wat?
I've always associated the term 'melodeath' with bands like In Flames, At The Gates, and all of those other Gothenburg bands who aren't really dm but still have influences. Melodic death was for bands like Kronos, Benighted, Lykathea Aflame, Amon Amarth, etc etc (mostly the bands I like, lol) who were primarily DEATH metal bands who were good at mixing melodies with their brutality.
I mean I guess you could combine the two but would you really feel good about putting In Flames in the same category as Hypocrisy or Vehemence? o_O
more importantly... does any of this stuff matter / affect your judgment of a band? can't you just listen to them and like them or not like them and leave it there?
damn categories. genres were only ever meant to help people who liked a particular band find other bands that are similar by browsing the same "genre." was never supposed to be rocket science.

Well of course it does, but that was 13 years ago. Every single one of their albums since then has sounding nothing like The Jester Race does. That album was amazing.
And to the other guy, no... but it helps when looking for similar bands to have some sort of label attached :p
Gothenburg melodeath is a large part of melodeath. Melodeath is just an abbreviation of Melodic Death.
Think of it like insects and bugs. The majority of bugs out there are insects to the point where you almost always think of an insect intuitively when you think bug. However, in truth they are not one and the same.
Melodeath is a very diverse genre...you can't just say, "oh if it isn't Gothenburg/In Flames style then it doesn't count!" That's stupid.
And yes, Amon Amarth is very melodeath. Get over it.
I've never said what I think is fact. I just said that's always how I've thought of it.
I'm really not trying to argue genres.
edit: And I don't listen to many 'melodeath' bands anymore anyway, I was just using the Gothenburg sound as an example since It's probably the most well known.
Focus was considered a great album, but as a band, they're not considered a "great"...
Yes they are. The endless sea of prog-tech-death bands out there disagree. Hell, if there's one thing about Cynic, Atheist, mid-late Death, Pestilence, etc. I don't like, it is this effect they've had on the metal scene.
They're barely even metal now...Traced in Air is more prog rock than metal. Still an amazing album, but I wouldn't give the band that much credit...
True that they're not really metal anymore, but the bands current state doesn't affect what they've already done. For another example, see Ulver.

I don't think I was arguing with you about the whole genre thing...in your last post, there was nothing I really disagreed with, lol.

If they're that big within the tech death scene, I'll give it to you. I don't listen to a whole lot of tech death, or even death metal, to be honest. Beyond that, though...

No problem - that's why I'm here . It's not exactly released yet, but... you know... internet. Four of the songs have been released legally on digital EP/through myspace anyways. AEON is likely the best song.
