im not saying offlane invoker is easy. but if you get a 1v1 it is still viable. he wont outright lose the lane on his own just because hes in the offlane, like you said there has to be a threat from mid or something.

I've just got in to playing the game and I am wondering when it would be suitable to play with all heroes? Also wondering which heroes people would recommend for new players (I have not played other MOBA games before)

Play all heroes from start, there is no other way to learn them. Read spells and item descriptions, you should have basic knowledge once all of this is done.

For beginning, I think it doesn't matter unless you wouldn't have to control more than one unit or have to cast many spells at the same time. Just stay away from invoker, meepo , chen, enchantress, beastmaster, enigma for a while and lean more towards stun/disable heroes like dragon knight, bristleback, sandking, skeleton king, drow, rubick, leshrac, bane etc..
Lastly I don't recommend to get used to invis heroes since it gives you fake sense of safety that will be a hard habit to break later on. I recommend invis heroes for my noob friends who doesn't have any intention to play the game later on.

Cheers guys, I'll do that then. I'm finding melee heroes a bit annoying to use at the moment because I tend to over commit, I guess that fades in time though?

It never really does, everyone tends to overestimate their ability at times, but yes, it gets better.
The heroes listed in Purge's guide are kind of okay for beginners.

Once you have more experience with different heroes and how they interact with each other, you'll have a better idea of when to commit and when to back off. Melee heroes tend to punish inexperience more but they are also more rewarding once your decision making gets better.

This might not be a simple question, buy any answer is good.

What can i do to teach a LoL guy who wants to try dota? I mean, he surely knows basic MOBA (i dont like the term either) things, but, what are the main diferences (i've never played LOL), and in what should i focus?
Game mode? AP? LHP? HELP?! lol.

thanks

Some of the bigger things for transitioning between LoL and Dota

-Carry TPs! --These don't exist in LoL so they may not realize how important they are in dota
-You don't have infinite mana early game for spamming spells
-Denying creeps is very important, not just for denying enemy exp/gold, but for controlling how far the lane pushes
-Dying early game is a much bigger deal because you lose gold, so don't over commit and make sure you have map vision before you go too far into enemy territory
-Towers are nowhere near as strong in Dota, so don't think just because you are sitting under a tower in the early game means you can't be killed.
-Rune control is way more important than a lot of newer people realize.
-Importance of pulling/stacking jungle camps to supports.

Weird. I've always been at the edge of very high in my mmr, with 1/5 solo games usually in it. I also have a couple of friends who are very far into very high, and all my games with them are in there as well. Then lately I've gone on a fairly good winning spree, winning 16 out of my 19 (or 20 if you want) last games...and not a single one of them have been in very high, whether I've been in stack with my friends or not.

Did they change the system lately? or did I just break it?

Streaks don't tell you anything about the MMR system. I'd imagine you won all those games because they were below your skill level so you stomped like you should have.

Nor should it. But amount of games in each bracket should give you an indication. Yet after winning almost everything after my last game in it, it seems to have sunk rather than risen. Thats why I'm confused right now.

If you won a bunch of games that you were supposed to lose then the sigma of your MMR would be so high that you could easily still Q into high games, especially if you're on the high/veryhigh split. You shouldn't worry about it until your MMR settles; play some games until you're closer to winning 50/50.

The amount of games in each bracket slightly gives clues about where you stand, rather the "wins" in each bracket does better. You may hang on the verge of very high bracket, have lots of game there but lose most of the time which stands out you are not good enough to be there constantly.

MMR is simple, you must win games you should, and you should win the games that you are not expected to win.

The most important thing to transition from LoL to Dota is to learn how to last hit. Last hitting in LoL gives less money and is easy as fuck (creeps barely damage each other + no denying by the enemy = incredibly easy last hitting). Teach him how to last hit, teach him how to select a build in game (hopefully one that explains how to play the hero) and just let him play the game.

Try to teach him too much and it'll backfire - do one thing at a time.

That's actually the least important thing to teach someone--it's entirely something they can learn on their own.

It's actually far more important to teach someone how the general game-flow is different, how it's overall easier to move the game forward through getting kills, both solo and in setting up ganks.

I know I'm in the wrong because you're Yango, but you're assuming too much for the level of play a newcomer will play at. Laning-stages, the flow of the game, ganking etc are all nonexistent at that level, imo it's more important for him to just get a feel for the game. Know how to last hit -> farm better -> win more games -> play more

though I guess expecting a new player to be able to last hit well even if you teach him is kind of unreal, so...yeah just play the game.

At any intermediate level you definitely will have to explain the completely different laning rhythm in dota and lol. The issue isn't so much last hitting but the myriad of options denying and tempo controll do for you
When in doubt, just believe in yourself and press buttons
