I think sanji is legit. It's just that Oda made sure that every enemy he faces is a mismatch to him. Or a good counter.
Vergo is stupidly strong in physical combat. I don't think what law did was something everyone can just do. And i don't believe that was just his DF that beat vergo. I think it's like those stupidly powerful attacks that combines haki with devil fruit. Like Whitebeards Point-blank range attack on akainu one's during the war.
And we know that not even luffy can go 1v1 easily on DF and we might not even see 1v1 but rather a team battle vs DF so it was a non-issue that sanji got easily manhandled.
|
Why cant we hold off discussion about Sanji until we see what he does on Big Mom's ship? It was pretty bad ass how he stood their facing it asking for his Captain's permission to return fire.

We've come a long way No way naruto is trash.
The only reason that is plausible why you compare naruto to one piece is just to shit upon naruto more.

I don't pay much attention to the Naruto thread, but I'm pretty sure this thread now gets much more attention than the Naruto one. So, "we've come a long way" since 2009.

Remember that Naruto is far further through its story than One Piece. When One Piece reaches its final arc we may all be here shit talking it harder than Naruto and Bleach combined. Food for thought.

Who knows, but Naruto showed signs of shitty writing very early in its story (relatively early), while we are maybe past One Piece's half way mark, and it seems to be retaining its quality. Plus, just comparing how many chapters each have, One Piece has easily kept its quality for much longer than Naruto ever did.

Thats an interesting thought. I wonder if it will become true. There probably will be DBZ-esque moves like giant rasengans, but the story will have to more interesting than moon's eye plan take over the world.

Yeah .. I hope that nightmare doesn't happen and Oda keeps his composure and pride. It's also a bit easier to accept one piece being ridiculous since the show is actually ridiculous despite being decent.
On the other hand naruto was the sort of serious type and was pretty decent. Then suddenly decided to go 360 on everything that was stable on the show.
So we may not trash talk one piece as much as naruto just due to the atmosphere and theme that one piece has been from the beginning.

My guess is that Oda and Kishi(and dozens of other mangaka, let's be realistic) took inspiration from Dragonball. But Oda decided to make a fun and colorful world with small trips to serious town, while Kishi settled in serious town but then remembered that he wanted to be somewhere else. It's still not colorful or fun, so I can only call that place prophecy city in religious symbolism valley.

Usopps fights are the best imo I'm just waiting for him to finally be man even though his physically weak go and take on a superior opponent. To my knowledge the only time that has happened so far is chu. I'm looking for a real fight like the one he gave luffy in water 7. He was scared he still used strategery and tricks to fight so it was still his style. One can hope though.
IMO this is why Sanji lost to vergo. http://www.mangapanda.com/one-piece/678/12

Not the mention that we learned Gol D.Roger.
I agreed with this until the ending of the arc. How everyone that got hit by enel or beat by anyone started walking around. Yes I know that people rarely die in this. The main characters and badasses like the shandian elites and SH's yea thats fine that they get up and walk around. But Connis' dad .... really. It was the only arc that I can think of where fodder characters that weren't important to the plot were actually shown waking up when they should be dead. I know it actaully happens almost every arc but still it really kind of made me mad there

The Skypeia arc is definetely top 2-3. It was amazing especially the promise by Calgara and Norland. Holy shit part was so good.

Plus, just comparing how many chapters each have, One Piece has easily kept its quality for much longer than Naruto ever did. One Piece is staying great mainly because the main characters started out as BAMF and continue being BAMF theres no real training or becoming stronger (Luffys only really changed twice) and each arc the main enemy is just a bit more badass then the last one by keeping the enemy strength only slightly changing and relying on just god-like story telling power level dont jump crazily
its pretty hard to write an amazing story without having the characters change that much though
|
One Piece is staying great because its writing has remained strong the entire way through. You have proper world building, foreshadowing, build up, satisfying climaxes, drama, comedy, and Oda stays focused and on point for the most part. You can't really say this about any of the other long running shounen manga.
|
Well OP has more chapters than Naruto so there really isn't any excuse. Its a simple matter of Oda being the superior mangaka. Or who knows maybe Kishi is just really fed up with doing Naruto now so he is half-assing it just to end it quick so he can retire or start a new story.
|
This isn't very likely, as Kishi had several opportunities to let things come to a satisfying end. And then he started introducing new characters...
Just asking, is there anyone whose favorite arc is Thriller Bark?
|
I found thriller bark to be one of the most funny arcs so far. Probably because Brook is one of my fav characters together with Chopper and they get some spotlight there.
|
I'd say on some points, OP quality increased over the years. While in most series, be it manga, movie, etc. it's usually the opposite. They start off with a bang, but lose something over the years; perhaps because they introduced a fresh and new concept at the beginning which everyone was excited about, and attracted everyone's attention. When that became old they couldn't innovate and come up with something that would spark interest once again.
One Piece has some unique features that somehow keep it interesting to me. On top of that, I believe that Oda (while I don't know him personally nor where he gets his inspiration) is just a good writer, and has thought out a good backbone for his manga, so it doesn't just start to get absurd when he wants to introduce new concepts. (for example : technique asspulls. Oda can introduce new fruits, improved haki users, ..., and it'll make sense. Kishi can introduce new justsu's, but sometimes they feel like asspulls just for the sake of the story; these powerups are crucial in shounen manga, and I think Oda found a good way to introduce them without it sounding completely rediculous or farfetched.)

About arcs what is everyone's opinion on the Davy Back Fight arc? Story wise it has no purpose except the end with Aokoji and that could have been done on it's own. During the Davy Back Fight it was slightly teased that a new crew member could join, maybe Porche or a ship wright. Of course I don't think anyone reading it at the time seriously thought so since the forced joining through a Davy Back Fight rules is the complete opposite of the Straw Hat's crew friendship. I suppose even though nothing happens as a result of the fights, no crew change hand or power ups gained (Luffy should have kept the afro), but it was still entertaining when I first watched it. Since I watched the anime till the CP9 arc it feels similar to the G-8 arc, one of the better side adventures that the Straw Hats could have had even though Davy Back Fight actually is canon while G-8 is not.
Anime only watchers must be confused watching the last few episodes. They included some filler in the C block fight where Luffy fights generic warriors and him befriending Ucy. Then in the recent episode they introduce Hajrudin the giant who towers in the arena and then you have to wonder how he was never seen in the previous episodes. The extra scenes in this episode with Jola were good particularly Nami's reaction to her body change.
|
Never knew g-8 wasnt canon :O G-8 felt to me like a weird but pretty natural and funny continuation of the story, while davy back fight (minus aokiji encounter) seemed like a filler, drawn out too long for it's purpose. Needless to say, i didn't like the davy back fight at all.
