The White Rose by B. Travern
the story how evil capitalists destroy everything that is good in the world
pretty straight forward and entertaining

1Q84 currently, it's interesting as my first Murakami novel.

i agree! it would be my last choice from what i've read,
and the only murakami i didn't finish!

i distinctly remember the phrase: kissing down there giving me a rough time.
chalked it up to a personal fault eventually, will take another stab at it possibly.

i loved a lot of his other stuff when i was younger:
hard boiled adventurer, kafka on the shore, blind willow, sleeping woman.
still carry with me the mental picture of an old woman full of bees (?) and a guy who kills cats for his flute.
conspired against by a confederacy of dunces.

Wind-up Bird Chronicles was my first Murakami, and that's probably why it's my favorite, but Kafka on the Shore is a close second.

I'd say toss 1Q84 aside and start with sputnik sweetheart. It's my favorite Murakami, and it's very short, so it's a perfect starting point

The City&The City is fantastic. I might prefer it over Perdido Street Station.

I finished A Darker Shade of Magic by Victoria Schwab. It was the first book by Schwab that I read, and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. A simple and dashing fantasy novel, light but interesting. Will definitely keep an eye out for more of her books, especially if she writes more books about the same setting.

I'm also considering reading some Murakami next, as a lot of people here seem to be doing so as well, tho I guess the overall reception seems to be a bit divided? Most likely would pick up either Wind-up Bird Chronicles or Kafka on the Shore, but not decided yet.

I haven't gotten to reading A Darker Shade of Magic because my TBR pile is so damn big, but I suspect if you liked it, you should give Vicious a try. I loved Vicious. It's an interesting combination of fun and dark that Victoria Schwab did well with.

I liked Embassytown but I thought it was a bit too long for what it had to say. Could've been shorter imo.

hey guys, haven't really been posting a lot here but I have been continuing to struggle through LotR. I'm at the part where Gandalf takes Pippin to Gondor... and I'm starting to realize that I've been struggling through it to get to the 'good stuff' when I never really found it. Maybe I was expecting better after reading the Hobbit (bad movie, good book). I'm not really even sure what I was looking for in this book, and now I'm wondering whether I should just lay it to rest or push on through and finish the thing. I don't like the thought of being an 'accomplishmentarian' (where you just read books so you can say you've read them and check that off some list), but I have put a lot of time into it, and I still want to know what happens and what the book is like in complete.

I'm going to assume this thread hates the Dresden Files? I've been listening to them on audiobook for the past 6 months, and I love every moment of the novels.
