Maybe its just hard for me to empathize with people who are so easily spoiled. If people are talking about a topic that I haven't seen, but plan to eventually, its easy enough for me to just ignore the whole thing. Like for example, I was able to go like 7 years ignoring spoilers about Higurashi, despite its popularity, and was able to ignore spoilers about Rewrite, despite a flood of constant conversation about it on IRC when it came out.

Also it isn't that much effort to use spoiler tags on major plot points when you're discussing a show.

I sort of agree with your second paragraph, I rarely get spoiled here (unless I'm brain-afk and open a spoiler tag I shouldn't have opened) - but it still can happen.
