Warrod was chosen for his plant based magic (as well as having known Mavis) Jura was his strength for rock magic Jellal was chosen for his celestial magic Makarov chosen for his Ability to change body parts to giant size (and knowing Fairy Law) Jose was chosen for his weird death magic God Serena was chosen for his 6 dragon lacrima
tl:dr They were chosen for their magic prowess and abilities, not necessarily only combat power. Some have vast reserves of magic power, some have abilities that would give most people pre-Alvarez trouble.

That's just your mind filling in the blanks that Mashima never covered. in the end no-one can say what they were chosen for, as it was never explained nor implied how they were chosen. The most you can say is that the selection process appears to be random or internally inconsistent.

Agreed DMCD. But if you think "logically" you can draw some conclusions as to how they were selected, although a lot of the information on some of them are vague or missing. Just one panels and quick interactions with some of them.

Couldn't have said it better myself. But throughout most of the anime(up until the last 2 arcs really), hints(pretty blatant ones too) were given that it was due to them being the strongest in fiore. following zero's list though, why wasn't natsu added for being raised by a dragon, erza for knowing how to summons words and change costumes and whatnot. I don't see how that's different than "knowing death magic stuff" or "knowing rock magic" Hell, Lucy should be a saint too then, cause she not only knows celestial magic, but she has all of the zodiac keys, which happen to be the strongest ones in existence, and is literally BFF with the spirit king. Also , knowing Mavis shouldn't give any bonuses at all I'm afraid. She's just a guild founder, when fiore-wide view is considered.. Yes she's special for fairy tail, but for others, not so much. Should everyone who knows someone who was some guild founder be added to the saints? of course not. If anything, knowing Mavis should be a minus, considering how fiore has viewed fairy tail pretty much the entire manga/anime.
also I completely disagree with how "thinking logically" would help understand anything about the selection process. If anything, I think it's the complete opposite.
I also urge you to read the wiki about who the wizard saints are. You can see mention about their strength and power being mentioned throughout.

Well they were chosen probably due to a combination of power + influence/leadership. Which is why Jose was kicked off because he became obsessed with power. Warrod has a lot of power but it isn't as good for combat. You can be powerful but specialize in stuff that isn't good for combat.
All the 10 were clearly super powerful in the country and either in or near top 10 in power. Of course that isn't the only criteria as Gildartz would be one, but he is a wanderer who doesn't take up responsibility so he wasn't one.

Except he is, and we've been through this conversation before. Him saying he wasn't was not to be taken seriously. He is one of the kings of ishgar, who are considered to be "monsters" and the strongest mages Fiore has to offer. Yes, combat-wise.

I see where you're going with this, abuse, but they had to have certain conditions met. By the time all of them would have been strong enough to be considered a wizard saint, that's the current arc (possibly previous). Now, there is no need. Lucy didn't have that kind of power until and after Tartaros. Erza wasn't strong enough until the Laxus issue. And Natsu wasn't strong enough until he got Second Origin.
They could have been nominated, but they didn't get to the level needed. And possibly an age thing would need to be considered as well.
|
Well then we agree, that strength is indeed the primary motivator for being a saint.
Also I don't believe age has anything to do with it considering Siegrain (who was Jellal) was on the council, and he is the same age as Erza, and he was on the council years ago.
Honestly though, yeah, strength-wise everyone in FT should have qualified since the tartaros arc. Not just qualified but they should've been the only ones there, really.
|
LMFAO. Maybe. But Erza's proficiency with her magic compared to Siegrain was laughable. He had Ultear helping him as well. So there's that. Maybe age wasn't as big a factor, but it could have been something.
Fairy Tail as a whole would probably be the only Magic Council needed to keep everyone in check. Which would be a good adult style anime if they went with it. I could see a Fist of the North Star or something with FT members. Maybe even try a Berserk style?
|
I'd watch the hell out of a berserk-style show with Erza as the main protagonist.
|
Well Erza is probably at least 70% of the reason I read FT anyway.

Should we start a petition? Post this to reddit and see what that cancer of an online community thinks?
|
the council hates FT, FT has a bad public image since tehy cause massive collateral damage like all the time it would be bad for them to have mages like that be the "face" of the council
|
Last I checked the council was no more.

Just now getting to read the chapter. How did you get it so fast??
And yes, Irene lost it. Completely.
|
Why is she going insane because the dragonfication was prevented in them? She looks fine and non dragoney hehe
Edit: finished chapter, seems she has been living by taking new bodies.
Something seems messy about this whole Irene thing tho. Can't put my finger on it.
