Mortal Engines was a completely different story than the books and they dramatically changed a lot of the things I loved about the books. The movie was okay, if viewed in isolation, and I think the story from the books would probably have taken 12 or more 1 hour episodes. What I really wanted was a series. The earlier commenter was right, it felt really rushed, even though they cut out so much. It just jumped from scene to scene without building context because it had to pack so much in. And that’s really unfortunate because it’s the depth of the world building that made the books so good.

However it was visually spectacular, there is no denying that. And they nailed the character of Anna Fang, who they needed to be effortlessly cool without digging too deeply into her backstory.

I hate those kind of movies. This is where the "I read the book" stereotypes come in. The book gives you so much more world building and chara dev that movies are forced to skip or rush. It takes you, the viewer, out of the experience. I want to see the movie, but I'll probably stream it.

If you haven't seen Sorry To Bother You, do so. That movie is hilarious and I think it would get a good score from a lot of the posters here.

I thought it was only ok tbh, the tone was all over the place, felt like a mix of idiocracy, black mirror and twillight zone. Social commentary really on the nose, added drama which doesn't really work that well and then the ending which felt like they just tried to go viral. It's competently shot and the performances are solid, but the script is a mess imo.

The ending did have me kinda...lost? But everything leading up to that was good. The primary concern of getting his uncle taken care of was glossed over after introducing it.

A bunch of media outlets made a big deal about the "First Ever Comic Book Movie" hitting the 40th anniversary of its release date. So my gf talked me into watching "Superman The Movie" from 1978 with her.

It holds up quite well. There is an age difference between Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder that is somewhat noticeable. Apparently, this is one of the reasons Kidder got axed from the Superman 3 sequel. Superman The Movie and Superman 2 were filmed together in 1977.

There was so much politics in the production of this movie that the guy playing Superman, Christopher Reeve, didn't even make the "marquee". The marquee read: " Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman Star In A Film By Richard Donner".

I suspect the hard core comic book fans might find things wrong with how the Superman The Movie does not follow the official canon. I know the basics of Superman and not much more than that and so for me the movie fit the comic myths just fine.

The ending of "Superman The Movie" was so impactful that discussions about it appeared in very popular TV shows 15+ years later. This spoils the ending... but its also pretty funny. So in the 1990s the ending of a 1978 movie was common knowledge. Wow. That is Star Wars level impact.

Spiderman - into the spiderverse is a visual and music masterpiece.
The plot itself is decent enough, the voice acting really helped for some of the more emotional scene, but honestly the last time I have been this impressed is bladerunner 2049.
there was never a dull moment watching the movie, great pacing and overall my fav superhero movie.

Mortal Engines is getting raked over the coals by both old and new media, but I really enjoyed it. But to me, it's more or less what I wanted from seeing the trailer. I didn't need more than a conventional story when it's set in such a spectacular new world. I get why reviewers find the pacing to quick with not sufficient time for development (If Hollywood had designed this as a movie first and no book was involved the blonde Valentine daughter would've been cut along with the fellow who hands over ancient tech to Valentine.) But it didn't diminish my enjoyment of the film. The only minor complaint I would make is the ending is a bit too pat.

But yes, as to what Kwark was saying, though I have not read the novels, my answer to pretty much any dense book adaptation is a miniseries (although budget becomes more of a thing then.) But miniseries has the space to flesh out the entire story without stretching it out endlessly like an ongoing 22 episode tv series nor cuts out too much like a big budget film usually needs to.

But for big action films, if I remember what I've seen in theatres this year, I enjoyed it more than Incredibles 2, probably more than Solo and certainly more than Last Jedi (which just fails at basic story structure, build up and delivery). I thought it was generally just good, competent story telling without anything super surprising. For an action film, a solid B or something like that. Certainly not the C-'s and 1/5's I've been seeing.

I didn’t know there was a book and could tell that. I would’ve enjoyed it more if they fleshed out the story and characters more—I wanted them to have a proper build up. Felt very rushed but that’s not a complaint, I get that it’s condensed into a movie.

CGI was just absolute stunning. I’m a sucker for steampunk fantasy. I’ll read the book with the movie visuals registered in my mind.

That said 6/10. Better than I expected.

Roma

One of the best films of the decade, an instant cinematic classic, and Alfonso Cuaron's best work to date. It's heartfelt, funny, powerful and absolutely gorgeous.

I didn't know either and just ordered a copy of the first book. I need some light fiction in my life right now. The hardest part was picking the most evoking cover.

Definitely agreed, will write some more later but i absolutely recommend watching this if you are somewhat ok with slow paced films. There is no real plotline, but the way this slice of life is presented will captivate you!

Almost Famous (2000)

I haven't seen this movie in a long time. I feel like they released this about 15 years too early, what with the nostalgia industry in full flow right now. Its a brilliant film, which has a rare kind of honesty about it. The acting is great, and that scene on the bus with everyone singing Tiny Dancer still gives me music chills.
Its smartly written and very well acted too. There's some misjudged stuff in there but I can overlook that. The actors are actually playing the instruments too (I think Peter Frampton taught one of them how to play the guitar). Details like that are always welcome.

Its a film about 70's rock, but its about so much more than that. Its a coming of age story based on Cameron Crowe's own life story (he did actually land a job for Rolling Stone interviewing some bands, and many of the characters are depictions of real people from his past).

In Bruges - saw this black comedy again after a long while and it was still as funny as the first time I saw it. The gore was more graphic than I remembered. I do recommend subtitles though as it was tough for me to catch up with Colin Farrell's accent.

Yeah, I just saw Into the Spider-verse yesterday and was blown away by it. That has got to be one of the best movies I've seen in years. The animation style was definitely interesting, the characters were great, the motivations, etc.

I feel like the second half of the movie wasn't as strong. + Show Spoiler +
The other heroes were great but I think the big fight scene dragged on too long, Doc Oc, Kingpin and the other super-villains were kinda underfleshed, and it doesn't make sense that his dad happened to be there.
Other than that it is an almost perfect movie.
Can it be I stayed away too long? Did you miss these rhymes while I was gone?

Man this spiderman hype is sure something, i didn't see it yet but i also have a hard time believing that it is that good outside of the animation.
Hopefully i get the chance to see it soon, really want to be able to talk about it as long as it is still on people's minds

Just watched the Black MIrror Special Bandersnatch and boy am i mad about the execution. The idea is interesting but in the end the story is super meh and the choices are all bullshit. The thing then decided it would not let me even have the ending i wanted by suddenly showing me credits after not giving me the chance to reroll and instead let me chose a path i already picked again and then rolling with it. great. The whole thing was frustrating and and i guess that's what they wanted but it doesn't make that a good movie. I never felt like wasting time with a movie before but this one did.
