Good Job Valve. This wouldn't be happening if you just rejected this thing outright, rather than wait for a bunch of reporting and phone called from publishers to force you to reject it. But now you have gotten the attention of a national goverment who is specifically calling you out for letting this game exist on your service in any state. And now the whole industry has to deal with your bullshit because you can't moderate your store.

And one developer pointed out, Porn Hub has better content policies on sexual violence than Valve. They are clear rules that show they would not allow content like this trash game.

It had a steam page until steam removed it. And they only really removed it after a bunch of reporting told them the trash existed in the first place.

makes sense, I doubt they'd ever allow the game to actually go "live" in the store. That would be an abomination beyond words. I assume it just hadn't been picked up by whatever automated system Valve uses, or it had already been flagged but not dealt with yet.

That is sort of debatable. The game still got on the store and had page for a while. I don’t know how long, but it only got caught because it got enough attention to get some stories written about it. And from Valve’s statement, I think a publisher or two might have called Valve about it.

But for the game to be removed, it must first make enough noise for Valve to notice, which is sort of the opposite of moderation. That is catching the problem after the fact.

If there was a point where a valve employee looked at and approved a game called "rape day" then i think your right and they should change their policy for approving games. But if it was just an automated approval
process and they fixed it when it came to their attention, then I find it harder to be mad at them

It's not really "after the fact" if the game was never actually published imo...

The system works as intended. You are not going to get a system where every single item will be manually approved, unless you basically give up on the current idea of the Steam store. Which I know is what you want, but you can't act as if it was a screw up. Or say misleading stuff like that Valve let the game exist in their store.

I guarantee you there are plenty of innapropriate content that appears on PornHub and gets removed, but it doesn't get get media attention. The whole YouTube drama was far more serious than this.

Amanda Palmer's new album is really good, even if it does feel like she's leaning into the npr crowd so hard she should have changed her name to Kate McKinnon. She's also the exact type of artist to put a naked picture of herself as her album cover... though I'm only about 75% sure it's actually her lol.

I can totally say Valve let this happen. Their entire system was created by humans at Valve who have totally control of how its works. They are not even at the whim of stock holders like some companies. Anything that happens on their system is because they allow it to happen. If they choose not to moderate or approve games from unknown publishers, they allow it to get a store have a store page. Steam isn't a force of nature Valve can't control, its software. I can totally act like this is a fuck up because they have a member of the UK parliament calling for hearings about their company.

The issue is that human moderation is expensive, to the point that requiring it on every title might totally kill off most indie games on the platform.
