If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

My cousin has been riding my case about watching Baccano for the past couple months, and I've tried to force my self through it but I can barely finish the first few episodes. Is it as good as everyone says? I was told it was like Pulp Fiction, which is my favorite movie.

I've always struggled to find anime I really enjoy, I put on Bleach last week and said what the hell and I'm episode 225.

I guess I'm a loser from everything everyone says It just reminds me a lot of DBZ and I like epic fights.
Everyone is either delusional, a nihlilst, or dead from suicide.

I thought Baccano was pretty good. It ultimately boils down to the characters though. If you don't like them, you aren't really going to like the show because the plot itself isn't really that compelling.

I just finished Baccano last week and I thought it was alright. Nothing too spectacular but it was entertaining nevertheless. Though the whole jumping into different years put me off at some points since it was mildly confusing.

Well, watched 4 episodes of Saki. I liked it so far, so I'll have something to cover up for the lack of interesting anime this season. :D Thanks for the help guys.

Also Baccano is very good, but as znf mentioned, the plot is a bit meh. I'd stick to it with a few more episodes, to see if you change your mind.

I loved Baccano. I'd suggest actually watching the intro for each episode to help keep the characters straight. It's also the only anime I've ever seen where I recommend the dub over the original voices. The English voice actors really nailed the 1930's Americans (stereotypically at least), whereas them speaking in Japanese seemed odd to me.

I'm not experienced with VNs at all but I'l restate Southlight's Deardrops rec. Riho route is sooooo good. Don't bother with Yayoi or Rimu though. Kanade isn't bad but pales in comparison to Riho.

At the moment it's definitely strongest writing/story I've encountered in a VN, and that's saying a lot considering how critical I usually am with these things. Writing, presentation, everything was just spot on for the main route (I hear the others are not so good, which drags down the game's rating, which I hereby call the Little Busters/DEARDROPS syndrome).

Thats probably what I needed to do since I listened to the original ones. But lucky for me, I have dual audio for that series, woot!

I mean that I was surprised at the Xing dudes being so important to the storyline because the original 2003 series + shambala had such narrow worlds with no conception of other countries. Ling Yao/Greed was so badass I can't believe he was cut from the 2003 series. Also the may/al and winry/ed relationships didn't even exist in the 2003 version. And the ending of the 2003 version + Show Spoiler +
was pessimistic and dark as hell. Even with Shambala tying up the lose ends of that universe, it was extremely depressing that the two brothers were thrown into a completely different universe and that all the people they loved and were fighting for were gone to them forever.

What to watch next.... Have seen almost everything that looks to have decent animation on the header link... FZ isn't done yet, so I'd rather not get into that. I'm primarily interested in the Action/Comedy/Romance genres and am looking for something that has
1.) good art (post-2000 lens/animation technology),
2.) solid storytelling (consistent universe, unity, plausibility),
3.) thorough character development (Loved Ouran High and Haruhi 1. FMA brohood, lucky star),
4optional.) self-containedness. (Thought railgun was solid, but getting into the entire index series seemed too overwhelming...)
5.) finality. (I want to be able to get to the end!)

For now, my queue is Guilty crown, High school of the dead.

Guilty Crown.

Edit: Sorry I forgot to read that last part. Um, if you want good character development then Chihayafuru is perfect for you.

These things werent cut. They didnt exist, cant remove things that dont exist in the manga at the time the show was produced. After they go see Izumi its all just speculation from their part (Bones), the story hadnt moved forward enough or maybe even at all, cant say for sure it was a long time ago. And they were asked by the author not to take any material going forward from the manga and make their own story up. Which is fine really, the original FMA was pretty good at the time.

Yep, just yesterday I finished the originals having watched brotherhood a few weeks before. Originals is overall just alot darker, brotherhood has more a + Show Spoiler +
and they live happily forever after ending.
. In brotherhood though the ending is on a much bigger scope, since they're directly saving the country.

According to your points. I could recommend tengen toppa gurren lagann, it's mech anime but even if you're not into that give it a shot. Maybe Deathnote, cowboy bebop? These are all pretty well known anime though so you might've seen em already.

Yeah, I've seen deathnote and bebop. Stopped deathnote 1 or 2 episodes after + Show Spoiler +
L died
because the main character started becoming unrelatable. Watched bebop on toonami every week when I was a kid. Liked it, but it was a bit to psychological for me to understand at the time. I'll give it another lookover now! Never really got into Mechs since it includes so much genric context that I often feel lost and a bit motion-sick. (even code geass, for example, confused me once the mechas came into play). Will check out ttgl though. Thanks!

That makes a lot of sense. I'm really disappointed in the anime writers, then, at what they managed to come up with. Stories aren't just a sequence of events strung together... The whole "one is all, all is one" theme gave the manga version a lot more structural and narrative unity. The anime/movie writers seemed to be overly fixated on the single theme of "equivalent exchange," which it seemed like the manga's whole point was to debunk and demonstrate that life isn't a zero-sum experience... that we go stronger with our interactions with others.

2.) solid storytelling (consistent universe, unity, plausibility),
3.) thorough character development (Loved Ouran High and Haruhi 1. FMA brohood, lucky star),
4optional.) self-containedness. (Thought railgun was solid, but getting into the entire index series seemed too overwhelming...)
5.) finality. (I want to be able to get to the end!)

For now, my queue is Guilty crown, High school of the dead.

Lucky Star and thorough character development?

What?

Konata has to be one of the most iconic characters of all time in the anthology of anime. Give a situation and you can imagine exactly what she would do in it as though she were living, breathing. That's what I mean by character development.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ There are three kinds of people in the world: those who can count and those who can't.
