Harem means you have 3+ girls running after MC-kun for guys to watch it and go "aaaaw, if only I had that and this guy gets it while being completly stupid with girls... I'd be a thousand times better than him if only given the chance!" *I did indeed misread that last part* I don't think this though. If I had a choice, I would pair everyone else with another side male character after they all realize mc-kun has his soulmate.

I see harem are a more specific genre then that :\ On April 11 2015 08:58 IceHism wrote: I don't think this though. Too much work for most creators, just throw in an open ending so they all have hope and be done~

And you could probably grant some leeway where there's only 2 girls at a time at most, and any others either move on before others arrive, or only show up once or something.

That's why the open ending is a thing to begin with, you'd end up with a bunch of sad girls otherwise when the entire purpose of the show is to be happy go lucky about how some guy gets super lucky with girls. What people think they want and what people actually want isn't really the same though. Do you think someone would watch IS season 3 if they announced the end in an OVA and want to finish it by making everyone else who lost find someone else? That's just the wrong genre all in all for that. On April 11 2015 08:59 Slaughter wrote: I see harem are a more specific genre then that :\ would have been no problem whatsoever to introduce more guys in SAO and make it more balanced, but they decided to make Kirito jesus who could get any girl he ever wants if he only so much as lifts his finger by making sure there's 10+ (not actually 10+ but you get the idea) different damsel in distress' that all fell in love with him after being saved. That's what cheep and I are arguing. They just did it because seeing a bunch of cute girls fancy MC-kun sells well and if it was made with that thought in mind it is a harem for me.

No, that's not true. I like suffering and it would be fun to see the other characters suffer. But there has to be some light at the end of the tunnel. Not that everyone gets everything they want but that they do get some hope for the future. I don't think people would watch IS though because that show isn't even popular anymore. The LN was never popular either. Idk though, a lot of the stories that I like that people call "harem" don't really have an important plotline that surrounds the MC getting girls. In Index, touma has a gigantic harem but that is really irrelevant to the story. He isnt even gonna get paired with anybody at the end at this rate as of NT12. Even SAO, once they get into alicization arc which is best arc, Kirito becomes a cripple, his best osananajimi male friend dies, and kirito is hospitalized irl for the majority of it. And there is no more harem stuff. Heck, I think the only shows I would tolerate the open-ended harem ending would be shows like HS DxD. Idk man, maybe I'm just watching shows that have harem elements but are not harem anime.

And yes I agree with you Icehism. SAO just has girls introduced, they sometimes show they may like the mc for like 2 mins then that part is pushed to the side for the actual plot. There was only drama for that once with his sister, everyone else basically instantly recognized its all about Asuna then dropped it and never really brought it up again. Similarly in Index they just have the MC play white knight and he saves a bunch of girls all the time, most of them get barely ever seen again except for like Misaka and Index. Completely different from something like DxD where the girls are fighting over the mc for who gets to sleep naked with the mc in bed or any other clearly harem shows where its a major point of contention and a major part of the plot.

The "harem" aspect is really an afterthought in SAO, just an excuse to keep everyone there in the group together through their common ties to the MC. What point is there in keeping them around? What has the loli with the little pet dragon done after her arc? You can stuff cute girls into anime and ACTUALLY give them a reason to be in there but it's just not like that. They have their arc, get rescued, fall in love with him and are there to be his harem and nothing else. Hell it would be fine if they'd just make someone join the "harem" without falling in love with Jesus. Once that happens once or twice I'll stop calling it harem. By the looks of it the little kid that was after imouto is probably dead just that the author never mentioned it... I can't even remember anyone else that is male and not dead except for the red haired comedy character. Oh right, the government agent. He probably had like 3 minutes of screentime but even in that case the nurse going after Kirito was probably a bigger thing.

Because the authors wants to stuff a lot of girls into the work as possible because they know their demographics. So he killed 2 birds with one stone by showing his MC doing cool shit and rescuing girls and getting them to join. Notice how no one gives a fuck about relationships outside of literally 1 or 2 throw a ways scenes with the blacksmith and loli where they look enviously at the main couple for less than 2 mins. Its not a harem when its barely noticeable outside and only known from very tiny moments in the grand scheme of the show where its almost tacked on like "oh yea this person also likes the mc I guess". Its complete white noise background shit. Its not a harem when its like a token tack on that is never, ever a focus or priority. Blacksmith and loli are just background supporting characters anyway, its like asking what is the point of the red head and black male guys. They are just there.

If the author wants to portray him as jesus saving lifes while stuffing lots of girls in it for eyecandy that's fine. Doesn't mean everything with a double X chromosome has to fall in love with him on sight.

And you are crazy if you don't think Sinon and Leafa want his cock after their respective volumes. Excalibur SS is enough evidence for that. And Mother's Rosario wasn't about Kirito. Asuna got the expiring harem-member in that one.
