Well, Igneel managed to fight Acnologia for quite a while, and apparently Aconologia was ready to take on Zeref's whole army himself. It might not be too much of a stretch that Igneel's last bit of power would be able to take on Zeref.

This fight would be a lot more interesting if we didn't know that Zeref loves Natsu and pretty much everyone else on the planet and really really really wants to die.

I am beyond disappointed that this power was only a "one time thing".
I am also sad that the entire fight against zeref only took 1 chapter.
I hope he did die, but honestly, there's just no way mashima would let zeref get killed so easily. I refuse to believe.
That being said. that was pretty damn epic.
EDIT: Very interesting that zeref mentioned Layla, who is Lucy's mom..

the amount of hate FT gets is ridiculous
this is how the author writes storys OK? he spent like a year training and came up with a super move its not wierd
if you dont like how FT is written, has always been written and always will be written just leave, your not gonna like the next chapter or any future ones or any future manga he writes

to be fair, Rave Master got off to a rocky start. Haru was pretty much a siscon at the start always bringing up what his sister taught him during fights.
