I do remember hearing that Mashima didn't plan too far ahead early on because he thought the series wasn't going to go for as long as it has so its possible little inconsistencies from early arcs just happen because he didn't have the whole story planned out from the start.

I remember something like that as well. I wonder if he'll redeem himself and kill some more lead characters (how long is Makarov dead?) and if he'll find a way for Zeref and Mavis to marry and live happily ever after.

He barely even kills villains. Markarov is like the Neji death, one meaningful one to throw in a token emotional moment and its easier to kill off the older generation. Maybe he will axe Gildarts too. He already ruined Jellal's good death and end of his arc to contrive some made up romance so Erza has a love interest.

I agree. To bring up the Neji death, that's hard man. I got kinda choked up at that one. But I think that he can do it further and kill Natsu or Gray. Someone meaningful has to die for this to be a good ending. This is turning into the 4th Ninja War and we don't have people dying enough. The small fry have probably been killed off, but not enough main people. I think the Ten Wizard Saints are dead (at least the top 4)

Gildarts was touted to be the strongest besides God Serena so many times and he never got the chance. I'm curious to see what he and Natsu would do to the world if they fought.

The 10 wizard saints were big fish in a small pond. Only one of them is actually strong in a greater context and that is God Serena. By now probably a good chunk of the main FT people are at wizard saint strength. Gildartz has been that way for ages too. Not sure where he would rank though. Seems like maybe borderline top 4.

Jura has the problem of the character who is said to be strong and gets defeated to show how strong the enemy is so he always seems lack luster in practice.

I don't think Jellal is anything especially strong either though.

I don't think either of those would happen.
Honestly he should be way better than top 1, not top 4.
I mean several FT members have beaten the Alvarez people by now, and serena was said to be one of the weaker ones there.
Meaning FT members are much stronger than the saints.
This is a huge flaw in the anime/manga as a whole, but that's where we are, sadly.
Gildartz is the absolute strongest FT member, no contest.

I'd love to see a fight between gildartz and eileen, honestly..
