Fundamentally, CLANNAD is just another slice-of-life series with a bit of fantasy elements incorporated, but at least it makes great use of its fantasy attributes, particularly in After Story; while there will be a lot of rather common sights in the series, CLANNAD outstrips a lot of other slice-of-life series by not only delivering a heart-warming plot but also balancing out somewhat believable character development, especially for side characters that would normally just be cast aside to focus on a subpar development for the main protagonists. Hence, it's about time for Thratur's 2010 top 5 ranking! I used this list to remind me what I watched from this year http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Anime_of_2010, but I do not think anything is missing. Please note that this ranking is merely my opinion as a watcher and is completely biased. I also didn't watch everything this year, obviously. I invite you to do the same if you dare! 5. Angel beats! Spring season started strong with a fresh new story from the creators of Air, Kanon and Clannad : KEY. With Angel Beats, we get a whole new set of characters, probably too much for a mere 13 episodes anime, but all of them were well-designed, even though we didn't get the chance to learn about all of their past. From the setting of Angel Beats!, we can guess that they all carry a sad past, and this is confirmed by the few characters we actually learn the past. Yurippe's childhood touched me. Otonashi's determination made me cry. Yui's condition made me feel bad. We also had the awesome TK, the lovely Tenshi and Christ, of course. Just see how cute Tenshi is. ![]() Aside from the great characters, Angel Beats had a very short, action-packed story, filled with humour and thoughts here and there. I would have loved it to be a 26 episodes season. There are so many stuff that could have been studied further. I personally appreciated a lot this imaginary world where everything you wish can just appear, i.e. Tenshi's powers or the SSS' weapons. I see that a lot of thinking has been put in this small school-world, whose purpose is still unclear. It also had the best OP of the year. I'll always remember Mystlord's rant on this show, but I have to agree that they are perfectly justified. 4. Durarara!! The first thing Durarara reminded me when I watched it was Baccano!. And damn Baccano! is awesome. Just like it, Durarara! focuses on many different characters with completely different goals and characteristics. It would be hard to choose some main characters in this lot, even though that's probably still possible. Mikado and Celty definitely stands out. I just loved the idea of a sexy headless rider. Of course, she had a complicated past, and while I didn't read the light novels, I can tell that she would have an important role in the future. And who didn't hate this guy? ![]() Izaya is probably the most-annoying "villain" I've ever met. I would love to see him get punched by Shizuo. But that's exactly why he's a good villain. While he is annoying, I believe he's up to the task of creating a huge mess. And that's exactly what we want. But enough talk about the characters. Durarara!! deserves this spot because it has a thrilling story. I didn't see coming at all the end of the first arc. And Shinra surprised me quite a lot there. The second arc was not as good, but it looks like it set everything up for something greater. I look forward to a second season. 3. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya ![]() Released on February 6, I had to wait, tempted by an horrible camrip until December 18th before watching this. It was definitely worth the wait. Long haired Haruhi? Yuki having a crush on Kyon? Seriously? ![]() As usual, the Haruhi universe disturbs me. I may have about 20 theories on this shit. None makes sense, of course. Disappearance helped me clean that up a bit. The movie starts slowly on some everyday nonsense with Haruhi organizing some kind of Christmas party. Very fast, it spirals into a situation that we are all affraid of : what if you wakes up someday and something changed and noone believes you? Of course, Haruhi would believe you. But she disappeared. Quality was sublime. Music was awesome. Realisation was incredible. I still rethink about that scene when Kyon talks to himself towards the end, and this is arguably the best scene in the entire movie. I really don't know what to add here. The movie was well done. Concept was great. Watch it. 2. The legend of the legendary heroes. A main character more powerful than any other wizard in this world, but who hates to do anything but sleep. Instant win. A tortured king who wants to create a better world for everyone. An annoying girl who eats dangos all the time. And many more. The legend of the legendary heroes is set in an universe where a lot of stuff is happening that the common people should probably not know about. This guy is dangerous. ![]() In the end, it's a story about who is the most powerful, basically. But with very good special effects and sounds. There's even some Starcraft in it! We may criticize a bit of filler here and there, but it was definitely worth it for the bigger story. It also had the best ED of the year. 1. Shiki A vampire story. Well, almost. They drink blood like vampires. They can't go out at day. They transform people they feed on in vampires. And, less importantly, they can't enter your house if they're not invited. But they're not exactly vampires. But that's not what made Shiki so good. It starts slowly. Very slowly. So slow that you wonder when the hell is something going to happen. But during this time, you get a feel of the characters. You get to know most of them very, very well. You get to meet the doctor of the village, Ozaki, and understand his frustration as more and more people in the village die. Characters die at an alarmous rate. And then it all blows up. ![]() Some characters go crazy. A LOT die. There was more blood in this than in anything I've ever watched. Murder. Betrayal. Mistake. Suicide. You get it all. Realisation was perfect. The slow progression from introduction into action did wonders. And this is why it deserves my #1 spot.

However, what would be your ranking then Spazer? ![]() Edit : LOL A KAMPFER SEQUEL Angel Beats was so rushed that I didn't really enjoy it that much. It was an okay show, but I don't think it h My top five would probably be something like: Disappearance because it's a legitimately good adaptation of the book, and actually managed to improve it, imo. DenYuuDen would have been first, but, well, dango. Also not enough appearances by Kiefer and Tiir. Bungaku Shoujo was pretty good. Cat Shit One because it's awesome and actually realistic. And one of the following: Durarara. Too bad the second half sucked. Tatami Galaxy. Beginning was good, middle was kinda boring, but the end was excellent. Working. Decent comedy. Eve no Jikan movie. Decent compilation movie. The extra scenes were nice to have as well. Gundam Unicorn doesn't get a spot because it's taking so damn long for episodes to get released. ![]() I didn't watch Shiki because the pacing at the start was slowwww. Maybe I'll pick up the manga sometime though.
