Realistically, that happens close enough to never that there's no real need to discuss it. TBH just the mana cost savings is big enough for me to dump that 3rd point into SA over cloak in every game worth mentioning. Especially for people who don't play the hero, theres no reason to discuss not getting your best ability simply because you don't understand how to position as visage (AKA stay wayyyyy the fuck back cuz ur skills have huge range, plus birds).

you must think there is only 1 way to play every hero. as i said, its situational. if your fights are going to be relatively drawn out or they have tank heroes like dk/alchemist then maxing soul assumption is fine. but 3vX situations chances are you will only need 2 lvls in soul assumption to kill anything. further lvls in it is surplus to requirements. with visages nerf on his armour with the latest patch, getting cloak is more important than ever, and if you think you can skip cloak because you should be staying "way the fuck back", then youre mistaken. getting a grave chill on someone already puts you in nuking range for pretty much every hero, not to mention there are always heroes that can abuse/disrupt opponents' positioning much better than you can maintain yours.

But yeah. Visage can be counterintuitive to play as a support because your primary goal above all else is to be an early/midgame source of damage. He's pretty bad as a solo support because he leaves holes as a support (no hard lockdown, not a great initiator/roamer) and it wastes timings where Soul Assumption is an INSANELY strong spell. Because of that, Visage is really good in trilanes with a complimentary support, and actually fares pretty well in mid because of his decent stats and pretty big timing in arcanes/mek/aghas. Also there is something to be said for delaying max rank into Soul Assumption, except for the part where while Soul Assumption's scaling isn't honestly that great (+65 damage situationally? Not outstanding. Not bad, but not outstanding.) the scaling of grave chill and cloak are typically worse. There will be situations where you need the up-front better armour or that one second of extra slow, but there are also situations where you'll be getting stacks so fast that not having max rank would be a waste of time.

if you have a very mana-intensiv line-up the cm might help the with the aura more than a visage could. but there also might be scenarios where a visage will top a CM. its not a easy question to answer it, too much things to keep in mind. just go for the support you like, both have their ups and downs, so just pick what you like.

Ever since ranked matchmaking launched I've stopped playing random all the time and have been trying to really learn heroes one at a time. There's about five supports that i really feel comfortable with, but visage seems like a fun one to add to my roster. Follow on question, what are some indicators that he'd be a good pick up over other supports like CM for example? In my experiences in pubs (and applicable specifically to pubs only) I'd say having other reliable stuns and disables, notably AoE ones or having some early teamfighting potential that you can capitalize on. Supports like CM provide a lot of disables across a team fight both AoE and single target. Visage has a mediocre slow (32%) and the stun, but the stun isn't necessarily reliable or at least not reliable until you're very good at using it (even then...). It's specifically not all that reliable in being an AoE disable unless you have a supporting slow or disable to help set it up. If your team is lacking in disables across the team as a whole you're going to have more trouble with a visage than someone like a CM most likely. If your team has good slows/disables from the mid, offlane, other supports, or even carries then Visage can make a good choice, especially if you think there's going to be an opportunity to make use of a maxed soul assumption early. .

In AP if Im lucky, I get allies who are not totally awful, but most of the time just awful scrubs. However, cm and cd seem to attract an entirely different kind of pants-on-head retarded kind of noobs who are utterly hopelessly useless and moronic. Anyone else had this experience? I have the exact opposite experience, although in unranked. AP is a complete mess, and there's no team coordination or team composition coordination. In non-AP people at least cooperate and communicate.

Of course 40% of the time you have one of the 1st 2 picks on your team and are still at the mercy of your allies picking horribly, but at least you can make your choice in peace.

It's easier to build than most anything other than Mek. Realistically post-Mek it falls in the same boat as most other situational follow-ups (Pipe, Vlad's), but is more or less the option to take when none of those are very good for the game in question, but you also can't afford to go a bigger item yet either.
