It Extreme Camp: "Anyone who enjoyed any aspect of this show is a moron and should take a spirit gun to the face. This live action has ruined Yu Yu Hakusho forever, it's literally cancer, and everyone knows the only rating for this show is a 0/10. Am I allowed to pick a number less than zero? How about a -3/10?"

3. Loved-It Extreme Camp: "I really enjoyed it! The live action series is doing an incredible job at efficiently navigating through dozens of episodes, trimming the fat, and creating a unique take on our beloved Yu Yu Hakusho. The battles are incredible, I thoroughly enjoyed the references and Easter eggs that were nods to the source material, and I'm really excited to find out where this live action goes next! Here are ten additional points that specifically address my admiration: [X]."
But then also, when replying to someone who is in the Hated-It Extreme Camp: "You dumb, pathetic, piece of trash. I can't believe you wanted a perfect, one-to-one copy of the anime, with a budget of infinite money. Don't you realize that these spirits and demons are fictional? You probably want the Yusuke actor to die in real life too, just to stay accurate with the source material. Stop condoning murder. Anyways, I rate this live action adaptation a very modest 37/10."

Definitely in the first camp for me.

It's done pretty damn well but it just rushes WAY too much, barely gives you any time to get to know any of the characters while also squishing two of the first major arcs together into 5 episodes.

The action is done quite well, and the special effects are pretty good too for what it is, but the show would be a lot better if it wasn't so squished.

I'd give it like a 5 or 6 out of 10.

I still haven't seen it because I know this would bug the hell out of me. I watch the series yearly all the way through. I would be pissed to have so much just squished together.

Modern? There's a lot. Miragee or Manitou can probably give you better recs than I can though. You could check out Outlaw Star, Tenchi Muyo, Shangri-La Frontier.

Golden Boy was rated 18+ sex comedy though. Not many of those are being made, probably something like Peter Grill?

Would be easier if you specified a genre or a general vibe you're interested in watching. GB also doesn't follow a typical structure in that each episode is pretty much a separate story.

The quick look I did for Golden Boy certainly didn't say it was a sexy comedy. In that case yeah, good luck lol.

oh 18+ feels unwarranted but it definitely had some.. sex/y stuff no question..

Well I think it turns out Golden Boy was rather unique (and unfortunately super super short)

But i will try to look into your recommendations

just finished:
shield hero s3: meh... a little better than s2 (s2 was terrible btw) and the last chapter revelation didnt help in anything to change my opinion. 4/10

eminence in shadow s2: pretty good and funny, i liked the animation too.the ending left me wanting a season 3. i would recommend 7/10

jjk s2: i guess i need to watch the movie? i didnt and felt kind of lost with the mains story. the battles and animation were great imo but the powers and restrictions were really confusing 8/10
i would define my style between a mix of ByuN, Maru and MKP

Pretty sure you and I are the only ones here who bothered watching Hikari no Ou s1. S2 seems to be moving nicely on the story end, even if it isn't exactly the neatest progression.

That's basically ecchi comedy. These exist in varying degrees. Shows similar to Golden Boy specifically are a bit harder, but there's still stuff like Great Teacher Onizuka and Prison School.

Prison School was precisely what I watched after.. but it had a very different vibe (probably as in.. 99% focused on sex stuff).. Golden Boy felt different because it was also about "getting good at different crafts"

Yea the movie will help explain who Yuta Okkotsu is and why he wants to kill Itadori. The movie is also pretty good so I’d recommend it either way.

Another idea: try Grand Blue or Grand Blue Dreaming (always thought it would be "Grand Blue" but MAL says "Grand Blue Dreaming") - might not be exactly like Golden Boy, but at least its worth watching

Not sure why I'm mentioned here but I'm honoured, even though I can't help with the request at all. /o\ :D I hadn't even watched Golden Boy, so I gave the first episode a try and this is not my type of show at all. Judging by the first episode, the focus was >80 % on sex jokes and about 1 % on learning a craft. As in, there were two scenes where the MC asked his coworkers questions. One of those scenes even had dialogue.^^ Maybe it's different in the following episodes but I'm not going to watch the rest and I can't give any recommendation based on this one episode, sorry.

Yes, I suppose you are correct. A bit of a shame because it was surely one of the better shows last year. I feel like the story is a bit erratic atm. but generally I'm enjoying it. It's definitely not a 08/15 story progression.

My take is the same as Vindicare's. You have to go into it knowing that it's not trying to be a faithful remake (there are a bunch of retcons). Rather, it's a half-new / half-similar story with some nice references and Easter eggs.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is now on Netflix as an 8-episode live action series. It's pretty good. Some retcons and a lot of squishing of major events, just like in Yu Yu Hakusho and One Piece. Special effects / combat are solid though, just like YYH and OP. Casting is decent, just like YYH and OP. Overall, I'm leaning in the positive/like direction about it, rather than disliking or absolutely loving it... just like YYH and OP.

Let me know what you think! My wife and I watched the first 3 episodes last night; we should be able to watch the remaining 5 episodes this weekend.

Found one other gem that might fly under the radar. Majo to Yajuu (The Witch and the Beast)

Really cool anime. Pretty dark too with mature themes (not necessarily nudity mature) and cast.

Edit: 7 episodes in and it's becoming my favorite anime of the season. The way they build the world, the sense of discovery, the cool characters and interesting stories just work so well for me.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is now on Netflix as an 8-episode live action series. It's pretty good. Some retcons and a lot of squishing of major events, just like in Yu Yu Hakusho and One Piece. I enjoyed One Piece live action a lot. Like surprisingly a lot. I thought YYH was entertaining but not a real adaptation attempt since it was so squished.

Avatar Live action is even less enjoyable for me. It's visually striking but that's about all. It tries WAY too hard to be mature and dark foregoing all of the levity and humor of the original source material which doesn't work because the source material's story is fundamentally still a kid's story. The dark undertones work well as an accent to the kids story, but not as the centerpiece when it's trying to be a serious drama.

I give Netflix a lot of credit for how good it looks and how well the story is paced, but it just doesn't work as an adaptation because it's trying to be too different on a fundamental level from what the original was.

One Piece live action worked because it embraced what it was, silliness and goofiness as well. YYH captured the tone, and the look and feel of the anime really well but just didn't have the budget it probably should have to be stretched out to a proper length adaptation.

Avatar has the budget but not the feeling of a genuine adaptation.
