If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

Might consider diving into my first VN this summer as well, based on your glowing recommendations... Any suggestions as to what would be a good start (for somebody not necessarily looking to crycrycry), and where the heck would I get it? And is it self-explanatory how the stuff works, or should I look for a guide - "How to read a visual novel" or something like that?

Fate/Stay-night is pretty good for a first. It has it's sad moments, but it's mostly just badass. You can find a torrent for the game and I'm sure you could just google the fan-translation.

When it comes to reading VNs, I have indeed not done much. I started fate/stay night but it was a bit annyoing since I was after heavens feel and I have to get through the other two first (the first one is the one that annoys me since i already saw the anime, ubw not as much since the movie was far too short), hehe. I could read the recommended VNs if I can get my hands on them but since I just want story I sort of dislike the fact that you easily (in fate at least) die, lol. Felt like I hade to save before every choice.

Ill give it a shot though. Sorry for spelling mistakes etc first post i make from a phone.

For a first one I'm not sure about F/SN. In a way, it's very simple, but the way it's setup (a TON of bad ends, even if they end up with the ever so amusing tiger dojo~) means it's not the best introductionary one to how VNs and how they work.

For a first one I'd definitively recommend Planetarian and/or Katawa Shoujo. Both are very simple, relatively short and give you a basic idea of how VNs end up working. The former lacks actual choices though and the latter lacks voice acting + Show Spoiler +
and has its fair share of haters, especially among veterans
which most other VNs you will encounter actually have , but they are still nicely made imo. Should go for both if you really wanna try VNs!

Or if you hate your life and wish to cause mental trauma to yourself you could go for

I'd suggest Kana Little Sister (NB: very emotional: make sure you have plenty of tissues on hand. Even the happiest ending will make you cry!)

Planetarian was my first VN and I think Kana was the second or at the very least among the first few. Agreed with Planetarian as a good introduction. I would suggest reading Kana first before Yume Miru Kusuri (though very much agreed with Elem, it's very good)

I was lucky enough to have played the game before watching the anime which obviously makes the first path a lot more pleasant. Still for me the game really shines with the last two, especially UBW!

Hey. Mental trauma does not necessarily mean cry cry cry. It's more like + Show Spoiler +
ohgodwhywhatthefuckjusthappenedthereisnohopeleft into aszfgahasyhazdyhgsdjhshsdhs.
. Not our fault the more entry-tier translated (or western made) VNs are relatively saddening.

The ones we've mentioned can all be found at Erogedownload.com, but eventually you get to the point where you'll have to lurk elsewhere to get your hands on them. It won't happen anytime soon for you though.

Try anime-sharing.com, problem is that most things there are raw so you might have to hunt down the English patches separately.

Keep searching. I've found links to Planetarian myself, but I'm not quite certain on the rules here. I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to post here, but I'm wondering am I allowed to PM the links?

A lot of Erogedownload.com links are going down it's annoying. Anyways I recommend Tsukihime for any people dipping into VNs. (Its links on erogedownload are down. I just checked.)

I still found the lack of voice to actually add a lot to it, lol. Besides, better that than some random people trying to do voice-acting in English which would surely shatter its chances at becoming a hit.

Also wtf Saya patch was working on mediafire like a week ago when I got it >_> I'd upload it somewhere for you but I'm not on main computer atm so can't really help right now. If you still need it later I can hook you up with it~
