I've heard them sing live in big groups.. it was a bit haphazard but to be fair it was early footage (nhk had a special on) the size of the groups, and the way the whole thing is run is truly a stroke of genius, i could talk for hours on why its such a brilliant system.

I've also heard them sing live. That's when I found out they were bad at harmonizing.

I heard the NHK special was based on the documentary which I really want to see, but it's not coming out on DVD for a while. There are also reports that the lip syncing is very tightly controlled; each mic for each person can vary over how much lip syncing they want.

I meant the special that was a countdown about their top NHK performances.. but as they have one every other week on tv.. I swear if you live in Japan you literally cannot avoid the whole ###48 thing. Saying it's everywhere would be an injustice to the marketing department. But there was a documentary at new year like that you mentioned which showed lots of backstage stuff, the Janken thing, and followed them right up until the new year red and white song contest. Google will find you torrents for them easy enough. (not linking you a torrent however.. not sure TL's rules on that) I think Takamina sings live a lot, and after that documentary I did gain a bit of appreciation for her, no one will admit it, but she's the lynchpin, not Maeda or Yuuko. Poor girl never gets 5 minutes to herself.

they definitely fine-tuned it as a wota trapping system.... but really that makes me just feel worse about the average wota. Just supply a ridiculous amount of idols, so every moe need can be met. Then have wota vote for lineups. pretty brilliant.

I think that the documentary you're talking about was the NHK special on them and was only part of the whole thing.
The whole documentary came out in theaters in late January, and has a release date of late April on DVD.

I might sound overly critical of them, but I am a fan. It's just awkward to see them try and sing live when there's so many of them. Individually or in small groups, they *could* sound good, and I started as a fan of no3b featuring Takahashi Minami, Kojima Haruna, and Minegishi Minami... they all have pretty good live voices. They all did solo, live voice songs at a recent concert, AX 2011 Best Setlist.

You make it sound so simple!
Voting for lineups is a pretty big deal, as the top 12 ("Media Senbatsu") get the most opportunities. It gives incentive for everyone to work hard. If you're a participant, it gives you a sense of responsibility, as if you were the one that produced the group.
Anyway, there are a lot of non-wota fans now. All the real wotas are probably fighting on messageboards every day over whether H!P or xxx48 is better.

So... new AKB48-sub unit song.

Can't believe I haven't found this thread before, I like me some good J-Rock from time to time(There are some really sick guitarists in some of these groups)

Here is a new song by Asian Kung-Fu Generation about Japan's recent earthquake. Different from what I norm hear from them but the song was still nice and the lyrics are very touching.

Lyrics
+ Show Spoiler +
"On the Sand"

On this spring afternoon, we're still shaking
Not a slice of bread to share
Running out of reasons, that night when you couldn't do a thing
Is there love? Are there prayers?

On this spring night, we're still shaking
Wrapped in a small blanket with you
Running out of reasons, the next morning when you can't do anything
There is love, there are prayers

Hey now, barely sounding out
Tears spilt into the darkness
My powerless voice reverberates on the sand

Where will I be and what will I be doing in 10 years time?
Maybe laughing with someone
Where will you be and what will you be doing in 10 years time?
Will there be love? Will there be prayers?

Hey now, barely sounding out
Tears spilt into the darkness
Your small wish reverberates on the sand

Let's skip, jump over this puddle
Let's listen to the whistle of the wind
Let's drift into slumber by the windowsill
And think of those better days

Hey, right now, barely sounding out
Tears spilt into the darkness
With our small wish, we're going to live on
And know for sure, on the sand

Awesome, I love Mizuki Nana. ^^

Not really digging that Asian Kung-fu Generation song, unfortunately. I love their older stuff, but not feeling that one. :S

^ Susumu Hirasawa

Also, the entire Garden of Sinners series (and many other albums) by Yuki Kajiura is great. Here's a great song of hers:

The Garden of Sinner series is a lot more ambientish though, so if you're into that definately check it out :-)
It is a sign of strength to cry out against fate, rather than to bow one's head and succumb.

More pop music. Despite the bad title of the song, I found it to be really enjoyable.

I'll be honest... I really don't like ayu as a live singer. sometimes shes good, sometimes shes ok, sometimes shes just horrible.

my favorite live song of hers is still

That "Happy Ending" performance is pretty awesome. :o

First time I've heard the song, actually. I haven't been keeping up with Ayumi since, like, six years ago lol. "Evolution" and "M", amongst others, will always be ingrained as classic Ayumi for me. :D

its an especially sad performance if you know the lyrics. (can't find a good translation, sorry)

Considering she writes the lyrics herself, the tears in her eyes during this performance make sense.

It's okay, I can understand it.

I was thinking the same while I was listening and thought, "Hm sounds interesting, maybe I should translate it..." but I thought there'd be tons of translations by now. =P

New Girl Next Door PV, "Silent Scream".

http://www.tokyohive.com/2011/04/girl-next-door-unleashes-pv-for-silent-scream/

Song kind of reminds me of Dream's stuff, which makes sense since they were avex too. I like.

It's pretty decent ^^ Thats the first song that I've heard from them.

Anyone know where I can get Marie Ishikawa's songs?

I've been looking for Ishikawa Marie's songs as well. The only song I have of hers is the one she sang for AILI's album, and I only found like one song of hers from youtube. =_=

On another topic, just found out that Mizuki Nana sang a song about my birthday, July 7th! ... though I know it's actually about the holiday Tanabata than it is my birthday, it's still neat.
