There's your problem.

I liked the supporting cast and their back stories but some seemed really boring and out of place for an online RPG. It felt like the anime was trying to convey some deeper meaning while I was looking for some kickass hack n'slash with swords&shit. Also: when they say "the world" the only thing that crosses my mind is + Show Spoiler +and following that + Show Spoiler + You'll love SAO lol
And za warudo~
Thing about .hack is that it is mostly about the well made worldview and diverse array of characters, throw in a bit of extras with random themes it tries to explore. The fights themselves aren't that good, and Kajiura can only do so much. SAO is much better for what you are looking for.

Saki Achigahen turning into Tokihen lol.
also lol about Eureka, what a shitty scenario.
oh and silver spoon, being Hachiken is such suffering. Senriyama-hen is not a bad thing. Achiga is boring as fuck.

It was still rather slow at times though. It was pretty clear early on there wasnt going to be any hack'n'slash.

That's like me complaining about reading JoJo by saying there's no plot. Or reading/watching Honey and Clover and complaining there's no gun action.

Im not saying expecting hack'n'slash is a valid complaint. If anything it was very clear what it was trying to convey. Even for the formula it had the way it was progressing got a bit too slow to be meaningful at times. You could call it nitpicking or taste.

Although getting it recommended after saying that Sword Art Online looks promising, I thought it would share more qualities with it than just the online setting.

at the current rate sao is going, it doesnt seem like they're going to get to the gun arc unless it goes for 3 cours or some shit, which is a shame because that arc is comedy gold.

They want S2, imo even 3. So they'll squeeze as much out of SAO and ss based on on SAO as possible. This season should be 2 cours considering that Accel World is 2 and I'll laugh my ass off if SAO is shorter than AW. So you'll get your gun...and lightsaber...at some point.

I haven't read the LN, and I'm really liking SAO so far. It feels a little slow paced so far, though.

There were so many unanswered questions at the end that it just left a really bad taste in my mouth. It just wasn't up to the task of being the new Utena.

The best thing about penguindrum: + Show Spoiler + And I did watch the whole thing. I feel like Star Driver is better for fabulous maxing, though.

The Ringo 180 was kinda weird yeah that's my only serious qualm about it.
Unanswered questions are whatever it's not like the anime was plot driven anyways.
I think it was amazing that I managed to -like- all of the characters by the end, which was frankly amazing to me and a testament to the quality of the anime. It was totally unexpected for me.
Never saw Utena so can't comment on that, but I enjoyed Penguindrum immensely and infinitely more thatn I thought I would judging from the first few episodes since I'm not really one for the slice of life/comedy animes which is what the show set up to be...
Also Penguins. Penguinssssss hnnnnnng ;_;

It's kind of like not watching Cowboy Bebop or Evangelion.
