Why do you assume that? Do you have the impression that we are literature snobs? If so, this is certainly not the case (at least not for all of us). Personally, I have not read the Dresden files. And I probably never will. I simply do not have much time to read, so I only read stuff that people with a similar taste to mine have recommended to me. But I do not see the point in hating any book.

How can I tell if a book is a first edition? I have a friend who is getting married, and for a wedding gift I wanted to get him a book from his favorite author. How can I tell if this book is a first edition, or if the website is just lying to me? Here's the book in question: http://www.biblio.com/book/heroes-hero-worship-heroic-history-carlyle/d/599859395

I really enjoy the dresden files, they are fun reads for me so its pretty great, I just finished the 2014 release yesterday. I have problems with the characters, and Idk if I like where the story has gone but I'm gonna keep reading them, I find them entertaining.

![]() I didn’t know what to expect going into this. It had a slow pace and was very character focused, which I was fine with, especially with how good the writing was. The names were really hard to keep straight. Usually I’m fine with names, but here they’re overwhelming. The funny thing is I think that’s the point. Addison is trying to make the reader feel as overwhelmed as the main character. Overall, not my favorite thing ever, but very well done. I enjoyed it. The Troupe by Robert Jackson Bennett ![]() I loved this book. I can’t really sum up the premise. But it’s got some interesting, almost H. P. Lovecraft undertones (although it’s definitely not an H. P. Lovecraft type book). It’s weird, heartfelt, and interesting. Definitely recommend. Half the World by Joe Abercrombie ![]() I mean, it’s Abercrombie, and my love for his writing knows no bounds. I loved this. It follows two new viewpoint characters rather than sticking with the one from the first book. It’s interesting to have characters in this series who are actually good at fighting. Don’t really have much to say. Just that everything’s amazing. Daily Life in the Medieval Islamic World by James E. Lindsay ![]()

As you can tell I'm pretty happy with the Shattered Sea series, but with that said it definitely felt like a step down from the First Law standalones. Though, besides the meh first forty pages Half a King, I can't put my finger on what's missing. Still love the books, but I'll admit that I'm looking forward more to Abercrombie returning to the First Law world than I'm looking forward to Half a War. Oh, and I have to mention that "deep cunning" is my new favorite phrase.

Long-winded guy -- I don't think I've seen an article under 40 pages from him -- but lovely style. I feel the need to go through his whole bibliography at some point even though I don't do Achaemenid studies. He's at the forefront of several of the most recent studies on Achaemenid socioeconomic history, though. (And for good reason, given his access to some unparalleled primary source materials.) I need to actually read Briant at some point esp. since there is an English translation of his huge history. Also rereading GGK's Lions of Al-Rassan and picked up some Mary Stewart at the used bookstore the other day. Listening to Beowulf on audio (thank you, Youtube). It's a good life. I feel like a person of leisure again!
