I think that's a fair assumption.
Ishida was an arrogant boy with a deep resentment towards the shinigami. Knowing the shinigami use swords, and him having a bow, it's not farfetched to think he was under the impression the superior quincy only use bows.

The quincy rulebook on how they fight has been rewritten since someone decided to wake up and gift everyone wackey unique abilities for Kubo to avoid stale enemies. Had all the quincies only fought like we're used to seeing quincies fight, Kubo would have needed to actually write good story. Seeing as he can't, he needs a constant supply of unique enemies for the heroes to fight (and distract us from the story).

There's a pattern of enemies with unique abilities. Shinigami? Check. Ishida (i.e. one of two last quincies)? Check. Arrancar? Check. Fullbringers? Check. New-and-improved-Quincies? Check.

As Ishida had already shown how real quincies fight, the quincies can't fight like that anymore (in Kubo's mind).

TL;DR: Kubo sucks.

Almost all shinigami use swords, and still they are really different one from each others. It could have been the same with quincies, but I guess it's easier to just play it easy and grant everyone superpowers.

But their swords are sentient and have unique abilities. Barely half actually fight with the swords.

It's obviously to set up a scene later on where, after the Shinigami have kicked the shit out of all the magic/sword Quinicies, Ishida shows up and kills everyone with his bow because he's a "true Qunicy".

For a moment I really believed that every page this chapter would just be showing Kenpachi's back. Luckily It was only half the pages.

Such a cheesy line. I really expected it to be countered with "no, Kenpachi is the strongest power etc."
For next chapter? I bet that dude will imagine himself to be uncuttable and then Kenpachi will cut him anyway.
