Comparing it to the Lord of the Rings which was intended to be a much more dramatic, deep, dark and heavy story is never going to work.
Right on. My only problem is the vast departures from the book. White orc? The dwarves fighting against elves on barrels? Sigh.

Contrary to my better judgement I watched the Lord of the rings films, all three of which were garbage. I am not going to watch this Hobbit stuff, as it will be even worse.

Your opinion is wrong.
That's like the only time an opinion can be wrong.

I concur, "wrong opinion" plain and simple.

I don't know what on earth would make you classify lotr movies as garbage.I know a shit load of people that are not really into lotr so that's why they never understood the hype but no one ever said it was garbage. The music, acting, beautiful scenery alone would be enough for them to be classified as at least decent.Either you are a troll or your favorite movie is wedding crasher or something like that.

I'll third this. While there have been very few instances where I have encountered an opinion that is objectively wrong, this has definitely been added to the list.
LotR is by no means the best movie(s) ever made, but they are hands down the greatest book-to-movie projects ever, and the movies are very good.

I 100% agree; however, Jackson clearly wants these movies to be the LotR, so all I'm really bitching for is consistency. The constant pandering to one group of fans, and then another, is really irritating in the series so far. I wouldn't mind a "true to the book" style.

I'll tenth this. Dude is just confused, I guess. Poor little guy.

If Jackson did want to go for a true-to-the-book style, he wouldn't have needed three films. The Hobbit is a book you can read through in an afternoon.

They're trying to make it something it's not, while still trying to make it similar in style to the books. I feel like if it had been one movie it would've been perfectly fine.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just curious what exactly it was that put you off from them specifically.

Comparing it to the Lord of the Rings which was intended to be a much more dramatic, deep, dark and heavy story is never going to work. This is such a cop out. Regardless of what the Hobbit is in it's book form it is not a children's movie. Not only is there a lot of violence in it, there is also Gandalf, Saruman, Elrond sitting around talking for 10 minutes. There is a reason it's rated PG-13.
PJ and co. are the ones who decided to make three PG-13 movies. They are the ones that decided to make it an epic tale by weaving in material from Tolkien's lore to make it more about the war against Sauron in Mirkwood and not just some dwarfs and a hobbit trying to find and conquer a mountain.
So you have a big looming threat to the whole world and at the same time dwarfs rolling down a hill in a big ball, like it's a Disney cartoon from the 30s, which makes sure you are never sure what tone the movie tries (and fails) to convey.

way too much CGI for my liking =/

Thought the first one was great. Loved the music. As someone who grew up on Tolkien, I truly don't understand people's complaints. It is as faithful to the book as I could care for it to be, and I like the additions they've added. I like that they're trying to tie the story into the LotR more.
And wow, I've just read the cast for the second movie and am more psyched than ever. Cumberbatch doing Smaug's voice is just perfect, and I can't wait to see Stephen Fry and Evangeline Lilly. So much sexiness.
I think I actually liked Jackson's The Hobbit more than his Lord of the Rings movies so far. I did love Jackson's LotR movies... but some things didn't jive with my imagination from reading the book. Particularly Viggo Mortinson as Aragorn. That was not how I pictured Aragorn. Viggo's Aragorn seemed like a guy who'd rather sing pretty songs in a feminine voice and write love-poetry than go striding in the woods on an adventure. Richard Armitage's Thorin, on the other hand, I quite like. I think Armitage did a great job, and Thorin is a really good character -- more flawed and interesting to me than someone like Aragorn, who is kind of boringly perfect.

How could you guys possibly think DoS won't be good
The most badass Elve of MIddle Earth, Legolas, returns
and we get Evangeline Lilly as a redhead...^^

Legolas sucked in the LOTR movies.
1. Say something stupid and cheesy. 2. Look at sky. 3. Please die.

One of the things I didn't like as much about LotR was that the music was ever present and overused, which was a problem I felt as it never allowed the actors their own personal space.
|
I confess I am quite content with the pandering storylines in The Hobbit. the LotR was a tight epic with broad appeal. The first movie was slow enough without adding Tom Bombadil and the huorn were a little silly. The Hobbit can be silly and have lots of sideplots, even if it doesn't quite follow the book. We'll never get "The Silmarillion: The Movie", so I'll take this as the second best thing.
