What's the best & worst movie you've seen in 2014 so far?
[ SPOILERS ]
Worst - Godzilla
I went in with high expectations but damn what a letdown this movie was. The trailer is probably one of the most well done trailer ever made that makes you think " wow this is gonna be so epic & there is no way this movie will be a letdown " but like srsly. Also the trailer is hella misleading, it makes you think Godzilla is the actual threat, but no it's the Mutos. Ye, those are gonna send us back to stone age. -.- Mutos got more screen time than Godzilla. They probably should have just called this movie Muto. The first half is a bore fest. In fact, things don't really pick up until about 90 minutes in. Every time you think a fight is going to happen the movie just cuts to something else. I was astounded. It wasn't even the lack of Godzilla fighting that made this movie boring to watch, it was the lack of Godzilla doing anything at all.
If you like drama + alot of side stories and 5 minutes of action then this is the right movie for you! Ye, I am kinda angry now since I am a huge Godzilla fan, but this movie was a huge disappointment. The biggest disappointment I have seen so far this year. What was the director thinking while making this movie?
Best - Edge of Tomorrow
I went in with low expectations and came out speechless. Hell I am not a Tom Cruise fan and tbh I don't like his movies at all, but this movie was so good - words can't even describe how epic this movie is. You have to see it to know what's up lol. No srsly, in case you haven't seen it yet, go and see it! The trailer was kinda " ye hm looks like a decent movie with some cool special effects and explosions " but it's so much better than this.
I don't wanna spoil anything here lol, just go and see it yourself. For me this is not only the best movie of 2014 so far, but one of the top 10 movies I have seen all time.
IMO

Worst - Sin City 2
A sequel should be better than the original or there's no point in making it at all - except $. This was everything the original was, but just slightly worse. Marv was overused, Bruce Willis was a ghost. I was expecting good things. I haven't read the graphic novels btw.
Best - Upstream Color
Absolutely brilliant. Its not a new movie (2013 i think) but its an incredible film if you like to sit and try to figure out the puzzle. BTW you get no clues lol

Gone Girl best. Noah worst.

Assuming you mean released in 2014, I took a look on IMDB and have very few from this year, so here goes:
Worst - Non-stop Uninspired thriller with Liam Neeson still doing his action stuff. Story was pretty poor and the main perpetrator was pretty easy to spot due to some spotty acting and directing focus.
Best - Guardians of the Galaxy Fucking loved it. Main characters were awesome and the film was highly enjoyable.
Should get to watching a few more films from this year, but just haven't been very interested. Gone Girl looks like it could be good, though.

Also: as a non Godzilla fan I really liked the new Godzilla film.
Me too.
You seem to enjoy good films, I will be following you on letterboxd.
This year the best film I saw was probably Silver Linings Playbook
can't recall the worst, there were too many and I blocked them from my memory

Only recently started to watch more Art House films and older films. Your list seems to be very heavy on that regard. Got a lot of catching up to do.

Best: Gone Girl
It just came out, but it's fantastic. It's a modern day Fincher film through and through right down to the excellent Trent Reznor score and gorgeous (albeit dark) visual compositions, but it's also an incredibly faithful adaptation of a great book that explores the gender politics of a marriage in the guise of a page turning thriller. It's got maybe Ben Affleck's best leading man performance, a star making performance out of Rosamund Pike, and even Tyler Perry in an impressive supporting role. There's a death/sex scene in this movie which is easily the most impactful sequence in cinema I've seen this year. It's a 2.5 hour movie, but doesn't feel that long. Gripping from start to finish.
Worst: Godzilla
It's just kind of boring. The humans in the movie have forgettable characterizations, basically existing without personality which robs all the monster stuff of its stakes. There's way too much expository dialogue. The whole movie is ugly, and drags on for what feels like forever (despite a pretty tight 2 hr runtime).
Honorable mentions: Grand Budapest Hotel, Lucy

If you haven't seen any Tarkovsky yet I highly recommend you do so, starting with Stalker.

I've only seen Andrei Rublev yet (the 205 min version in a film museum) and it was indeed amazing. My initial reaction:
Incredible ending. When suddenly you see those colours after three and a half hour of black & white and suffering and pain and ... aww... Gotta watch it again some day though. Since I'm not an English native speaker and I've watched it with English subtitles I feel like I've missed some stuff (especially in the first half).

Worst: Lucy Best: Gravity
Lucy was so bad I rushed home after cinema to create an imdb-account so that I could write a review and elaborate just how bad it was and get it off my chest. Provokingly bad movie.

I quite liked Lucy. I thought it was a tight, visually dynamic, action movie. It had a great kinetic energy to it. Sure, it was dumb, but I don't watch action movies for the script.

Worst: Noah's Ark starring Russel Crowe. Best: Lego Movie.
