If we look at just results, where they're eclipsed by VG overall, Newbee in terms of when it matters, and only roughly equal to DK in terms of overall performance in tournaments. On impact on the overall meta EG also loses out to each of the three Chinese teams, which can be clearly seen in the way their playstyle took a sharp turn after TI4 to very closely resemble that of VG/Newbee's TI4 strategies. Even in terms of Drama/Storyline/Personality EG falls short - The rise and fall of DK was probably the story that dominated the first half year, and the second by the current VG. EG is without a doubt the best team in the west of 2014, but to say that they're the team of the year in Dota overall is absolutely ridiculous in anything besides the affection of western fans. Since the JD awards are obviously framed that way, there's nothing wrong with their placement of EG. How are they eclipsed by VG overall? VG didn't win a single tournament in 2014 before changing their roster and throughout the first half of the year could only sometimes compete with iG/DK/Nb and never when it mattered while getting eliminated by Alliance, Fnatic (twice) and EG when they had to face western teams. As for the storyline I think America finally having a top tier team with relatively unknown/rising star player is pretty good, not as good as DK but definitely better than Nb and VG. I don't think EG particularly deserves "team of the year" but they should at least be in the discussion. The interesting year is probably going to be 2015, with the East losing an entire tier 1 team worth of players and 2 of the shuffled teams (LGD/iG) looking kinda hit or miss, maybe the West can squeeze a surprise.

TI4 was their first major Grand Final in the year as well. That said, I'm still saying that VG was the better team this year. Just don't overstate how well they did.

EG won 2 big tournaments, one offline and one online. But the summit win was particularly impressive because the road was difficult. They even won team DK, arguably the strongest team in that season. They were the finalist in ESL Frankfurt which vici also competed but got eliminated in the first round. S I'd say eg was a better team overall in last season. Vici only stood out in ti4. As for east vs west, this season both sides are pretty meh. China has only Vici that is doing well. Newbee is hit or miss. As for west, only c9 secret and eg can be considered top teams. The rest of the teams are like 2 tiers below the top in terms of standards. Its like there's no tier 2 teams at all. There's no more fnatic or c9 2013/14 that can give top teams a hard time. [Edit] oh calendar year. How do you even compare new Vici + old Vici against eg. That's why the award is stupid.

Maybe their steam rolling is over, like all the other teams that were once almost unbeatable. Or maybe it's just that dota isn't very important to them right now, like arteezy said. New patch just came out yesterday, and they've always had problems in series that had server swapping. Not making excuses, but that was basically the ideal match to bet Rares on the underdog.

If the players split 2-3 ways I have no idea who I'm going to support, this roster was like my dream team. edit: literally the only thing I think would make the team better is EG.Aui_2000. It would make the team full NA, which means better practice times, and he has a similar style to Zai (while still being able to play the dirt cheap support position when the time comes). His hero pool is incredible, and he would bring some fresh ideas to the team. Losing Zai is huge, but I think it would be a net positive for the roster. Don't see Aui leaving EE though.

Maybe it will make more sense once things are announced, but it just feels like they can't improve a single position on their team by swapping someone out. I feel like they got discouraged by their play at a time when no one was really giving 100%, and it ended up driving a wedge between them. I think we have to assume that it is because of internal issues with the team. EE said in a recent interview that EG was a cancerous team and he was surprised they hadn't disbanded yet.

After they placed 2nd at the International, they have been the strongest team out of the west, along with Secret. They placed third... But your point still stands, I never really even considered EG breaking up so far. After The Summit it felt a bit strange wwith all that talk of never scrimming and being tired from all the tournaments but not at all like breaking up. They still are easily a good contender to win any tournament they enter.
