When it comes to reading VNs, I have indeed not done much. I started fate/stay night but it was a bit annyoing since I was after heavens feel and I have to get through the other two first (the first one is the one that annoys me since i already saw the anime,ubw not as much since the movie was far too short), hehe. For a first one I'd definitively recommend Planetarian and/or Katawa Shoujo. Both are very simple, relatively short and give you a basic idea of how VNs end up working. The former lacks actual choices though and the latter lacks voice acting + Show Spoiler +which most other VNs you will encounter actually have , but they are still nicely made imo. Should go for both if you really wanna try VNs!
