So after a few games with abba in dota 2, how do you lane this guy? One spell cost mana and life, the other push the lane and the last requires to be in melee range, in a peaceful pull fest party or in trilane vs 2 or 1 hard laner, he's ok but the rest of the time he rather seems awful during the laning phase. Any tips?

I think he can be alright in what would normally be a shitty dual lane (especially vs another dual lane). Say it's dual lanes vs dual lanes and the carry you're sposed to support is some shitty laner like medusa or am or spectre etc; you can safely pull because their dual lane can't kill you because of aphotic, and if you react quickly they can't kill your carry either because of aphotic. The fact that it can push the lane won't matter if you're pulling, and the fact that it could possibly steal cs from your carry won't matter either because the carry is getting more than they would otherwise anyway because they don't fear death because of the shield. So I think he's a decent babysitter.

And of course if you have a more aggressive carry like CK he can add dive potential with his spells, possibly giving you additional kill potential even in just a dual-lane.

Vs a solo he's decent as well because he can pretty safely zone their solo using aphotic; and if their supports try to gank your mid you just tp in and aphotic the mid hero and the gank is over.

I just checked dotabuff and noticed that Elder Titan has a >54% win-rate in pubs. He's one of the highest win-rate heroes.

Why does Elder Titan have such a high win-rate in pub games?

I thought about this but it doesn't explain why he would have a better win-rate than nearly every other team-fight focused hero such as Tide, Earthshaker or Magnus. It also seems unlikely that a single stomp/fissure would be able to catch more than a few heroes (assuming no setup which is to be expected in most pubs).

I'm relatively new to DotA and think I'm progressing rather well. However, one thing that really runs me over is running a melee carry in lane against opponents that are REALLY insistent on harassing me and pushing me off the creeps. What's the best way to deal with getting pushed off the creeps and not being able to get a good CS start early game?

Since I'm at a low matchmaking level, literally every game is a 2/1/2 lane setup for reference.

Start with a stout shield, upgrade it to a Poor Mans Shield if you are an agi hero. Go to lane with enough regen.

Elder Titan's aura is insanely good as it removes 100% of base armor and 33% of base magic resist (so all heroes with base 25% magic resist now have zero magic resist unless they have a cloak/hood/pipe) and it is pretty easy to use as all you have to do is be near someone to get the full effect.

As in, for many melee carries you should be going to lane with Stout/Tango/Salve/3xbranch or even Stout/Salve/Tangox2/Branch if you are really having issues.

Beyond that, if you get relatively close to creeps then issue an attack command on an enemy hero those creeps will immediately run towards you. You can utilize this to get the creeps closer to you and therefore in a more favourable position to last-hit without being harassed too much.

Essentially, VERY BRIEFLY issue an attack command on the enemy hero while you are somewhat near the creeps, then run away asap. Don't bother actually hitting the enemy just give your hero the command to try. The enemy wave will follow you for ~2 seconds and when they quit the wave is likely to be in a more favourable position for you. Obviously not always, so you need to think ahead about when this is a good move.

Because he's a better lategame hero than all of those thanks to Natural Order and can transition into physical DPS better than all of those guys (matters more in pubs where your carry might not be dependable and if you are a fed 2nd position hero, you often need to transition into being a carry to keep up lategame damage).

EDIT: One thing to note, Elder Titan is also one of the least played heroes in the game. Typically this implies that while he's an effective hero, many people who are not good or do not know how to play him choose not to play him.

Welcome to Dota! I hope you'll spend many more hours at this amazing game.

The thing is, that if you as a meleecarry get harassed a lot, should mostly be your supporters fault. This is also why 2/1/2 is heavily outfavored in higher mmr-games. Let me explain it a bit more.

Playing a carry in a duallane vs a duallane on your hardlane (top for radiant and bot for dire) is always going to be really hard unless you have the better kill potential. Why? Because the lane so heavily favors the opponent. Partly because of how the woods look (there is much easier to sneak up on you and try to kill you) but also because of the proximity to your tier 1 tower.

If you play a meleecarry with low lanepresence against a two opponents with high lanepresence (such as viper), it is always going to be a struggle and you will always need help from your team. Most of the time, a single supportplayer should be enough, at least if you are on the safelane. This is because with good play, the creeps should always stay very close to your tower. Make sure only to hit the opposing creeps to get the last hit, and try to damage your own creeps as much as possible (this will mainly be your supporters job) and care less about getting the deny. The position of the creeps is way, way more important than denying the creeps. If you stay this close to your t1-tower, it should be hard for the opponent to harass you as much. The cant kill you, and as soon as they move forward to harass you, your supporter should always hit them back. Also, a single tp or rotation for your team, will easily net your lane a double kill should your opponent stay in this aggressive position.

Do not ever go with a duallane with a meleecarry on your hardlane unless your carry is someone with superstrong earlygame, but even then, do it with care.

A couple quick tips for melee carries in lane against harassers:

A: start with a stout shield! Almost every melee carry in the game should start with a stout shield - it'll help a lot. Consider upgrading it into a PMS if it keeps on coming.
B: Start with a lot of regen! Tango + salve at a minimum! This will mean you can afford to take some harassment if you are smart about it.
C:Be opportunistic about your lasthits! Know when its worth getting a last hit for a bit of harass, or recognize if the other team is pushing the wave into your tower for some easier harass free last hits. Careful of being dove though!
D:Ask for a gank / don't be afraid to engage on them if you have better stuns / slows in your lane! Sometimes, the best harassers in lane have low HP pools, so recongnize if they go out of position and try going on them. Worst comes to worst, and you might scare them a bit.
E:Have your supporter pull a stacked camp / pull through 2 camps - this will give you some farm by your tower, and if you practice you can get those last hits under the tower!
F:Wait a bit in XP range and dont take some last hits. Sometimes, you just have to accept you can't farm right now, and maybe wait to fight or until the other laners roam a bit.

G: do not suicide for a maybe kill. Its all well and good to get a kill and boost your farm, but its not worth it if there's a fair chance you could die in the process. Also consider that having the enemy back all the way to the fountain to heal up is worth several minutes of complete freefarm. While having you die, whether you get a kill or not, sets you back several minutes instead.

edit: Just felt like adding that. This is a recurring problem with people all the way up to very high. They think they're Xboct and can dive towers at lvl 1. There's only one person who have the gamesense to keep doing that over and over, and his name is Xboct

As someone who plays a buncha support and looooves trying to push melee heroes off the lane, I want to echo that the opening builds of stout + 2x tango + salve give you the opportunity to succeed. Here's why.

Efficient trades. When a ranged hero attacks you, they've gotta be a sufficient distance from the creep wave and out of range of your friendly support or they run the risk of suffering damage themselves, and they've got no stout shield and probably a smaller health pool to work with in the first place, in ADDITION to likely less regen than you've got (Supports have better things to spend gold on!). What this means is that you and your supportive lanemate should be positioning in such a way that whenever their support tries to hit you, they've got your creeps and your support doing damage to them. As you're more durable and have more regen than they do, their regen pool will run out before yours does, and it will no longer be safe for them to keep trying to harass.

The small timing. If they're trying to harass you early, their goal should be to force you low enough that you can't safely approach the creeps at all. Your goal is to not give a shit hard enough to get to your first item that allows you to further give even less shits about what they're throwing at you. An example is getting tranquil boots early if the harass is particularly offensive, or grabbing a helm of iron will earlier than you'd otherwise want to for that bonus armour and regen. Or just getting to your ring of health in the case of AM or other heroes you feel battlefury is a good idea. If their harass fails to make you hit zero regen before you hit this/these early items, then the lane stabilizes and you're far more free to farm safely.

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense. It's still counter intuitive when you consider that his spells can be quite difficult to land or use effectively but I guess that's can be explained away by the fact he is so unpopular.

this is more of a preference, but I'd like some opinions. Played a Crystal Maiden with teammates Axe, Centaur, BH and Storm. I generally like buying Blink on CM (given enough farm ofc), but Axe, Cent already had blink and we had Storm as well. So as far as initiators go, 3 out of 5 is more than enough, right? and that's not even countiing BH.

Yet, I still think that I should've bought Blink. Already had a Ghost Scepter, so I was good as far as survivability goes. Mek is bad after 30 minutes, we already had pipe..

tl;dr - is it worth it to get a Blink dagger if 3 teammates are already initiators?
