One thing that's been troubling me:

Many builds that I look up don't refer to an item that gives mana regeneration. For example, a Slark build I just used didn't allow me a mana regen item. I guess it's taken for granted that you get a magic wand. But even still, I ran out of mana fast. What do I do to restore my mana? It seems either I have to get a mana regen item, in which case I break my build, or I constantly ship in potions of clarity which doesn't seem very efficient.

sounds more like you are spamming your skills a bit to often.
in the early stages you might need a clarity or 2, but in the end game shouldnt be the case.
your supports should have manaboots to give you some mana.

real manaregen items, like euls, are not needed if you dont go trigggerhappy and spam dark pact or pounce.
Ah, right, I see. What do you recommend at low Elo, when supports can't be relied on to have mana boost? Ring of bassillus the way to go?

Ring of Basilius/Aquila are fine for Slark. They're not good in every situation but when you're starting out those nuances shouldn't matter.

An important habit to get into is Treads Swapping--because changing the stats on your Power Treads preserves your % mana, you spend less effective mana if you change them to Intelligence treads before you cast (then swap back right after). This is hard to do practically in a fight, but should be habitual when you are farming.

he is OK in my experience, several notches below ds and even clock imo. wouldnt do it without being reasonably sure that your up against a lane that wont annihilate you.

It can definitely work in some cases but if you are in a position where you have to last hit with mist coil early then you will find yourself running out of mana quickly.

So I just bought the TI3 Compendium (Yeah, I know, late to the party) and I'm trying to figure out how to get Smeevil courier upgrades. I found this guide and it mentions you can get stuff for completing Player Challenges. What are those?

I understand the whole player card stamping thing, that's pretty straight forward. Is there anything else I should do to accelerate my completion of Smeevil upgrades? The only other thing I heard of was you get 1 Smeevil Treat automatically for playing your first Compendium match.

Lastly, I heard that there are better drop rates for Smeevil related items (cards, eggs, lures, etc) if you play Compendium MM matches. Is this true?

P.S: Thanks everyone for the PL vs SB tips! Makes total sense, I feel like an idiot now. XD

Comp MM gives you a guaranteed card drop(but at what cost).
Completly stamping every player of every team in the compendium takes a while, so you need a boatload of card drops. Which you can then trade, mostly at 1:1 rates.
Or alternately you pay the (in my opinion ridiculous) prices people ask for complete sets on trading sites. I have seen prices for all 85 cards range somewhere around 3-5 keys. Or higher...
Conversely using some simple math you should get between 3 and 6 teams for 1 key, which frankly no one I have seen offers.

Just with the player card stamping you get the edge crab, the edge crab dye, and 2 smeevil treats. With the one smeevil treat you get for completing 1 compendium match you have all 3 required treats to unlock the yellow, purple and red colors for the smeevil.

According to some rumors I heard you have to complete 1 full fantasy team in the comp for the mammoth mount and make all the predictions in the comp for the bird mount.

I don't think you can get lures as drops. Playing 1 compendium match will give you 1 smeevil treat, and getting 5 full teams will net you another 2 treats to finish the smeevil colors (1 for 1 team, 1 for 5 teams). Then filling out your compendium predictions gives you the mammoth and dodo (takes like 5 minutes). So basically you just want to get cards--ask friends who don't have compendiums to give you cards they have (since theyre useless to them), and you can just trade cards you don't want for cards you need to stamp teams. Personally, I used steamep.com to trade the cards for the ones I needed.

Was playing a game as offlane weaver against trilane of AM, nyx and shadow demon. Nyx was being very aggressive so it was pretty tough for me to stay in xp range. they sentried the lane also. With impale/mana burn and a quick blink in from AM and SD out of my vision, they had a lot of killing potential. I was very scared of dying so I was playing very defensive and was a bit underleveled.

However, I still managed to feed three kills during the laning phase. All three of their heroes were about a level above me. (SD was stacking and pulling and it was hard for me to get within xp range. Even when the wave was near my tower, I was like, "sweet finally a few cs" but they had no fear at all walking underneath my tower and just dived me and impale/manaburn + the antimage who was going manaburn just blew me up. (this was b/w the T1 and T2. Also, they had invoker with sunstrike which was quite annoying.

Another death was when I tried to harass the pull with sakuchi but nyx managed to land a blind stun. Another was a vendetta kill. Once I got behind in levels, it was hard for me to even be near xp range.

And I was supposed to be the 2/3 player on the team. I had very little cs in the laning stage. I managed to get a couple of waves here and there during the game but it felt like I had very little impact due to kind of falling off early. There were no "big" items that I could really go for and went for midgame/utility items like RoA and drums. Basically, I just got carried by the other players on my team. When the game was over, naix on my team was like lvl 20 and I was like lvl 14. Had a couple of dumb deaths because I wasn't really playing smart when they had nyx and sunstrike.

But solo weaver against a trilane seems to be a pretty legit thing in competitive play. What I'm trying to figure out: how to get more of your offlane? And how to bounce back from so little farm?

match id:255072203 (was tl inhouse game with ppl who are stronger players than me)
would appreciate any tips at all. thx.
You mean I just write stuff here and other people can see it?

First of all, there is no hero that won't be suppressed by a properly executed trilane. So you should definitely not see yourself as the 2 if you're offlane.
I'm pretty sure that Weaver is seen as viable in 1v1 matchups or in an offensive trilane.
It's also not unusual to abandon the offlane if its impossible to stay on it.

I didn't watch the game, but in general you should look out for ways to get back in the game. Most of the time this means jungling or going to lanes that none of your teammates are currently in(if there are any).

The thing about Weaver off-lane is that so long as he sneaks in a few levels and doesn't die, his level 9/10 teamfighting ability with 4/4/1/1 and some basic fighting items like Urn, Aquila, Wand, and brown boots is still quite good, even if it's late.

So as long as you ensure you don't die and clean up those fights, you can snowball your way back into the game.

Are you sure that's the right id? Dota says "Access to Match ID 255072203 denied" when I try it.

Generally speaking, a sd trilane with an exort invoker is the 2nd most terrifying thing in the game for Weaver (bane gyro kotl being the most terrifying one). You should request some kind of ward to block the pull-camp with, and get there asap. If you can't either ward the camp or get a good ward in lane/jungle to watch the motion of the supports it's going to be almost impossible. Constantly click their heroes (all of them) to see if they're carrying sentries, and if yes, check constantly to see if they've placed one. If they deward your block they'll only have 1 to harass you with, so it's more manageable.

If they're pulling and you have no wards try to get xp with shukuchi. If they're camping you just outside the lane the carry can't possibly get to you in time (at least without losing a fair amount of cs and xp under the tower). If they're farming the pull you should be able to get SOME xp from it. Your ward placement should be as sneaky as possible, so the sentry they used to deward shouldn't be able to spot you from trying to get some xp. If they kill you with a 2nd sentry near the pull the lane should be safe. Buying another set of sentries delays their stick/boots/flying-courier, but you should watch for it dilligently.

If you literally cannot get a single xp from lane you can farm the easy camp-- killing it twice (with liberal use of shukuchi, because your armour is poor) will give you level 2. If your supports are roaming you can either try to gank with them, or stack/pull for your carry while the supports roam. Even if they aren't roaming, they can stack and farm the hard-camp while you stack and farm the pull-camp. If the enemy pushes, shukuchi or tp back to lane to get the xp. Those heroes can apply pressure under the tower, but if you haven't already fed by the time they push you should be able to survive. If you're pretty sure you can't, just tell your trilane to push and go with them, then rotate mid.

Weaver literally can be useful with just levels. If the lane is really rough for you just build tiny items-- wand, basilius, bracer, treads, aquila, etc. Make sure you don't waste extra levels in geminate though-- you need shukuchi maxed and swarm maxed second. Swarm is a big part of why you can be useful without farm. I'm not a big fan of finishing drum though. If it's that rough of a game you probably need bkb as your first big item. If you have bracer and robe, it's 800 to finish drum-- for 3 more str (which is the most useful aspect of the item for weaver). For 500 gold you have treads instead, for 8 more str. If you already have treads, it's 800 gold for 3 more str vs 1000 gold for 10 more str in an ogre club, which builds towards bkb.

I can't give more useful advice without being able to see the game ._>

One thing to note is that if you see them use a sentry, remember when it was placed so you know exactly when it runs out.

LD vs OD mid - who should win? I know OD reigns supreme in the 1vs1 department but LD doesn't rely on mana/int, plus he has a goddamn bear to help him

also what would you suggest as starting items for a laning LD? shield/regen/OoV/branches/etc

in general I don't know what item build to go on with LD. Phase boots for bear first? Headdress? Boots+Phase->Radiance? and at what part of the game is it no longer worth it to get a Radiance?

should I stay in bear form 100% once I hit level 6? forsaking range seems like a small price to pay in exchange for the huge amount of HP

Someone better than me can explain, but if I remember correctly, LD has an advantage as long as he has mana to resummon the Bear (4 branches)..but I don't think any of the matchups outright win.

there arent many heros who can go even with OD, and i dont think there is one who beats him.
LD is one of the few who are "better" against OD than others because of his bear.
still LD wont be able to roll over OD but he still has some advantages over other heros than normally would go mid.

theory-crafting:
you could try to outrange him with heros lke WR or Sniper. maybe when you have a chen or ench in your team they could use a creep to harrass him whenever he shows up (harpy-storm-thingy).

edit:
seems dota is messed up after the latest patch. any idea how to fix it?
because seems not all ppl are affected by this, since some freinds are online and i see Jeyo's stream too.
validating the dota-files didnt help here.
Ooooh, look at it go

On MM you can't hope for much and no theorycrafting will help you - either the guy has to be bad or you have to have a sidelane ganker slash competent supports. OD has to snowball in order to be effective (which he does if uninterrupted, because of his great stats and ability to dominate many matchups outright), but if you keep the pressure up, he'll struggle more than many other heroes in his situation.

Bit of discussion on OD's laning here.

LD seems to be one of the few heroes that actually wins the lane, for a given value of "win", anyway. It's still an OD; you're probably not going to push him out.

When I play AM and battlefury would come later than 20m, what are good alternatives? Assuming we are losing t3 towers and rax are in dange and enemy team is fat.

It gets awkward at that point because you were already building Bfury and probably already have a RoH and one of the swords or something... You better finish it than starting on a whole different item.
Or if you are really really desperate you can go straight for Manta, another alternative is make a Vanguard out of ur RoH and then get a Basher or something.

The decision to build something other than bfury should come way before you're already in danger of getting raxed. If you've already started bfury then your best bet is to just finish it asap. If you want to fight early on without farming bfury first, a PMS/treads/vlads build could work, straight into manta style.
